Airdate: God’s Favorite Idiot

US comedy shot in Australia with Melissa McCarthy & Kevin Dunn drops on Netflix.

Melissa McCarthy comedy series God’s Favorite Idiot, which was shot in Australia during the pandemic, launched without fanfare on Netflix this week.

The series also stars Kevin Dunn as mid level Tech support employee Clark Thompson who finds love with co-worker Amily Luck (McCarthy) at exactly the same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God.

Aussies to feature include Magda Szubanski, Leon Ford, Sofie Formica and Georgie Bolton.

The series was originally due to shoot 16 episodes with some $10m of govt incentive but it was abruptly cut short, with Netflix confirming it would split the series into 2×8 episodes.

First reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are very mixed, currently with a 40% fresh rating.

It’s now screening on Netflix.

  1. I watched the first episode and it is honestly dead on arrival. An awfully unfunny um… workplace comedy? Nowhere near as witty or clever as it thinks it is to pass as a comedy… I mean how many times are we going to see McCarthy play a loud and obnoxious character with very little redeeming qualities? And there’s nowhere near enough of any sort of worthy story for it to even consider itself a dramedy… the side characters are atrociously one dimensional… a boss who isn’t respected and acts like a buffoon when he tries to be respected? So original and hilarious… it’s a stinker.
I honestly didn’t even raise any sort of smirk at anything that was going on at any point. A dumb, unoriginal mess of a show that I can’t believe was commissioned. No wonder Netflix haven’t given any word on shooting the remaining S1 episodes after they had to stop early during the pandemic. Wow.
