Ian Smith to film last chapter to raise awareness

Neighbours veteran hopes to raise awareness about assisted dying through a personal documentary project.

Ian Smith has agreed to allow cameras to film his final journey as he deals with his cancer diagnosis.

Yesterday the legendary Neighbours actor revealed he has been given a terminal diagnosis due to a cancer called pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma.

Speaking to 10’s Angela Bishop he recalled seeing “good deaths and bad deaths” from those close to him.

Showbiz reporter Peter Ford today told 6PR Smith had agreed to cameras filming him across coming months, and hopefully years.

“He wants to do this because he does want to raise awareness about assisted dying, and he believes that doctors either don’t, or, in some cases, can’t, give you the information of the options that are available to you… not that he intends to take up those options, as far as I know,” he said.

“But I think because he’s had so many people around him die as a result of Cancer, I think he feels it’s a subject that needs to be put on the table.

“So, a very brave thing for him to go and do.”

  1. Having been a screen writer for so many years, this is in keeping with Ian’s drive to tell stories that need to be told. And what an incredibly powerful tale it will be be.
