In 1985 ex-Skyhooks frontman ‘Shirley’ Strachan performed California Girls on Midday, after it was revived by US singer David Lee Roth.
Accompanying him is the Nine orchestra under the baton of Geoff Harvey and dancers choreographed by Tony Bartuccio.
It’s pretty overt by today’s standards, but how good is the band?
Missin’ you Shirl…

Is the water coloured cellophane?
Yes it’s clear cellophane lit with coloured lights. Glad Wrap can be used for the same effect too. They’ve also added a video effect done live through the vision switcher on the bottom third of the screen to give the “water” a moving wavy look – you can see the edges of it on the left and right of the screen. It’s actually a very simple set but they’ve thrown every bit of TV magic and “smoke and mirrors” at it to make it look quite effective. Lovely seeing Shirl again and really miss him.
Thanks.
The simple ideas were (and often continue to be) the best.
