Lawyers have been all over Mitch McTaggart’s annual special The Last Year of Television (after this year in TV they really had to) and it is set to unleash once more.
McTaggart’s take-down of Australian television is always must-see.
Here’s a taste of what’s to come….
It’s that time of year again – see out 2024 in style as Mitch McTaggart takes you through the best and worst of Australian television.
What was the deal with all that Bruce Lerhmann stuff?
Why was the news saying a baby got kicked out of a live comedy show?
Did a lot of TV executives quit this year? Like, more than normal?
Let Mitch explain all with his unrivalled research and brutal wit. It’s a roast, it’s a clip show, it’s the ultimate annual love letter to Australian TV.

I have no doubt that, as usual, this will be the best Australian TV show of the year.
A show about TV that’s not on TV but behind a paywall. Too risky, perhaps, for our FTA Networks to air but would be quite safe on their streaming channels. No intestinal fortitude. It’ll probably end up on YouTube later.
Previous incarnations of Backside/Last Year of Television aired on SBS VICELAND before moving to Foxtel/Binge about 2-3 years ago. While I can’t say with 100% certainty, it wouldn’t surprise me if Mitch and his programs moving platforms had something to do with John Beohm moving from SBS VICELAND to Binge.
Either way, McTaggart’s style isn’t really my thing – IMO it feels too much like a poor man’s version of what Charlie Brooker used to do with his various “Wipe” specials/programs in the UK. Others may disagree, but I’d much rather see David M Green (who’s kicking goals with VHS Revue) get the chance of a higher profile gig on Australian TV.
The full episode of last year’s show was uploaded to the official Binge Youtube account in April (and thankfully, not geoblocked).
You might have to wait a bit, but I reckon you’ll eventually get to see it without paying.
Fans of his past shows will be looking forward to his appraisal of Fam Time.
