Friday Flashback: Backchat

"I strongly object to hearing such language emanating from my beloved Channel 2."

Well before there was social media there was Backchat, Tim Bowden’s very own letter-reading show with bricks and bouquets for the ABC.

It ran twice a week from 1986 – 1995 as readers protested about programming, diction, bloopers, editorial -and even threw in praise too.

Only a small number of letters were chosen from the thousands the ABC would receive each year, although ABC policy was to reply to every letter sent.

Last night in ABC 90! Celebrate shows such as GP and The Big Gig were praised for their successes… not so much in this 1989 edition.

Happy 90th Aunty.

  1. I used to enjoy watching Backchat, I forgot how the opening titles were like those you’d see on a childrens how. I guess you could almost see this show as the original Gogglebox!

  2. “Dear My ABC. Why oh why isn’t Backchat on any more? I like writing letters complaining about TV shows because I have nothing better to do with my life”
