Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro: Aug 31

In Kiama, Julia walks 21.5km across headlands and over beaches and visits the biggest blowhole in the world.

This week on Great Australian Walks Julia Zemiro visits Kiama, south of Wollongong.

This stunningly visual episode, set around the quaint coastal town of Kiama, features epic landscape, volcanic rocks, rivers and lagoons. But it’s the stories buried in this rugged, jagged and breathtaking coastline – one of Australia’s holiday hotspots – that is the real hero.

Arriving by train from Sydney, Julia dons her cap and applies her sunscreen as she walks 21.5km across headlands and over beaches exploring how the traditional owners of the land have kept this place sacred for thousands of years; visits the biggest blowhole in the world and receives an idiot’s guide to volcanology; meets a couple who have chosen this walk as the stunning backdrop for their pre- wedding photos; and learns how a surfing mayor fought to protect a natural reserve.

7:30pm Thursday on SBS.
