US supernatural / horror series Dead Boy Detectives, based on a comic by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, has ended after a single season on Netflix.
The Sandman spin-off debuted in April and starred George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson and Yuyu Kitamura plus Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Lukas Gage, David Iacono and Ruth Connell.
The show had somewhat lukewarm reviews and a distinctly YA feel and now wraps without resolving major plot threads.
One of the biggest questions looming over a possible season 2 was the fate of Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), who co-showrunner Steve Yockey teased had “quite a journey in front of her” during a post-finale interview.
On the show’s future more generally, he said: “We’re just in a ‘wait and see’ mode right now. We have a plan for season 2, we have ideas for season 3 [for] any Netflix execs who are watching.”
The Sandman‘s television universe will continue to expand with the show’s second season, currently expected next year, but any further spin-offs seem unlikely at this time.

Another interesting show to join the wasteland of 1 season axing’s that are now becoming more common on the streaming services.
I’m beyond the YA (young adult) target demographic but I thought this was great, likewise the adjacent Lockwood & Co which was also axed acter one season. Netflix is fast to give up on shows before they have a chance to build an audience.
That is a shame. I really liked this show and the leads had great chemistry
Really disappointed in this decision, we really enjoyed the show. There is so much rubbish on Netflix, it was good to actually find a show that was compelling, not dragged out, and out of the ordinary.
