What I’ve Been Watching: Melissa Leong

Dessert Masters host is a fan of Matlock -and has a secret ambition to appear on a soap.

What shows are on your must-see TV list lately?
ML: I’ve been wanting to sit down and watch the new Matlock, featuring the indomitable Kathy Bates. I have such admiration for her as an artist, but it also underscores the very real loss one feels in underestimating women, particularly of a certain age in this society. Strong women are the backbone of everything…even the small screen! Long may it continue!

Which guilty pleasure show are you reluctant to admit watching?
ML: Just like food, I don’t believe in guilty pleasure tv… because if you love it, you love it! I will admit that I anxiety re-watch shows a lot when things are a bit stressful or full-on with work (the irony of making TV!). Shows like Archer, The Gilmore Girls, Schitts Creek and Gossip Girl are at the top of the list.

When you settle down for a night on the couch what are your ‘must-haves?’
ML: Unfortunately I don’t really have time right now to have a good binge session of great entertainment on the couch. But if I did, it’d be a glass of really good Pinot, some fig and walnut biscotti, a little bit of cheese, maybe some páte and some pickles as well as something sweet. That sounds pretty perfect to me.

What show would you secretly love to appear on?
ML: This year, I appeared on Playschool and that was an absolute dream come true. I love iconic Australian television…so maybe it’d be Neighbours? The show I REALLY want to guest on right now is Drag Race! I would LITERALLY *gay faint* to be asked on as a guest judge. I’ll even wear double Spanx, acrylic earrings and a cut crease, I am THAT committed.

Why do you love Dessert Masters and what can we expect to see in the season finale?
ML: What I love about Dessert Masters is the opportunity to dream, create and bring to life things mere mortals could never come up with. It is truly so unique and special. What you can expect to see in the season finale is more heart than you could anticipate. For all their skill, achievement and capacity to make magic into reality…they are human beings doing the impossible, and dare I say, exceeding even their own expectations. The triumph of humanity is my favourite part of this gig!

Dessert Masters finale 7pm Sunday on 10.
