ABC NSW News from Parramatta this Sunday

A new-look ABC bulletin with Jeremy Fernandez next week in NSW.

Sunday’s 7pm ABC News bulletin in NSW will broadcast from Parramatta studios for the very first time.

ABC Director, News Justin Stevens said, “ABC Parramatta locates our NSW newsroom within one of Australia’s largest, fastest growing and most diverse communities,” he said. “It means we’re even more closely representing and connecting with our community.

“Putting to air the first 7PM bulletin is the result of a massive amount of work from teams across the ABC and represents an important technological step forward for the organisation.

“ABC Parramatta will serve as a model for the ABC in the future – a sophisticated technology facility that promotes new production practices with agile content sharing and distribution.”

ABC confirmed the following details around Studio 91, Parramatta:

Studio 91’s multi-purpose set features 100 square metres of LED panels arrayed across 12 screens, with the latest slimline technology maximising space in the studio.

The studio is fully equipped for AR graphics and perspective tracking across the LED screens. The AR elements will be progressively introduced in the new year after final technical work.

Staff from the NSW newsroom and News Channel and our studio directors participated in workshops with the design studio to develop the design concept and finalise requirements.

  1. Issues with this indulgent investment in NSW aside, let’s hope the ABC has enough awareness to not use a background of Parramatta nor go on and on about their shiny new Parramatta facility on the news channel or any other output to a national audience.

    1. Given that ABC News has run with a mostly standardised set design around the nation for a very long time now, it’d be quite reasonable to assume the new set design at Parramatta (which looks pretty good, going by the preview here) will in some form or another, eventually be rolled out to the other states/territories.

Backdrop wise, I’d probably expect Parramatta to be showcased on the NSW 7pm news but most likely not the national/News Channel bulletins…barring the occasional simulcast of a local bulletin for a major story, etc.

As for whether or not the ABC should even be moving to Parramatta in the first place, let’s not forget their TV studios were in Gore Hill until the Early 2000s. And other broadcasters in Sydney have moved to new facilities in recent times.

I can’t say exactly how often the ABC should upgrade or move but would think up to date Sydney studios are a better use of taxpayers’ money than some of the other things the ABC have splashed out on in recent years!
