“End of an Era” for The Newsreader
It's farewell to the News at Six team. But is it also the final season?

A trailer has dropped for The Newsreader‘s third season, expected in early February on ABC.
But is it the final season?
The trailer refers to this being “End of an Era” which is how ABC referred to it at this week’s Upfront presentation.
Chief Content Officer Chris Oliver-Taylor told TV Tonight, “The Newsreader is such a loved show, so you’d never want to close the door on anything. But I don’t see it returning.”
In June writer Michael Lucas confirmed it would be the last for stars Sam Reid & Anna Torv, who make up the News at Six team.
“For a long time (since season one in fact) we’ve seen this saga as three acts, and the coming series is designed as an emotional and cathartic third act for the whole vivid ensemble. This will be very clear to audiences when they see it,” he told TV Tonight.
“Perhaps, down the track if there was an opportunity to do something else news based, or maybe even revisit some of the ensemble— never say never. But this is a complete story, and certainly the writers, Emma (Freeman, director), Jo (Werner, producer) and I have approached it that way. We’re really proud of it and excited for audiences to see it.”
And check out the recreation of the 1989 Logie Awards in this clip…

I love this show so much, but I do think its fair that the writing team has been wanting to do this over three seasons only. I wouldn’t mind a spin-off/sequel series with a new cast of characters taking place in the 90s…but thats just Frontline, isn’t it? (I should really watch that show lmao)
Either way, I’m going to miss this show. Easily one of, if not, the *best* ABC drama series from this decade.
It could have viably wrapped up with the last season finale too. Maybe the producers have been hedging their bets on renewals and contracts, we’ll see.
In the final episode News at Six is axed and replaced with Frontline
What a promo. Very powerful and great acting. I am looking forward to this season.
Quality not quantity focus is good.
