SBS launches Alone Australia

A little bit of Tasmanian wilderness came to Sydney last night ahead of a new survival contest coming to SBS.

A little bit of Tasmanian wilderness came to Sydney last night when SBS launched Alone Australia at a screening at Hoyts Broadway.

Five cast members were in attendance, Duane, Mike, Kate, Gina and Peter.

They were joined by SBS execs including Joseph Maxwell, John Godfrey, Peter Andrews, Jo’an Papadopoulos, Sarah Vahtola and from ITV Studios Australia David Mott, Beth Hart, Ben Ulm and Riima Daher.

Rewilding Facilitator, Gina, 52, said, “About a month before it came to Australia I finally buckled and watched my first episode of Alone -ready to hate it- but I thought ‘This is actaully great!’ Next thing I was on a bingeing marathon, thinking ‘I wonder what I would do… but it’s North America so I can’t do it.’ Literally two weeks later ther was an email in my inbox with people saying Alone is coming to Australia.

“It’s the most exciting thing I can imagine doing and I feel like I’ve been training for it my whole life.”

Contestants are allowed to take 10 items with them, but choosing what to take is practically a challenge in itself.

Wildlife Biologist, Kate, 41, said. “It’s almost scientific. I had to go through every single element of the game. For all of us because it’s the first season it’s particularly exciting because we don’t know the rules of the game, and that’s the thing. Broad research has to happen because (there are things you can and can’t do).”

Last night 4 of the 5 contestants indicated they would sign up for the show again if the opportunity arose.

“You can’t spend a day in the wilderness without learning something about yourself,” said Gina.

Alone Australia launches with two episodes 7:30pm Wednesday March 29 on SBS.
