Amy Shark, Marcia Hines and Kyle Sandilands are returning as judges on Australian Idol for 2025 according to a press article this week.
The Daily Telegraph reports all three were back behind the table at auditions in Sydney.
“We’ve had a good couple of days, from last year we had such a different diverse group. Last year it inspired a lot of great people with some styles we haven’t seen,” Sandilands said.
“Last season naturally set the bar super high, so I think our expectations are even bigger this season,” Shark said.
“We’re seeing people who are extremely different who I think where before in the past may have been a straight up no but now we are questioning whether they might just have a quirky side, maybe we will see them down the line that they haven’t brought,” Hines added.
Seven is yet to confirm its 2025 Upfronts, expected in November.

Look, Seven has the Voice and Australian Idol. The question is how long can one network retains these two shows of the same genre? I cant remember who won and the names of the past winners. That is a concern and should ring alarm bells for the producers at Seven. There is no long lasting legacy at all. The last show that had greater success was the X Factor!
No it doesn’t worry execs. As long as it rates and sells ads. They have moved on from the concerns around creating careers.
I am glad you said it David. I’ve been holding my tongue as there have been various comments along these lines with other similar posts in the past. Now I feel I can add. Seven are trying to compete with MAFS and The Block. The Voice does a decent job against the block (the block usually wins but the gap is 1-200k). MAFS still slays all competition till this points. Am not sure when Oz Idol will be scheduled but from memory, it rates ok. Quite expensive to produce I am guessing but at least seven are in the mix and I would imagine it creates a lot of work for people in the biz. I suspect Oz Idol was closely scrutinized by sevens executives but not because it does or doesn’t create idols but because it is expensive and am guessing it’s a close call with solid but not spectacular ratings.
Looks like another exciting start to the new year for Seven, surrendering to Nine and letting MAFS just dominate ratings.
While neither program appeals to me personally, I thought Australian Idol held up OK in the ratings against Married At First Sight this year?
In addition: Given that the genre of Dating, Relationship & Wedding themed “reality” TV has kind of faded in popularity/profile a bit over the past couple of years (with the Bachelor franchise rested and others quietly going away), 2025 could be the year that people even start turning their backs on MAFS and Farmer.
As for Kyle Sandilands, it goes without saying that I absolutely can’t stand him and am glad Melbournians rejected him + Jackie O at brekky during the latest radio ratings survey. But that’s probably a topic for another website!
The problem with being content with “held up well” it is it confines you to the losers lounge. Say we agree Idol held up well- so did Dream Home, so is Voice, so is MKR… do any of them beat Nine shows? No. Holding up well is fine but they all want to win and Seven seems content with losing
Seven have claimed in the past they want to be the number one rating network (whereas nine have claimed their goal is number one in particular demos). To achieve this, seven don’t have to beat MAFS. They have to close the gap and then AFL brings them home. Year to date 2024, seven have won 21/38 weeks (Olympics are excluded so a 38 week year rather than 40). Nine have won 10 weeks assuming they win the current week which seems a safe bet given Sundays grand final. I recognize weekly wins are not the final determination but it’s makes my point.
Seven trails Nine in total viewers, streaming, 16-39s , 25-54s so I don’t see how weekly wins matter. There is no spin that can disguise the numbers. Look at Block, MAFS ratings. Those two shows alone do so much damage
7 leads national weeks won 21 to 11
7 leads in total viewers 29.1 to 29.0.
9 leads 25-54 viewers 33.3% to 27.5%
9 leads metro weeks on 17 to 15
Taken from MediaSpy
So 7 seems to be doing what they wanted to do in terms of having more total people
Seven leads the year 26 weeks to Nines 6.
Seven lead overall, even with the Olympics included for Nine.
So much for your ‘losers lounge’ reference.
Wonder if Kyle will blame any of his Melbourne audience of Idol…
Boring! Show needs a refresh of new judges and get at least one overseas superstar on the panel. Also needs to get back to really, truly Live shows, not pre-recorded shows and 3 different finales recorded and then the winner is screened many months later!!
Disagree we dont need any overseas judges to judge Australian talent. I can’t stand Kyle but it is also good to have musicians from different generations on a show like this. Yes agree it needs to be actually live like Big Brother
I believe Idol is live in the final weeks – The Voice is all pre-recorded with multiple endings
thawed for your convenience.
I think ur confusing Idol with Voice. Idol is Live. The performances are done Saturday night & showed on Sunday (so that’s kinda Live). The results are Live Live. They don’t have multiple endings etc
