Here comes the AFL….

The Block topped the ratings week, but AFL is now flexing its muscle for Seven.

In the ratings battle, AFL is turning up the heat.

Seven’s share on Friday night, in particular, helped the network to another weekly win.

This week Seven adds 7Plus rights to AFL (Brownlow Medal and Grand Final) while two ‘interstate’ teams will only drive up viewership.

Meanwhile Sunday’s 1.57m for The Block is testament to its endurance in its 20th season. It topped the week.

Nine News also managed a win at 1.46m for Sunday over Seven News‘ 1.3m.

Have You Been Paying Attention? was best for 10 at 772,000.

  1. Had to laugh when 7news had an ad during the AFL final on Saturday night at around 6.30pm saying “7News – Unstoppable”. Even in Sydney, 7 News did not air until after the AFL around 8pm, so not sure that was a good time to promote their news as being Unstoppable!

  2. I get the feeling that the AFL GF will set new records with a record breaking 7+ BVOD figure. Sydney and Brisbane will see increase in ratings thanks to Swans/Lions in the GF. channel 7 has this weeks win in the bag thanks to the GF.
I think the reason why AFL wanted Katy Perry at the GF May got to do with her attending the Taylor Swift eras concert earlier this year?

    1. Wouldn’t be so sure, two NRL Prelims in prime time vs AFL GF in daytime. Seven will need very heavy lifting from the Brownlow. But GF is doubtless to be the top program.

  3. “while two ‘interstate’ (AFL) teams will only drive up viewership.”
Maybe. Or it could mean the Melbourne audience will be well down and offset the hoped increase in viewers in Brissie and Sin City. We’ll have to wait and see!
