ABC denies Tingle petition signature

"The name on the petition is given as 'OBE Laura Tingle ABC Australia,'" broadcaster says of fake news.

ABC has issued a statement denying that journalist and Board member Laura Tingle has signed a petition regarding student protests over the Israel-Gaza conflict, reportedly published in Overland magazine.

ABC said the reporting the mag, which describes as ‘Australia’s only radical literary magazine,’ was false.

“The name on the petition is given as ‘OBE Laura Tingle ABC Australia,'” the broadcaster said in a statement.

“The ABC has contacted Overland.

“The Australian Jewish Association, which claimed on Twitter / X that Tingle had signed the petition, has corrected its report.”

Overland was founded in 1954 and is published by a not-for-profit organisation and has previously published a joint statement from 11 Palestine student solidarity encampments across Australia.

Last night its website was offline, “undergoing scheduled maintenance.”
