Fans of Hamish & Andy’s Gap Year may remember the Ultimate Wingman sketches, pranked around the world with the two hosts.
Tonight on ABC’s The Assembly, one young fan, Angus, asked guest Hamish Blake a question.
Angus: “One of my favourite running jokes was Andy being single and your Ultimate Wingman character. Was there a time that it worked surprisingly well?”
Hamish: “Yeah there was, because he’s really attractive. Must be very nice to have those cheekbones….I will just give a very fast refresher: I played this character, Ultimate Wingman, and I would put Andy in situation where I pretend to be a stranger, and he would like, help me in front of a young lady.
“And then I would go, I would say, ‘Wow, your wife is a lucky lady.’ And then he would go, ‘I actually don’t have a wife. I’m single.’ And then I would say, ‘Whaaaat?’ and then I would walk away, hoping that this would then leave a fertile ground to have a conversation where it’s already established he’s single.
“But afterwards we would have to tell people, ‘Hey, we were filming that’ and they’re disappointed. But then they’re like, ‘Oh, wait a sec, he’s making a TV show?’ So then they’re like, ‘What ARE you doing later?'”
Angus: “So all he had to do was tell them he was making a TV show?”
Hamish: “Exactly, who knew that if a handsome guy goes, ‘Hey, I’m on TV,’ it might work?”
Angus: “Do you reckon the Ultimate Wingman will be his best man then?”
Hamish: “Ultimate Best Man Wingman? Maybe whether he likes it or not, I make an appearance. Bring the Aviators out one more time, just shadowing shadowing him at the altar.”
The Assembly screens 8:30pm tonight on ABC.
