Ian Smith shares ‘significant’ health update

Neighbours icon shares some welcome news following a recent PET scan.

Actor Ian Smith has shared some encouraging news revealing his cancer diagnosis, whilst not rescinded, has some welcome news.

“I did a PET scan and the words, I believe, were ‘significant metabolic change, significant shrinkage of tumour’,” he tells TV Week.

“I’ve gone from a threat of dying this coming March to maybe a few more months… and now, God, who knows? It’s not a cure and it won’t be a cure, but I certainly have got a year, maybe two.

“That’s amazing. It really is.”

Earlier this month Smith, 85, revealed he had been given a terminal cancer diagnosis – a cancer called pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma.

He filmed his final Neighbours scenes, including with Anne Charleston, who returns to the soap briefly as a new character. They will screen in 2025.

Neighbours returns 4pm Monday January 6 on 10.
