Olympic reign draws to a close for Nine

Australians' love of Sport and a strong team in Paris has proven a winner for Nine's Olympic broadcast.

Nine’s Olympic reign is all but over, with the Closing Ceremony screening early this morning, before a primetime repeat.

While there were issues surrounding a print journalism strike, and the usual barrage of social media criticism, Nine has stood on the Gold Medal dais as far as TV ratings are concerned.

Nine completely dominated all key demos and Total People on both broadcast TV and BVOD.

Sunday night competition drew the biggest audience at 1.98m viewers in National TV Audience, followed by Monday, Tuesday then Wednesday crowds.

Of course buying rights to Olympics isn’t only about two weeks of advertising sales but in promotion of upcoming content, with The Block set to premiere tonight.

  1. I do agree they need to improve on their coverage but no need to exaggerate.. I do agree with most things but never had any issues with the 9Now App and I was on it all the time.
Yes Karl & Ally should not have been on the Opening Ceremony, Ally should not have been hosting Primetime and Brooke Boney & Cate Campbell were no good at all, I recommend they should of had Danika Mason/Lauren Phillips instead of Brooke Boney, and Stephanie Rice should have been there instead of Cate Campbell.

  2. This was the worst coverage of the olympics I’ve seen. Commentators that had zero knowledge or experience in the sports they were commentating on (Mark Taylor covering diving was a punishment none of us deserved). You had no idea of what you were watching was live, delayed or the previous days events. Same event on both tv channels. Hosts that seemed to have forgotten that the Paralympics are still to come. Here’s hoping Channel 7 gets the rights to 2028.

  3. They may have dominated and good for them but the coverage was terrible and a complete mess. Sometimes it wasn’t clear what was live and what wasn’t. Presenters were woeful and most days Ally looked like she didn’t want to be there. They just didn’t have knowledge and whats worse is the dual offerings were often the same on both channels, whats the point of that? As for 9Now well it was a buffering mess. It would always freeze and that doesn’t happen with any other tv app i have. The commentary team for some sports was just strange. I just really hope they learn from this going forward, especially with the Paralympics just a couple of week away, but i’m sure they will praise themselves saying they did a great job when they really didn’t. We watched because its the Olympics, not for the channel. Thats it. Also Stan sport may have been good but think about it, its Nine owned. Present the best behind a paywall and seconds to the main audience?

  4. One of my biggest pet peeves about 9’s Linear Olympics telecast is that they air delayed events (which has ended 20-30 mins ago). I watched athletics Via 9Now feed & noticed that the events were finished, but when I switched to 9, they showed it on delay. It makes me hard to know whether the events are live or delayed.
I tuned to rowing on Nine. During half-way of the rowing telecast, 9 abruptly cut off the rowing & headed straight to swimming. I wanted to see the rowing, but all of a sudden, they wanted to beam swimming events. Why does 9 want to screen swimming? On many occasions, 9 keep on chopping & changing events over time.
Alternate coverage via 9now is better so I don’t need to put up with 9 showing replays of events. I don’t have Stan but at least they have far better coverage hence it is live, ad-free & 4K, meaning you won’t need to put up with that 9’s veteran VO guy promoting The Block & Karl/Ally bumbling on nonsense during the telecast.

  5. Nine will clearly be happy with ratings. Unfriendly time zone for live gold medal events and still stellar ratings. I did note sevens Sunrise and evening news still rated pretty much their usual numbers. Sunrise around 380k and news around 1.2-3m. Yes nine were more in both cases but presumably Olympics related.

  6. The linear broadcast by channel 9 was dire.
Th few times I happened to switch to channel 9, I found often both their broadcast channels were showing the same event, there were ads on both at the same time and also trying to push their telecast as live when it wasn’t, a quick look at the Paris app proved that and I was caught out in the mens tennis doubles semi when after enough ad breaks I switched to Stan only to see them celebrating.
Even this mornings closing ceremony was on delay by at least 2 minutes.
Certainly glad I had Stan Sport that’s for sure, their broadcast was stellar and had alternative commentary meaning I didn’t have to put up with Tubby Taylor on the diving (Tho he did seem to do his research!) And the woefully inexperienced Cate Campbell who should never be used ever again.

    1. What did they have Cate doing? At the Tokyo Olympics, Seven had her doing the poolside chats and I thought she was excellent in that role.

  7. I wonder if Today can hold the extra viewers it got over Olympics. Also are Nine launching any brand new shows directly post Olympics or is The Block the only one?

    1. Obviously Nine won’t be able to hold a 66% share this week. They will be hoping that a few rehashes do well but mostly that all the promotion of The Block will means that it wins its slot for next few months. And there are the paralympics too.

      1. There are also other shows to come including Footy Show one off edition, the NRL Finals and the GF. I wonder whether The 100 with Andy Lee is coming back to Nine during the 2nd half of the year, DK?
