Axed: Time Bandits

Big budget fantasy series filmed in NZ & Canada ends at just a single season.

If you thought Free to Air was a tough environment things can be even more harsh in the streaming world.

Apple TV is not proceeding with a second season of Time Bandits -which had its finale less than a month ago on the streaming service.

It was a big budget fantasy which, according to Deadline, did not attract al arge enough audience and was not able to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings. On Rotten Tomatoes it carries a 78% fresh critic rating.

The series, based on the Terry Gilliam movie of the same name, was created for television by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners) and Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), and produced by Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content’s AC Studios and MRC.

Filmed in NZ & Canada, it featured Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Rune Temte, Charlyne Yi, Rachel House, Kiera Thompson, James Dryden, Felicity Ward, Francesca Mills and Imaan Hadchiti.

  1. This was pitched at a preteen audience, and they’re not watching TV anymore to be honest. They’re on YouTube or gaming. At least that’s what mine were doing.

  2. Perhaps it was a big ask to expect Time Bandits to crack Nielsen’s Top 10, remakes of classic movies is a fickle market in the modern era. I find it interesting that Taika Waititi keeps himself busy by being involved with projects with a narrower audience than mainstream movies, this show didn’t work but hopefully something more successful will come his way soon.
