The Block launches huge in new reality battle

It was war in the reality shows on Sunday, but Nine's Block has launched bigger than it did in 2021.

The Block appears to have tapped into the dreams of city viewers who have endured two years of rolling lockdowns.

A Tree Change season, the first ever rural reno for the Nine series, launched to a huge 867,000 metro viewers, despite heated competition. That’s up 16% on 2021’s 747,000 premiere and in effect positions Nine well for a stong second half of the year.

It was easily ahead of The Masked Singer‘s 522,000 (rising to 598,000 for the reveal of Ryan Moloney), the return of MKR (503,000) and Spicks & Specks (449,000).

Later 60 Minutes was 445,000 then Mystery Road: Origin (263,000).

Commonwealth Games was still big, at  724,000 / 396,000 / 331,000 with 7mate topping multichannels with a huge 396,000.

Seven network won Sunday with 38.6% then Nine 27.2%, 10 15.0%, ABC 12.9% and SBS 6.3%.

Seven News was #1 at 982,000 viewers.

Nine News drew 807,000 with a late edition at 223,000.

The Sunday Project drew 314,000 / 248,000 for 10. 10 News First was 253,000 / 188,000. NCIS: Hawaii was 169,000 then FBI (93,000).

ABC News was 572,000 for ABC. Compass (164,000) and movie: Suffragette followed.

On SBS it was SBS World News (141,000 / 121,000), Mysteries From The Grave: Titanic (110,000) and Hindenburg: The New Evidence (75,000).

In Total TV numbers last Sunday were:

Hunted: 982,000
Beauty & the Geek: 707,000
Mystery Road: Origin: 569,000
NCIS: Hawaii: 355,000

OzTAM Overnights: Sunday 7 August 2022

  1. I didn’t watch any of the long overdrawn reality instead sticking with Spicks and Specks and I’m glad I did. The secret question was very well done. Was a hoot. Always an uplifting hour of television.

  2. Watched The Block Live, watched other 2 on Catch-Up.
Liked The cast on The Block, but I think the reason it did so well is it’s a seachange in the country, with large block. Like we have here in Semi-Rural, Rural NSW. Not just the House, but the land & the landscape around it.
Yes MKR got away from all the bickering of last couple of seasons, but as said above seemed to long.
The Masked Singer is what it is, just strange & Compelling..
Will watch Masked Singer live tonight, since HYBPA is on after…

  3. Enjoyed The Block. Disappointing to see Scotty has already renovated his home! Wanted to see him renovate simultaneously to the five couples.
Interesting the couple that are leaving had nothing on their social pages last night! It’s like they didn’t want to even acknowledge they were on the show.

  4. I don’t think it has anything to do with tree changes or the pandemic. It has everything to do with the way the Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun acted as Channel 9 shills, relentlessly promoting The Block and the walkout. I thought it was shameful

    1. I’m a bit confused too….on News.com (same owners as Daily Telegraph) they had a few articles saying how amazing Nigella was and how everyone was embracing the change and the new look…barely mentioned they were flogged by the Block!
Think people are liking the location change

      1. Unreal! I liked her on Neighbours, seemed very down to earth and family oriented (good casting and acting then), however in real life sadly looks like the total opposite, hope I’m wrong. Also wasn’t aware she’s from Adelaide, seems like someone who’d be well suited to Point Piper or something. Also, her age seems officially unknown, but some websites say “1988” which would make her impossibly young to have had mid-high teenage children in the show from some 5 years back.

  5. Time for yet another round of:
“I predict MKR will be a ratings disaster”

And in a few weeks time:
“Who would have thought that MKR would be so successful in the ratings?”

    (sigh)

  6. I haven’t watched The Masked Singer since Season 1 but thought I’d give the new panel a go and loved the fresh look and feel of the presenters. Also felt it time to reward Ten for trying something different instead of the same old reheated and spiced reality concepts. Last nights decision was in recognition for giving Hunted a go. I think I’ll be staying with The Mask Singer for this quarter.

    1. I wanted to love the Masked Singer, however it’s hard for me to be shouted at from Osher for an hour. Between him and Chrissie Swan…I had to switch over to Nine.

      1. Watched most of Masked Singer whilst flicking between channels – very padded out and slowly paced, annoyingly so.

With the very loud Osher and the very annoying David Hughes it also felt more like punishment than programming.

It would also be nice if they got some celebrities this year in the costumes.

  7. MKR was okay but was drawn out way way too long they could have easily done it in an hour will probably keep watching just hope that episodes from now on are shorter

    1. Well tonight’s episode is 105 minutes then Tues 100 and Wednesday 90 minutes so far ,I guess they add a few more on for good measure ,I have no desire to watch either this or the other 2 for the season ,I’ll drop in and out of The Block but that’s it.

  8. MKR needed more of a ‘rest’. That is very soft launch given all the promotion and all the eyeballs that have been on Seven over the last few weeks for the Comm games.

    1. To be fair, a lot of Seven’s audience who may potentially have wanted to watch it were still watching the Commonwealth Games. We’re not stupid Seven, the games aren’t finished yet and they shouldn’t have been so impatient. Good thing they got what they deserved for this terrible move. As I said before, they needed to wait until at least Tuesday night to start anything new and return shows

      1. I attempted to watch the Mens Road Race, the only event I wanted to watch, but they only showed snippets of it. I attempt to record the ending after I went to bed, but they moved it to 7+. They never showed the finish so I can assume it wasn’t part of Australia’s Sunday of Gold, and thus wasn’t important.
