60 Minutes story facing defamation action

Cosmetic surgeon claims his character was “gravely injured” by Nine story and is demanding its removal.

A 60 Minutes story, most recently the subject of legal action to prevent it going to air, is now facing a defamation lawsuit.

The Australian reports Sydney doctor Joseph Ajaka has issued a legal concerns notice to Nine, claiming his character was “gravely injured” by a cosmetic surgery industry story last week.

Adele Ferguson’s investigation ran promos teasing “horrific evidence about an industry that’s becoming more toxic by the day. What she reveals will not only stun Australia but will surely lead to demands for inquiries and much greater oversight and regulation of the industry in question.”

The story was rushed to air by Nine following a round of hearings trying to compel the network to hand over copies before broadcast.

Unless all of the articles and online broadcast are removed by Nine, Dr. Ajaka plans to launch defamation against Nine and its journalists.

He is also seeking an apology from Nine Entertainment, but not damages.

A spokesperson for Nine said it stands by the story.
