Justin Langer joins Seven Cricket

Former batsman to join Seven commentary team for the 2022-23 cricket season.

Justin Langer has joined Seven’s commentary team for the 2022-23 cricket season.

The former Test cricket opening batsman and Australian cricket coach will play a key on-air role, joining the commentary team led by Ricky Ponting.

Langer represented Australia in 105 Tests, with Matthew Hayden chalking up 5,655 runs over 113 innings, the second most successful partnership in Test cricket worldwide.

He also coached Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in Australian domestic cricket, was appointed Head Coach of the Australian cricket team in 2018-2022 and is also a best-selling author.

Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “We are honoured that Justin has agreed to be part of our commentary team for the 2022-23 summer. He is a true legend of the sport, both as a player and a coach, and an inspiration to many Australians.

“The addition of Justin to our on-air team is a clear demonstration of our ongoing commitment to deliver world-class coverage of the summer of cricket, live and free, to all Australians.”

Langer said: “Test Cricket has been a part of my life since I was a little kid. Having been fortunate to have played and coached in the Test arena, I am now delighted to be given the opportunity to commentate on the game I love, with a great company and team at Seven. The BBL was also a pivotal part of my life, so I am excited to be involved again this summer.”

Langer will also write a regular column for The West Australian.

Seven’s 2022-23 full cricket commentary team will be revealed later this year.

  1. I wonder if this was a case of signing him so he didn’t go elsewhere (cough cough Fox Sports). Seems a bit odd Seven would be paying $$ for more on-air talent, for a sport they’ve been fighting so hard to get out of broadcasting. They’re right he’s a legend of the sport… just seems a bit of a waste for his talents 🙁

    1. Aaron, this was my initial thought also but seven have to assume they will be broadcasting the cricket this Summer (perhaps not 2023/4 though) and have to still try and milk everything they can. The test cricket rated ok for seven last Summer (yes it was Ashes) and with a Adelaide night test and a Perth test both in prime time for Eastern states, they can’t afford to sulk. They can and should leverage while they have it. Also, with the sad demise of Shane Warne, one would assume Fox will be looking to add some heft. Pointing and Langer in commentary is well worth listening to in my book.
