Tennis fans unhappy over Nine switching from Alex De Minaur match

A tennis overlap left Nine with the brutal call to switch from a match with Alex De Minaur to Nick Kyrgios before it had concluded.

Angry Wimbledon viewers took to social media last to vent at Nine for switching from a match with Alex De Minaur to Nick Kyrgios before it had concluded.

As the Daily Telegraph reported, Nine warned viewers deep in the third set that they would leave the de Minaur match at the end of the set.

Nine at least waited until the end of the set, host broadcasters in the UK the BBC immediately cut away to the Kyrgios match prompting immediate complaints from fans who were engaged in the match at a crucial point in time deep in the third set.

But Nine didn’t give viewers the chance to switch to one of their other free to air channels to watch the other match live, instead opting for Law & Order on 9GEM and movie The Jackal on 9GO!

The match continued on Stan Sport, behind a paywall.

  1. The decision was really disappointing given the De Minaur match was great viewing, but typical of Nine’s tennis coverage. So I took it as my cue to go to bed

  2. Their main problem is that Nine makes silly decisions.
    1. Last Daturday, Perth viewers didn’t see a channel warning telling viewers to switch game from Go to Gem. Instead Perth viewers having umpteenth repeat of movies on primary channel. Channel 9 Perth shouldn’t have movies then, they should have tennis as priority over movies. Who cares about movies on Saturdays?
    2. We want to watch the de minaur match but they cut off to Kyrgios match (where I can’t stand him). De minaur is a high quality bloke than Kyrgios due to his attitude.

  3. Yep, we are De Minaur fans in our house and you should have heard the abuse being hurled at Channel 9 from here last night. They couldn’t even switch it to a multichannel?! We hope heads are rolling at channel 9 today. They massively cocked it up.

  4. As a tennis fan I’d have rather watched the first match on Centre Court, the most important one between Sinner and Alcaraz but I don’t have Stan. Nine has bought the entire tournament for Stan, ad free (though the ads in Tennis aren’t really a problem as there are frequent breaks where the plays are just sitting down and eating and drinking anyway). They have only bought the rights to one channel for FTA. The rights to world class sport are getting very expensive and FTA revenues won’t fund more than that. The Kyrigos match attracted more people, and would keep them longer, and as it turns out was the more interesting and important match anyway.

  5. I for one was hoping De Minaur would wrap in up in straight sets then wouldn’t have to worry. But soon as they went to Kyrgios i switched the Tv off i can’t stand watching Kyrgios.I never waste my time watching him play.If Foxtel was involved you could watch want you wanted from all sorts of courts. When you don’t have that available to you it’s always a let down.Be the same with the upcoming Commonwealth Games there will be stuff at times you won’t want to view anyway that’s the way it is

    1. I much prefer Stan Sport. With Foxtel they only showed two courts for the French Open and about six for Wimbledon and then in the second week they usually dropped the number of courts. With Stan you get to see all 18 courts whether its singles or doubles. Makes a massive difference for the tennis tragics.

  6. It wasn’t that long ago when there was only one channel per network and live events would be shown when they saw fit. In summer, those of us not living in the daylight saving states had their “live” sport delayed by an hour or more. What happened with the clash of the two matches could have been avoided but generally sport coverage is so much better than it used to be.

  7. Is this a new tactic by Nine? Tease with the first half of something on FTA then ‘if you want to see the rest sign up to Stan. We accept Visa and Mastercard’. Meanwhile two of their FTA channels play old, often repeated, 90’s content. Cynical me says “yes, afraid so”.

  8. Someone should tell channel 9 that Alex is actually our highest ranked player and deserves a bit of respect. They would have been so disappointed that Kyrgios didn’t play up and cause any controversies. They seem to love that stuff.

  9. Well I was annoyed for a completely different reason. The tennis wasn’t even supposed to be on it was supposed to be the final episode of Million dollar murders which they had been showing promos for all week.

    1. Same! I had million dollar murder in the guide and turned over to watch only for Wimbledon to come on which already screening on 9 Go. Very frustrating.

  10. The Aussies getting just as annoyed by switching matches as we do. Here it was the early BBC2 game but abandoned it as the pivotal moment in tje third set to switch to the opening games on Centre (before that switched to BBC2), with BBC2 then going to Court 1 rather than returning to it, although it was picked up again in the 5th set.
