More AFL shuffles at Seven

Line-up and production news keeps on coming ahead of 2025 AFL season.

AFL news keeps emerging from Seven corners with reports commentator Brian ‘BT’ Taylor will move from Friday to Thursday nights in 2025.

The Herald Sun reports he will only partner with regular Friday night co-commentator James Brayshaw for marquee matches such as Anzac Day and finals. His ‘Roaming Brian’ segment could also move to Thursdays. Brayshaw is expected to remain on Friday nights.

Hamish McLachlan is expected to join Taylor on Thursdays, while new analyst Kane Cornes is keen for the Thursday night expert commentator role.

Taylor’s commentary can be polarising to viewers, drawing media attention for alleged bias which stirs fans.

Meanwhile Eddie McGuire-owned JAM TV is set to produce will produce Sunday Footy Feast for Seven and The Wash Up, which will run immediately after the final siren of Seven’s Sunday afternoon match broadcasts.

It comes despite McGuire’s digs at “Channel Copycat” -a remark he made after the poaching of talent from Nine’s Footy Classified.

JAM TV has previously produced Talking Footy for Seven until 2018, when it subsequently moved production. That appears not to be returning in 2025.

“We produce shows for every network including Seven. So nothing new in any of this,” McGuire has remarked.

“Our AFL production team led by Head of AFL, Gary O’Keeffe, are working in the background to piece together the best possible line-up in 2025,’’ Head of Sport Chris Jones said.

“We look forward to sharing more details about Seven’s 2025 AFL commentary line-up in the new year.”

  1. One of the problems is that Seven doesn’t have enough top-notch AFL commentators. At least we’ve moved on from BT & JB commentary. However, BT pairing with Hamish is not very good for many fans due to Hamish’s smugness and bitter personality. Plus, BT’s commentary has certainly worsened over the last two decades, with an increase in mistakes and irrelevant comments, especially when mispronouncing players’ names in a way that feels unprofessional. Fans want to see a fresh change in the commentary box, however fans are stuck with the same old commentators. If I were you, I would rather turn my TV off and listen to radio instead so I won’t need to put up with pop-up ads and the VO guy.

  2. It would be on 7mate if on a multichannel. 7TWO rarely gets used for AFL content as it’s not in HD.

Also highly possible The Wash Up will be a 7plus show.

  3. Was kinda hoping that this was news Seven dropped him. He really is one of the worst commentators out there. The amount of fumbles he makes in a game is ridiculous and the stuff he says….just stop Channel 7.

      1. Gerard Whateley and Anthony Hudson are doing Friday Night games for Foxtel which you would be hard pressed to find a better duo. That’s all I care about. I won’t be watching Ch7 almost ever now for footy games tbh… not with the increased output from Foxtel/Kayo. My ears are already quivering at the thought of Hamish McLachlan and Brian Taylor on Thursday nights. My God. At least we had most of 2024 as a reprieve from the pretentious and pompous McLachlan. Awful.

  4. ” … The Wash Up, which will run immediately after the final siren of Seven’s Sunday afternoon match broadcasts.”
This is most puzzling. Many years ago, Seven forced the AFL to move traditional 2:10pm game starting times to 3:20pm so that weekend matches finish just before 6pm news – i.e. viewers would seamlessly stay tuned for the news. So why would The Wash Up start at 6pm the same time as Seven News? If it’s on a digital channel, few would migrate over (and if they did, they’d miss Seven news – hardly what Seven would want).
David, can you help me understand this? thanks

    1. It’ll be on 7TWO. You’ll probably find most of their AFL magazine content will run first on 7TWO in prime time, then be screened on the main channel later at night
