Airdate: 2023 Tony Awards

Ariana DeBose to host Broadway's big night, proceeding despite the writers' strike.

Paramount+ is set to screen the 76th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by Ariana DeBose.

Held at the United Palace in New York City, this will be available on demand on Paramount+.

Due to the writers’ strike, the ceremony is currently expected to be unscripted; Lin-Manuel Miranda initially wrote an opening number for the awards, but it’s currently unknown if it will be performed.

For the first time, the Tony Awards will be presented at the historic United Palace. The history of the United Palace begins in 1930 when it opened as one of five Loew’s “Wonder Theatres,” premiere vaudeville and movie houses located in four boroughs and New Jersey. With nearly 3,400 seats the United Palace is Manhattan’s fourth largest theatre, and hosts concerts, movie premieres, film shoots, and other events.

The United Palace serves the Washington Heights community by showcasing the performing and visual art of local artists, many of them school children, and housing the non-profit Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance.

  1. Super confused here, too. Can’t find it on demand either on Paramount + or on 10play. Any light you can shed on this would be welcome, David! Thanks!

  2. Are you sure this is correct David? Every indication seems to be that it will only be viewable live on Paramount+ through “your local CBS affiliate”, which says to me that they’re really only referring to US subscribers.

Hopefully it will be available on demand following the event, although it was supposed to be last year to and it never appeared…

While I respect the decision of a network/streaming service to manage their programming, it’s disappointing when the messaging is so unclear. Would be better if Paramount+ Australia just came out and gave a clear statement about the Tonys broadcast so we can either know it’s happening or be put out of our misery!

    1. Why on earth are you criticising P+ Australia for something which refers to P+ USA? They have been perfectly clear in June highlights which I have posted for AU readers. It will be available on demand, not live.

      1. I stand corrected regarding their statement on the “on-demand” element, but I don’t think it’s clear at all from Paramount+ Australia that it won’t be available live – especially when you’re talking about an event that, except for last year, has been broadcast live into Australia since the early 2000s. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be disappointed – but I take your point that the decision around the programming may be out of Paramount+ Australia’s hands.

        1. So, after all that, it’s live on 10Play (on the Ten Sport channel). Great news for theatre lovers, but it’s seems a little crazy that it wasn’t more widely advertised/communicated (unless I missed something!!! Anyway, a massive net positive.

  3. Whoo hoo!
Thanks for the update David. Someone at Paramount+ must have realised last year’s omission was an opportunity lost to add new subscribers.
