Not sure why “Boy Swallows Universe” and “Colin From Accounts” are being nominated in the “International” awards? They’ve already been nominated in the regular AACTA awards honouring Australian film and TV, so shouldn’t be taking up nomination space that should have gone to actual international productions, bit like double dipping!
I think, Boy Swallows Universe is in with a chance – a universal story told from an Australian and fresh perspective.
While I loved Colin From Accounts, I think it is too quintessential Aussie to gain wider international support / praise. That episode Waterfall was a pearler, but I doubt anyone from outside Oz or Sydney would truly get the humour in that episode.
After the Party could be the surprise. While I personally tired of the obsessive nature of the main character, I could see it being a hit with a more international audience. That opening scene about teaching kids about porn was a beauty to hook you as this is something different.
Keep in mind this is voted for by a tiny panel of Australians, and it’s always seemed like part of AACTA’s point in doing these at all is to be boosters for Australian talent and productions, so they may be in with more of a chance than you think.
