Patricia Karvelas will leave her Radio National Breakfast role to take on an expanded role across ABC platforms in 2025.
She will undertake a key anchoring role on the ABC News Channel in national politics in addition to hosting Q+A, plus a new politics podcast and weekly political wrap The Party Room.
“After a decade it’s time to change it up and I’m ready to lean into a new cross-platform role,” Karvelas said.
“I want to thank the ABC for the opportunities it has provided me through my decade here. It continues to be the most important public institution in the country in my view and I want to help build its connections with voters across the country.
“I’ll miss the Radio National audience enormously. There’s something magical about waking up when the country is asleep to bring the big news and conversations to the country.”
ABC Director, News Justin Stevens said: “Patricia Karvelas is a talented presenter and formidable political journalist. She has done a superb job over many years on the RN network.
“In 2025 we want her to play a bigger role across our platforms to cover politics for our audience. We’re excited to see her have a broader audience across audio, TV and digital for ABC News.”
Details of the new audio and TV projects will be announced in coming weeks.

It will be interesting to know whether she was pushed or jumped. The name Kim Williams was mentioned in other reporting, which indicates a push. I was not a fan before she started the gig.
PK always struck me as pushing for a scoop, but in the process always seem to ask repetitive questions that even I knew as a non-journalist / politician they would not answer. So I found her style a bit disrespectful to her audience that she persisted in doing so – wasted limited interviewing time when she would have been better asking more thoughtful and probing questions.
I used to listen to RN Breakfast fairly religiously, but in the last 2 years I only lightly dip into and out of the show. Seems like I was not alone in my listening habits for this show.
