Simon Baker avoids drink driving conviction

Actor director was remorseful for his actions and placed on a good behaviour bond.

Actor-Director Simon Baker has avoided a drink driving conviction after appearing at Mullumbimby Local Court today.

Baker, 55, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested after police noted him driving erratically for about 8km on Booyong Rd, in the state’s northeast, about 2.11am on July 20, the court was told.

But a worldwide Microsoft outage meant police systems were offline and a formal breath test could not be completed.

“Ordinarily police would have proceeded with a breath analysis but they had to use the old-fashioned sobriety test,” magistrate Kathy Crittenden said.

He was observed to be unsteady on his feet and smelt of alcohol, telling officers he had consumed four glasses of wine at a dinner from 6pm.

“(Baker) was very polite and co-operative … extremely remorseful for his actions,” Crittenden said.

The Boy Swallows Universe star has since completed a traffic offenders’ rehabilitation program.

The court found he was unlikely to offend again and placed him on a nine-month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.
