3.42m watch Panthers win NRL Grand Final

NRL Grand Final draws the fourth biggest audience all year and a huge 50% share for Nine.

A whopping 3.42m viewers watched the Panthers triumph at the NRL Grand Final last night -the fourth biggest audience all year.

There were 917,000 watching in Sydney, 567,000 in Brissy and 529,000 in Melbourne. Nine also claimed the highest ever BVOD Audience for a NRL Grand Final at 762,000.

Nine drew a huge primetime share of nearly 50% -more than double its nearest rival and setting it up nicely for the week.

Against those sort of numbers it was tough going elsewhere.

Nine News led at 6pm with 1.22m.

Seven News was 1.19m for Seven. 7News Spotlight was 381,000 then Crime Investigation Aust: Most Infamous (208,000)

  1. Hi I cannot believe over 500000 watched the NRL in Melbourne, I know not one of my family or friends watched the NRL. I feel the ratings people make up the numbers

  2. I saw the NRLGF via SPidercam, meaning that I don’t have to suffer through ads, pop-up promos of Nine’s shows and the substandard commentary team. The commentator screams way too much and made me feel uncomfortable. Watching the game through Spidercam meant that I can hear the crowd.

  3. Probably not *completely* fair to make year-on-year comparisons after the change in how TV ratings are counted, but it would seem that Sydney and as expected, Melbourne had more NRL Grand Final viewers than last year while Brisbane had less than 2023. Just goes to show what impact the presence (or lack thereof) of a local team can have!

I’d assume Adelaide & Perth ratings for the NRL Grand Final would’ve been pretty flat around the high five figure/low six figure mark, although rugby league is pretty much a niche affair in those two cities anyway with nothing likely to change until local teams (I believe the Western Bears are supposed to come in during the next few years, no idea if there are any future plans for the NRL to re-enter Adelaide) re-enter the mix. And even then…

  4. So, in comparison with ratings for the other footy code grand final, is it valid to compare 4.0m for AFL with 3.4m for NRL?
If so, that is significant given that AFL GF was played on a Saturday afternoon and not in prime time.

    1. It’s an interesting one at the least, as is AFL won the traditional TV Viewership (4.02 m vs 3.42 m) and NRL the BVOD viewership (762k vs 655k), does that mean more are out at Pubs and Clubs for the NRL one and more at home for the AFL one (BBQ’s etc), granted it is also Saturday vs Sunday (NSW did have Labour Day holiday on Monday though).

So yep, have to wonder if the AFL one would have been higher in Primetime or if that 4.02 m figure is about what it would have got anyway, and if the BVOD would have been higher or about the same.
