Season 3 of Great Coastal Railway Journeys premieres this week on SBS with trusty host, Michael Portillo.

It screens in double episodes.

Episode One: Axminster to Budleigh Salterton
Michael’s first journey takes him from the magnificent Jurassic Coast to the rugged tip of the Lizard Peninsula and beyond to the spectacular Isles of Scilly. In the seaside town of Lyme Regis, Michael traces the remarkable discoveries of pioneering palaeontologist, Mary Anning, as he walks nearly 200 million years of prehistory along a limestone ledge known as the Ammonite Pavement.

Episode Two: Exeter to Plymouth
Michael Portillo’s railway exploration of the rugged coastlines of Dorset, Devon and Cornwall reaches Devon’s capital town, Exeter, dominated since the Middle Ages by its magnificent gothic cathedral. Michael joins the stonemasons charged with conserving the intricate medieval stonework.

7:30pm Tuesday on SBS.

  1. The Great British/Coastal Railway Journey episodes are about 29 minutes in length, but when played in the 7:30pm timeslot are scheduled as 2 x 30 minute episodes with ads. Even accounting for the fact some time can be saved by removal of duplicate credits between episodes and the “Next Time” tease at the end of the first episode, there is still about 3-4 minutes of each episode that is culled.

A few years ago, these episodes were scheduled at 2 x 35 minutes each, so running 7:30-8:40pm and fitting in the entire episode in (except the end credits of the first episode and opening credits of the second episode), but at least none of the core content was lost.
