A year on for Shirvo and Sunrise still shines

Sunrise and The Morning Show continue to give Seven dominance in morning television.

A year on from Matt Shirvington taking on the co-hosting role of Sunrise and it’s been good news for Seven.

Total TV audience averages so far this year for the two commercial breakfast shows (News Breakfast was not supplied) are:

For over two decades, Sunrise has remained #1 -although there was some contention in 2016 when Today claimed the year in metro numbers and Sunrise in national. Legal letters flew back and forth over the phrase “Australia’s Number 1.”

The Morning Show is also in its 17th year at #1, giving Seven dominance from 5.30am to 11.30am everyday -ABC’s Insiders is the only regular show to outrank Seven across the morning timeslot.

Even Nine’s push through the Olympics has not seen it take grab the crown, although there are cities that prefer Nine to Seven. But Regional viewing continues to give Seven a healthy lead, while its national BVOD audience has increased 46% so far this year.

The show also has a combined 3.1 million followers across socials with Facebook up 55% this year) and an average of 1.58 million YouTube plays a month so far this year.

Seven Network Director of Morning Television, Sarah Stinson, said: “Our commitment to delivering the very best in morning television has paid off.

SunriseThe Morning Show and Weekend Sunrise have won the ratings year again, proving Australian viewers continue to trust us to bring them compelling news, entertainment, sport and everything in between.

“It is a testament to the tireless work of our entire team both on and off air that we remain market leaders with content that continues to connect with audiences across the country,” she said.

“This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of you, our viewers; we do not take that for granted and will continue to evolve to ensure you get the standard of programming you deserve.”

Natalie Barr, said: “This means a lot. The first full year Shirvo’s been on the team, and what an amazingly talented hard-working team it is. You don’t see them on TV but when you watch our show, but they are the glue and the heart and soul of our Sunrise family. Very proud of everyone. Thanks for watching.”

Matt Shirvington, said: “Wow, what a year, what a ride and it’s not over yet! Thanks to everyone at home for tuning in. You laughed with us, you cried with us. It means so much that you choose to hang out with us every morning. I am so proud of Nat and the whole Sunrise family, who are the most passionate, professional and hardworking team on TV.”

  1. David can you tell me what does Sunrise have on the show that keeps beating The Today Show??
Because for me literally The Today Show is better, has more better content, more better News Sport Weather & Entertainment. Same can be said with Today Extra & Weekend Today!
Would love Everybody’s opinion on this..
    Cheers Many Thanks!

  2. I really like Shirvo, especially when he brings Murphy into the studio. He has that ‘Larry nice guy’ feel about him. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all, so I won’t comment on Nat, as much as it pains me!!

  3. This is a level of PR fluff. Yes there are cities that prefer Nine to Seven, it’s all the big ones. City by city numbers tell a very different story. No mention of Seven’s annus horribilis? And how the slogan of a sunrise family sits with seven’s internal culture?

    1. City averages were not provided and I don’t have access to those since OzTAM stopped sending. I’ve actually added into the story elements that were not in the Seven release, including 2016 conflict, Insiders…as well as skipping some elements around Reach etc, which is probably more than a number of other media. In regards to the current culture there are multiple stories on this, but it won’t be referenced every time there is a Seven story, especially given they were not specifically tied to these two shows. That said there’s no denying Seven dominance in morning TV.

    2. A little harsh. Although the averages show a 60k+ difference, it is often double that and that is impressive with a host change. Yes seven have had significant self wounds lately (as have nine, ten and ABC although none worse than seven) and historically (when the metro numbers were shared) Today has lead in Sydney and Brisbane but not by massive amounts (from memory). Nine would have realistically hoped for a post Olympics bounce and it didn’t happen (at least for Today) with the rusted on Sunrise numbers barely changing during Olympics.
