The race that tops the nation

Knight's Choice wins the Cup as Nine pulls out one of the bigger audiences so far this year.

Every year I diligently file the ratings results of the Melbourne Cup with comparison to previous years.

But this year we need to remember that since 2024, ratings now add Live / Catch-Up BVOD as well as Regional + Metro figures into both a Reach figure and a National TV Audience (aka average).

If you read other media today on how the Race compared with previous years, be sure they make these distinctions.

With this in mind the Melbourne Cup Race, won by Knight’s Choice and jockey Robbie Dolan, drew a National TV Audience of 1.91m which is still one of the bigger audiences so far this year.

2024: 1.91m
————- OzTAM Ratings Overhaul
2023: 1.110m
2022: 1.02m
2021: 1.21m
2020: 1.41m
2019: 1.32m
2018: 1.84m
2017: 1.8m
2016: 1.99m
2015: 2.07m
2014: 2.12m
2013: 2.17m

The coverage gave Nine a great lead in to its primetime shows.

So did it win Tuesday? Yes. But so did Seven, in a photo-finish for 29.49% share (a great result for Seven given the context).

The Block drew 1.18m ahead of My Kitchen Rules (972,000), 7:30 (865,000), Back Roads (531,000) and Taskmaster Australia (332,000).

Later The Cheap Seats was 403,000 then Trump on Trial (389,000), Take 5 with Zan Rowe (338,000), Alert: Missing Persons Unit (335,000 / 169,000),.

Nine News won its slot with 1.35m as did A Current Affair (1.13m) and Tipping Point (741,000).

Seven News was 1.29m then Home & Away (867,000) and The Chase (583,000).

ABC News averaged 875,000. Hard Quiz (330,000), Louis Theroux Interviews (155,000) and A Bite to Eat with Alice (134,000) followed.

10 News First scored 356,000 for 10. The Project was 303,000 then Deal or No Deal (267,000) and Law & Order: SVU (154,000).

On SBS it was SBS World News (178,000 / 157,000), Great Coastal Railway Journeys (161,000), The Zelensky Story (148,000), Great Train Journeys from Above (107,000) and Mastermind (83,000).

  1. Yess.. what a Great Result for Channel 9 Melbourne Cup Coverage!
Will like to hear all the doubters, haters of 9 Now, All Silent..
Channel 9 Coverage is way Better than what Channel 10 & 7 do.
And this will only get even Bigger & Better for Channel 9.!!

    1. Seems an odd statement given seven tied with nine in over night numbers. Not sure what nine paid for the Melbourne Cup but given all the coverage is before prime time (so all you are really paying for is a great lead in) and given most people watch with the sound turned down until the race itself (meaning promoting other shows during the telecast is perhaps less effective), I’m sure nine are quite satisfied but am guessing so is seven. And no, I’m not a nine hater (I watch mostly ten and ABC).

      1. Not all is about Primetime.. 9 promoted it well, marketing, they do their Sports Coverage better than 7 & 10, and their 1st Melbourne Cup for Nine had good Ratings in Years.! All 7 were saying is that their Races in Sydney/NSW like The Everest, The Big Dance etc is the Best and will Overtake Victoria/Melbourne Cup. Total BS, that will Never Ever happen, 7 got Smashed.. nowhere near Nine’s. And I’m from Sydney but Melbourne is the Best, the Real Sporting Capital of Australia!
The only thing that Seven has that people are used of is Bruce McAvaney that’s all.. and he can’t be there Forever, it’s downhill from there!
