Better Homes & Gardens: Sept 23

Johanna Griggs visits Government House in Melbourne, and Adam Doville gets into a coffee table project.

This week on Better Homes & Gardens, Johanna Griggs visits Government House in Melbourne, and Adam Doville gets into a coffee table project.

Johanna – The Welcoming Kitchen Garden
At Government House in Melbourne, Johanna learns about the Peace and Prosperity Kitchen Garden Program, originated by the current Governor, Linda Dessau. As the first female governor, she was keen to champion a cause that encouraged connections within the female migrant community of Melbourne. After the meeting these new Australians in the kitchen garden, Joh drops in on a propagation lesson before eating a home-cooked lunch inside government house featuring freshly picked veggies. These women aren’t just helping to grow veggies, they’re growing a sense of community.

Adam – Four Crates A Coffee Table Makes
If you can screw two pieces of timber together, then you can build Adam’s latest coffee table project. Turning four timber crates on their sides and gluing and screwing them together is as easy as it gets. Add some castors to the bottom and you have a coffee table that you can move around the house. Give it a go this weekend and impress your friends and family over the next cup of tea.

Karen – Baked Ravioli With Primavera Sauce
Pasta bakes might be synonymous with winter, but with spring upon us, how do you give it a little seasonal twist? Well, Karen will show you a simple recipe featuring ravioli, cheese, homemade primavera sauce and spring vegetables. This rich and gooey dish will be the best pasta bake you’ve ever eaten.

Fast Ed – Organic Mocha-Almond Pudding With Mango-Raspberry Sauce
Eating organic food isn’t just good for you, it’s better for the environment too. In the McLaren Vale near Adelaide, Ed’s found a vineyard that’s gone organic and produces the most delicious wines. But while here, Ed’s inspired to make a deliciously rich and delicate mocha pudding topped with organic fruit sauce. If you’re think about going organic, this might be the dish to start with.

Fast Ed – Organic Butter-Glazed Rotisserie Chicken With Cheesy Polenta
Using organic produce is easier than you think and the benefits are many. To get into the organic vibe, Ed’s come to an organic vineyard in McLaren Vale, South Australia to cook a family roast using only the freshest of ingredients. He’s taking the family fave roast chicken and giving it a stuffing that will really enhance its flavour. Cooked on a rotisserie with organic beetroot, or your favourite root veggie, all you need to do it sit back and enjoy this organic feast.

Graham – Toowoomba Carnival Of Flowers
Melbourne and Canberra aren’t the only major flower shows in Australia, Toowoomba also has a carnival of flowers of its own. The carnival not only features many gardens worth of flowers, but food and wine, music, arts and crafts and many more events. Graham will be there to soak in all the sights, sounds and of course, fragrances, for this iconic Queensland event that began in 1949.

Graham – Spring Native Winners
Yellow is the colour of Spring in Australia as our iconic Wattles dazzle with their amazing display. At the Australian Botanic Garden in Mount Annan there are 166 species of Wattle each with their own personality. But yellow is not the only floral colour at this time of year as Graham discovers a tapestry of colours carpeting the landscape with the largest Paper Daisy display in Eastern Australia. And if they’ve got you inspired, Graham will show you how to grow all these beautiful flowers at home. There’s so much to love about our Aussie natives!

Charlie – Planting An Edible Garden
Most of us plant fruit and veg gardens out the back, but what if the front garden is the best place for it? Tonight, Charlie transforms a disused front garden into a productive and beautiful entry that will put a smile on the face of the owners every time they venture out. With a mix of low-growing fruit and veg and a vertical grow screen, this garden becomes incredibly versatile. And by adding some beautiful ornamental flowers to the space will not only give it a pop of colour but attract bees and pollinating insects to power this garden for years to come.

Juliet – Style & Shape Your Space With Colour
First impressions count and an entry sets the tone to your home, welcoming you and your visitors. Juliet’s found a home featuring a mid-century modern style that just requires a few features to really make it an inviting and functional space. By building a very easy desk and painting the walls with a couple of on-trend colours, this under stairs and entrance area is now cool, but warm and welcoming.

Dr Harry – Stair Fear Dalmatian
There’s a troubled dog in Brisbane whose owners have called upon Dr Harry for help. You see, Harvey the dalmatian, has a fear of going down stairs, which is a bit of a dilemma when you live in a beautiful old Queenslander home. Harvey is distressed, his owners are upset, and the problem is far more than superficial. What goes up must come down, especially if it’s Harvey the dalmatian. Will Dr Harry be able to find the solutions to this pooch’s predicament?
