Canberra truth stranger than House of the Dragon fiction

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young shares her thoughts on small screen politics, Kids TV -and her teen crush on Callan Mulvey.

Even politicians couldn’t wait to see the House of the Dragon premiere last night in Sydney.

Sarah Hanson-Young told TV Tonight there were often similarities in the politics of Westeros and that of the halls of Canberra.

“We’ve had the former prime minister, all the secrecy and intrigue, appointing himself to one throne after the other and killing everybody else off. I think sometimes reality is weirder than fiction,” she said.

Onto more series topics I asked the Greens senator for her thoughts on last week’s ACMA compliance report which shows children’s television has sunk on commercial broadcasters since quotas were removed?

“We really need to see more commitment to Australian content across the board, but more commitment to Australian kids television. Absolutely. It is important for our kids to hear their own voices on screen, their own stories on screen. It’s an important part of creating and celebrating the broad Australian culture,” she said.

Growing up Hanson-Young’s favourite teen show was the original Heartbreak High.

“I had a massive crush on Drazic (Callan Mulvey) at the time.”

The Greens are also in favour of local content quotas applied soon to Streaming platforms.

“It’s really important that we put local content regulations around the streaming services. It is coming. The debate’s going to be how much? I want as much as possible.”
