Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh will star in Star Trek: Section 31 for Paramount+, the latest addition to the Star Trek universe.
She will reprise her role as Emperor Phillipa Georgiou, first seen in Star Trek: Discovery’s debut season.
In Star Trek: Section 31, Emperor Phillipa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.
“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said, Michelle Yeoh. “Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Phillipa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched, and to see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible the power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: Live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”
“All the way back in 2017, before the first season of Star Trek: Discovery had even aired, Michelle had the idea to do a spin-off of her character, Phillipa Georgiou,” said, Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman. “She broke new ground as one of the first two women on screen in the pilot to usher in a new age of Trek, and now, six years later, Star Trek: Section 31 finally arrives on the heels of her latest groundbreaking win. Everyone on Team Trek couldn’t be more thrilled to have our legendary friend return home to us as we expand our storytelling into new and uncharted corners of the Trekverse. Long Live Emperor Georgiou, Long Live Michelle Yeoh!”
“We’re thrilled that Star Trek: Section 31 will be the next title in our Star Trek universe,” said, Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data at Paramount Streaming. “Michelle Yeoh is an incomparable talent – she brought Emperor Georgiou to life in such an incredibly fun and nuanced way that the character immediately became a fan favorite. We’re so thrilled to welcome Michelle back to the Star Trek and Paramount+ family and can’t wait for fans to see what this special movie event has in store.”
“For years, we’ve been looking forward to Michelle Yeoh one day returning to Star Trek,” said, David Stapf, President of CBS Studios. “Her powerful performance as Captain and Emperor Georgiou was not only a pivotal moment for the return of the franchise, but her portrayal resonated with fans around the world in a multitude of ways. We couldn’t be prouder to join forces with Michelle once again as we continue to explore the Star Trek universe, celebrate its legacy, and chart a course for the future of the franchise.”
Production by CBS Studios, will begin later this year.

This spin-off is part of phase 2 of Alex Kurtzman’s ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ universe and it will be a movie (reports Variety: 18th April). According to some industry sources the reason for Star Trek: Section 31 being a movie is because Kurtzman has had the Section 31 title as one of his long time pet projects and wanted to star and maybe direct Michelle Yeoh after her Oscar win, Kurtzman believes a movie featuring Yeoh will make more money. The film production will have a budget of $80 million. Another point of interest is that according to industry insiders Kurtzman has allegedly recently resigned with Paramount to keep control of his Star Trek franchise until 2030. On a more positive note SE02 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is said to have completed production, so it should be the next Paramount Star Trek series to be released.
I’ve been a Trekkie since 1970 or so but have entirely gone off it now in it’s inability to move forward-everything since ST Enterprise has been set ‘in the past’ with copious rewriting of the canon.
Yes, Chuck128, many ex Star Trek fans will probably agree with you, but as far as producers like Alex Kurtzman and his Secret Hideout company is concerned it’s all about making him money.
I liked Strange New Worlds at least.
Then Star Trek Picard season 3 was good. After the first two seasons which were garbage. It really shows how mismanaged the season one. Many franchises, like Star Trek should look to Picard s3 about how to address legacy IPs.
