SBS on Demand outranks streaming giants

SBS app is more popular with Apple users than any other streaming platform in Australia.

SBS managing director James Taylor has hailed SBS on Demand as the top ranking streaming app in Apple -outclassing big hitters such as Netflix, Disney+ and iview.

“I am really pleased to say that SBS On Demand has world-class user experience,” he told a Senate Estimates hearing this week.

“If you look at your Apple device to see the highest rated streaming platform in the country, you will be delighted, I hope, to see that SBS On Demand, a public entity, is the highest rated streaming platform in the Apple app store.

“It is higher than any of the global behemoths that we compete with.

“It is higher than any of the commercial free-to-air operators. It is not because of the vast wealth that we have at SBS but because of the will and talent of the SBS teams, who really care deeply about audience experience.”

Ratings and user reviews into consideration when ranking your app.

Apple rating and number of user ratings:

  1. SBS On Demand 4.8 (74,000)

  3. Prime Video 4.7 (96,000)
  4. Apple TV+ 4.7 (31,000)
  5. 9Now 4.6 (68,000) / Disney+ 4.6 (68,000)

  19. Acorn TV 2.4 (111)

Taylor also claimed SBS On Demand as first to market as a streaming product in Australia.

“It continues to go from strength to strength. Over 15,000 hours of premium and differentiated content are on the platform. The opportunity to create news items in one of six languages is a first for the country. It also carries vastly less advertising than other comparable platforms offered by commercial free-to-air networks. We limit ourselves to five minutes of advertising per minute in SBS On Demand, which replicates our legislative commitments that apply to us on our media services,” he said.

“We choose to replicate that on SBS On Demand to provide value to consumers and, indeed, to advertisers.”

  1. Unfortunately this is not true for Apple TV devices, where I would think many more people view TV content. There the Disney+ app has a much higher rating than SBS.

  2. I’m also a big fan of SBS on demand. It has some different shows to what you see on the main channels, there plenty of movies to choose from, old and new, plus of course all the documentaries. That reminds me, I still need to watch the second part of Kisstory… i’ll do that this weekend. Keep up the good work SBS!

  3. SBS has a large amount of subtitled foreign content, plus niche content that others don’t want. But it is a niche market with only 74,00 votes, a small but happy audience, that also likes Apple. 7Plus has got a large number of US shows, most of which never got aired on FTA, or where aired only late at night, plus some ITV content that isn’t exclusive to Britbox. They have nearly half a million positive reviews. Interesting the other popular service is Shudder, a lot of Horror lovers with Apple devices who aren’t being served by anyone else. Tenplay has a little content because they are moving most CBS content to Paramount+. NineNow has large amount of advertising with high repetition of the same promos.

  4. Same here .SBS have the best catch up service . ABC is very light on with programs to suit me . BBC IPlayer is now doing 4K of some programs . Nice to see the difference between our ABC & BBC picture quality .We miss out on 1080p 50fps & now 4k .

  5. I would really love it if SBS would offer a paid alternative with no ads. The ads really mess up the shows and are placed really badly. Happy to pay as long as it’s an alternative for those who can’t afford it.
    Is that possible?
