Ryan Moloney: “That’s not how you treat people.”

Neighbours star speaks out over the minimal attention given to the soap at Sunday's Logies.

Neighbours star Ryan Moloney has weighed into the minimal attention given to the cast at the Logie Awards after their 37 years of production.

On Sunday actors Daniel MacPherson and Natalie Bassingthwaighte presented the Most Popular New Talent award and acknowledged the show’s legacy of discovering stars, with a montage of soapie scenes.

But the room was denied a chance to give the cast a standing ovation, by not bringing them out on stage.

Speaking to 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed and Erin, Moloney said, “We turned up there, and we did our mandatory three hour talking to people on the red carpet. When we got in the room we ended up being split up and stuck on two different tables, it was horrible!

“Our table was actually even stuck behind the cameras, we couldn’t even see the stage… So we figured we weren’t going to get a gig then.”

Asked if he felt let down he replied, “In all honesty is that incredibly disappointing the package that they put together,” Moloney said.

Elsewhere he continued: “Daniel (MacPherson) and Nat (Bassingthwaighte) are just absolutely gorgeous people and absolutely nothing against them, but we‘ve got people who have been on TV for nearly 30 years each, and I think probably the least they could do is get us to say something … I mean we’re in the bloody Hall of Fame, that’s not how you treat a show that’s in the Hall of Fame. I mean good luck to the Logies really,” he said.

  1. After seeing photos of the award red carpet arrivals, it appears most of the cast made the trip up there, so the production company should have invited them to go up on stage for their last bow, or at the very least – seat them at a table which could see the clip montage (I wouldn’t have counted on Ten pushing for anything much given they axed the show). Very poor form and another reason why audiences have steadily turned off over the years. The Logies no longer hold the level of affinity back in the golden days of free to air tv, when pay tv was in early infancy and streaming services in the very distance future or dreamland.

      1. Thanks for clarifying David. While it is a challenge fitting everything into the long telecast and allocating sufficient time to eg Hall of Fame, InMemoriam etc, Nine should have done the right thing and given Neighbours a better send off than what it did. Imagine if Water Rats or McLeod’s Daughters had gone on for 30+ years and it had been given that kind of wrap on Channel Seven or Ten, how would Nine feel?

  2. This was particularly disrespectful to the cast of Neighbours, given how long TV Week cashed in on their success. The cast were even made to arrive first on the red carpet, which they did, only to then stand around for two hours waiting to be sat at the worst table in the room. What a way to treat the longest running drama in the history of Australian TV.

  3. On what was a very dull show with so many winners not turning up, a proper tribute to Neighbours with some legacy characters could have really been a high point.
It was clear they didn’t give a ****.

  4. The thing is, it’s not just disappointing and a slap in the face to the cast and crew of Neighbours, it is to the show’s fans as well. We want to see the cast and crew get the acknowledgement and recognition they deserve and the Logies, for better or worse, was the platform for this to happen.

I don’t know the motives behind the lacklustre arrangement on Sunday – network rivalry or sheer incompetence – but the fans were robbed of seeing the show, and all involved, get their moment in the spotlight, which was sorely needed especially given how the Logies have forgotten Neighbours over the last decade.

  5. The lack of recognition for Neighbours had Channel 9’s fingerprints all over it. If Neighbours was on 9 and not 10, the entire Logies would have been devoted to Neighbours.

  6. Nooooo, Neighbours already had their big moment when they were inducted in to the Logie Hall of Fame (where ever that is) in 2005… Sadly some things just come to an end…
And the show needs to be sped up, there were too many segments that dragged on for 5 or more minutes, the Lady JMo’s intro, the Hamish and Andy bit, the Hall of fame bit and yep even Patty’s tribute to dear Bert dragged on and I’d put money on Bert being the Hall of Famer for next year !! …

  7. It was an absolute disgrace and what they did was abysmal. I’m sure Channel 9 is part to blame too since they were the broadcaster afterall. It’s such a real real shame. Technically they can be nominated again next year too so maybe they can correct their wrongs but Neighbours deserved better.

  8. Agree wholeheartedly, Ryan. Neighbours was treated appallingly at the Logies. You all deserved much better. Just know that the fans are out there greatly appreciate and recognise the efforts put in to making the show, week after week, for 37 years. It’s a shame their own industry couldn’t do it.

  9. So true you’d think after 37 years you could get 10 minutes or so at least, here’s hoping next years Logies do them justice once the show has wrapped.
