Has Facebook lifted its ban on news in Australia?

Doubtful.

But there are a few rare exceptions that appear to have been spared the shut down.

Over the weekend posts were published for The Project, Seven News and Sunrise.

Not so lucky are ABC News, Nine News, SBS News, 10 News or the Today show.

Also out of luck are 7:30, Four Corners, Insiders, Q+A, The Feed.

Strange algorithms at work….

The Project‘s Lisa Wilkinson last night interviewed former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins who alleges she was raped inside a Parliament House office in 2019.

The story was broken by news.com.au.

It reported that a man working for then-defence industry minister Linda Reynolds took a 24-year-old female media staffer into Parliament House after a Friday night drinking session in March 2019 and allegedly raped her inside the defence industry minister’s office. The man’s name has not been revealed.

Ms. Higgins says she did not make a formal complaint because she wanted to protect her job and the reputation of the Liberal Party. Alarmingly, a follow-up meeting was held inside the same office where the incident allegedly occurred -a decision the Government now regrets.

ACT Policing have confirm they received a report in April 2019 in relation to an alleged assault at Parliament House.

Ms. Higgins did speak to the Australian Federal Police and her chief of staff in the days that followed.

But she ultimately asked the police to halt the investigation on Saturday, April 13, just two days after the Prime Minister called the election.

ABC reports Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Government “takes all such matters, all matters of workplace safety, very very seriously”.

“Everyone should feel safe in their workplace, wherever that is.

“The reports today are deeply distressing.”

Last year Four Corners report “Inside the Canberra Bubble”which made allegations about members of parliament and staffers, drawing attention to their behaviour in the context of Malcolm Turnbull’s “bonk ban.”

It led to questions from Communications Minister Paul Fletcher to ABC chair Ita Buttrose and senate estimate questions of ABC managing director David Anderson.

The first week of ratings has been run and won, and entertainment numbers are concerningly down on 2020 -but they may have been impacted by the delayed Australian Open.

Friday’s AO match between Nick Kyrgios and Dominic Thiem was the top audience of the week at 1.1m metro viewers.

Seven’s Holey Moley drew up to 629,000 metro viewers which is well down on its debut the previous week, but it topped the week in entertainment, followed by ABC’s Hard Quiz.

Amazing Race Australia had some success for 10, which is just as well given other shows did terrible business.

Kyrgios scores as Nine recodes Australian Open https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/kyrgios-scores-as-nine-recodes-australian-open.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/kyrgios-scores-as-nine-recodes-australian-open.html#comments Wed, 10 Feb 2021 22:58:11 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=409737

After two nights of lukewarm numbers, Nine has its first big win in the Australian Open tennis ratings.

The win is down to two factors: a compelling Nick Kyrgios / Ugo Umbert  match and some clever recoding by Nine into shorter tennis portions -the latter pushes the averages higher.

Nine coded the tennis into 4 segments last night, which is not dissimilar to how Seven used to structure its AO: 7pm  pre match / 7:15pm  night / 9pm night session 2 / 10:30pm late.

But all’s fair in love, war and TV ratings, last night the Australian Open drew up to 704,000 viewers for Session 2. The night session was 625,000.

Hard Quiz topped entertainment shows at 598,000 eclipsing 7:30 (495,000), Ambulance: Code Red (366,000), Jamie’s Easy Meals for Every Day (268,000 / 217,000) and Britain’s Most Historic Towns (239,000).

Later The Weekly with Charlie Pickering led entertainment (507,000) then Aftertaste (352,000), The Bay (266,000 / 229,000) and QI (233,000).

Regardless of how you cut it up, Nine had a decisive win with a 34% share over Seven’s 24% then ABC 17.3%, 10 15.9% and SBS 8.7%.

Nine News was best for Nine at (841,000 / 829,000).

Seven News was #1 at 994,000 / 939,000. The Chase was 530,000 / 309,000 then Home & Away (510,000).

ABC News won its slot at 633,000. The Drum was 144,000 and The Last Leg drew 139,000.

The Project pulled 429,000 / 251,000 for 10. 10 News First was 359,000 / 239,000. Bull managed 163,000 / 145,000.

On SBS it was Michael Palin: Travels of a Lifetime (226,000), SBS World News (168,000 / 152,000) then Vikings (112,000). Mastermind was just 51,000.

Bluey barked up multichannels to the sound of 231,000.

10 declines to comment on deleted Project video https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/10-declines-to-comment-on-deleted-project-video.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/10-declines-to-comment-on-deleted-project-video.html#comments Tue, 09 Feb 2021 17:55:19 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=409559

Network 10 is declining to comment on a decision to pull a Project interview from its 10Play platform in which Waleed Aly spoke with former Collingwood player Heritier Lumumba.

Lumumba was interviewed by Waleed Aly in 2017 in which he discussed his experiences at Collingwood, alleging club racism including that he was called “chimp” by players.

In the interview Aly asked why other Collingwood players could not verify the name-calling, later prompting Peter Helliar to question why more teammates had not publicly supported Lumumba’s claims.

Lumumba’s complaint led to an independent report which found Collingwood guilty of “systemic racism” which had resulted in “profound and enduring harm” to First Nations and African players. Yesterday Collingwood president Eddie McGuire resigned from the club after 23 years, calling time ahead of schedule after headlines and ferocious social media following a fumbled press conference last week.

But while Helliar has since apologised for his comments and vowing to “do better,” Waleed Aly is yet to address the interview on The Project. Last night the show reported on McGuire falling on his sword, which would have been opportune to address the matter.

Instead the original video has been quietly sunk (it’s already rife through social media).

It’s not a great vote of confidence by management for either The Project or Aly.

Meanwhile The Project trades on having frank conversations with its audience, and it really needs to do that now.

Amazing Race wins slot, soft start for Australian Open. https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/amazing-race-wins-slot-soft-start-for-australian-open.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/amazing-race-wins-slot-soft-start-for-australian-open.html#comments Mon, 08 Feb 2021 22:47:41 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=409447

How has the late start impacted on the Australian Open audiences?

Night 1 of play -now out of school holidays- averaged 486,000 metro viewers for Nine, down on 2020’s first night of 634,000.

The Amazing Race Australia won its slot at 558,000 viewers then 7:30 (533,000), Holey Moley (528,000) and Australian Story (443,000).

Later Four Corners drew 514,000 then Media Watch (489,000), The Pacific in the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill (326,000), 9-1-1 (325,000) and Hughesy We Have a Problem (264,000).

Seven network won Monday with 28.7% then Nine 26.2%, 10 19.9%, ABC 18.2% and SBS 7.1%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.05m / 1.04m viewers with Home & Away as the top entertainment show on 587,000. The Chase drew 536,000 / 420,000 and The Rookie was 189,000. Earlier the Super Bowl attracted 279,000 rising to 319,000 for the Half Time Show.

Nine News was best for Nine at 879,000 / 846,000.

The Project pulled 522,000 / 296,000 for 10. 10 News First was 371,000 / 249,000 with a repeat of The Graham Norton Show at just 129,000.

EXCLUSIVE: 10 kicked off 2021 early with I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here filmed in Australia and drawing its highest commercial share ever. Head of Programming Daniel Monaghan is keen to acknowledge its success as a taste of what’s to come.

“We were obviously very happy with the performance for I’m a Celebrity. It gives us such a great springboard into the year -we are the home of summer entertainment. IAC did such a phenomenal job this year with an incredible cast, again, under difficult circumstances with the pre-record and the location being in Australia rather than in South Africa,” he explains.

“To come out with our highest commercial shares ever for the series, is something that we are so happy to crow about, and such a strong finale. I applaud ITV and our internal executive production team pulling that together and the casting team.”

Will the show remain in Australia or return to Africa?

“That site in northern New South Wales is used by other countries, so it is more of a logistical question, versus what would we want to do? We want to make the best show possible, at the time we want. The Live element does give us an added bonus. We will go where we think we can get the best show, at the best time. As the world grapples with vaccinations and COVID, we will continue to find the best spot for it.

“But I won’t say that we won’t be in Australia next year.”

Having safely filmed locally, The Amazing Race Australia is now screening three nights a week.

“Eureka have done an exceptional job under extraordinary circumstances, as everyone has encountered. We are thrilled with the series with Beau, happy that we were able to get it away and showcase the country. It’s been such a difficult six months of the year for production. Eureka found the perfect window and made the perfect COVID safe series.”

On Monday Hughesy We Have a Problem returns, this year with regulars Becky Lucas and Nazeem Hussain. Episode one even features problem-solving for Tiger King‘s Carole Baskin plus actor Gary Busey.

“You’ll find the show this year being filmed a lot closer to telecast”

“I think we you’ll find the show this year being filmed a lot closer to telecast, so it will be slightly more current for all the problems,” he continues.

“We really wanted to evolve it this year to be current, given the news of the world. You don’t want things to feel out of date, even if they’re filmed six weeks in advance. So these ones will feel very, very fresh.”

New game show The Cube sees the return of Andy Lee, and is based on a rebooted UK format. It will screen on Wednesdays from February 24.

“We’re very excited to have Andy Lee back on the network after as a host after so many years elsewhere.

“$250,000 on offer every single episode”

“The skills and the games of appear to be very simple. But they are put under the pressure of $250,000 on offer every single episode -twice actually, if there’s more than two sets of contestants,” says Monaghan.

“It had a very successful reboot and when ITV brought it to us, Andy was so excited to host it as a superfan of the show. How could we say no?”

New Bondi Rescue and Territory Cops screen on Thursdays along with national favourite, Gogglebox. The Living Room is in repeats on Fridays with new episodes expected after Easter.

MasterChef Australia returns for its 13th season in Q2 with celebrated new judges Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen. Masterclasses are also coming on Thursday nights.

“After the success of MasterChef last year with Back to Win, we were really buoyed by how well people responded to our three wonderful new judges. They are well into production and knocking people out.

“We put our first promo to air the other night, with mostly retro-vision.”

Q2 also signals the return of another favourite and ratings roadblock, Have You Been Paying Attention? Monaghan isn’t sure if the show can return with a full studio but cautiously speaks on behalf of producers, Working Dog (conceding he may cop a serve for doing so….).

“What they achieved with five people on Zoom and Tom in the studio was pretty incredible”

“They want to be back in studio, that’s where they feel most comfortable. If they can, they will. But they won’t do it if it’s putting people at risk. They also thrive off a studio audience, so they will want one, as we do, just for the energy of the comedians in the room. That being said, what they achieved with five people on Zoom and Tom in the studio was pretty incredible when you look at what some of the Americans and the Brits did with their nightly shows.”

How to Stay Married will screen Tuesdays in Q2 with Peter Helliar and Lisa McCune while a new season of Five Bedrooms is set for Wednesdays and picks up from the house sale ending S1.

“They do find a new house – spoiler alert- but the finding of the house is less of a storyline given how much they covered it in Series One. series. It’s more about the progression of the individual relationships moving forward, rather than retreading the same old ground,” he observes.

“I actually think the second series is a step up”

“I actually think the second series is a step up. Having seen the whole thing, it’s such a nice, warm and very funny show. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Australian / British co-production With Intent starring Brett Tucker, Charlie Brookes and Phoebe Roberts is about to finish filming after border delays and is due later this year.

Q3 sees the return of The Masked Singer which heads back to Sydney for production.

“Jackie’s here, Hughesy’s here now because of his radio. Dannii’s family is in Melbourne, but she is obviously LA based and Urzila is in New Zealand.”

Does that meant Urzila is back on the panel and not Lindsay Lohan? Monaghan is more guarded on those specifics…

“We loved having Lindsay….  we loved having Urzila”

“We loved having Lindsay. We couldn’t have her for Series 2 so we loved having Urzila. So it’s a wealth of people!”

Matchbox Pictures and Eureka Productions are behind new reality contest Making It, based on a format from Amy Poehler & Nick Offerman. But whatever you do, don’t call it crafting….

“I don’t like the word, ‘craft.’ It’s a show about making. It’s art, it’s woodwork, it’s making things. There is definitely craft but it’s bigger than that,” Monaghan insists.

Making It is going into production in March in Sydney. We have found our hosts, and our designers / judges are in the process of being locked.

“They are an exceptional bunch of makers”

“I have seen the cast…. it’ll be a really vibrant and big set with a diverse cast of makers, both in who they are and also what they create.

“You may be good with woodwork, crafts, arts, you may be a good felter – I only say that because I think it’s the funniest one. I don’t know that we have a felter!”

This will be a short run series, screening “a couple of nights per week.”

The Bachelor this year promises its “most eligible bachelor” ever -a term that is deliberately ambiguous.

“I think we’ll deliver on that. It’s open to interpretation, which is why it’s such a good phrase! Maybe you can be more desirable, for whatever reason….” he teases.

“We’re really happy with who has signed onto The Bachelor”

“We’re really happy with who has signed onto The Bachelor. Australia will be very happy with our gentleman.”

A name is not expected until filming begins, to keep the single ladies in the dark. But will Australia know this single bloke?

“Not yet. But you will, and I think he’s a fantastic get for the franchise.”

The Bachelorette returns but is yet to be cast, while Bachelor in Paradise is out this year.

Also new in 2021 is a local version of The Doghouse to be produced in-house. Based on the UK series it centres around match-making lost dogs with new owners.

“There were so many dogs adopted and bought during lockdown across the country that it feels like the right time for people to see this. It’s so sweet and gentle, very much a Gogglebox style show where dogs are matched with their new owners.”

Fans are hungry for more Australian Survivor which will screen in Q4. Monaghan is tight-lipped on a location, but an on-shore production seems a certainty.

“I think it’s reasonable to expect that it might be difficult this season to get to Fiji,” he hints.

“We have a location”

“We are in pre-production at the moment and we have a location. You could guess where it would be, but we will announce that in due course. It will be a standard series in terms of the same stripped format. We have the theme picked. It was cast before it got shut down last time… whether or not that entire cast returns (is unconfirmed).”

Previously-announced Body Hack is out for 2021 but Todd Sampson will return with an alternative series.

“It’s not similar to Body Hack, but it’s Todd Sampson.”

Kinne Tonight and Drunk History Australia are out for 2021 but could return at another stage. Axed are Playing for Keeps, Trial by Kyle, Celebrity Name Game, One Born Every Minute Australia, Scope and from July, long running Totally Wild.

There will also be a major new show for Q4 to replace Junior MasterChef.

“Junior MasterChef was a one-off for the pandemic. I don’t think that will say we’ll never do Junior again, but it’s not slated for this year. We will have something else at the back end where Junior was sitting -TBC in terms of announcements.”

The First Inventors presented by Rob Collins will screen in conjunction with NITV, and Ambulance Australia is expected in Q4.

“We’re happy with the way Sarah & Tristan are settling in”

New-look Studio 10 also gets the network tick.

“We’re happy with the way Sarah & Tristan are settling in. There was a fair bit of change so we’re just happy to have them bed in and work together. I think we’re seeing improvements in terms of the numbers so I’m really happy with the chemistry and the show as a whole.”

Finally 10 is also sticking with its extended 10 News First followed by The Project -will the latter ever return to a studio audience?

“It’s gone on so long, that if they put the audience back in, they’d have to adjust having it back! I don’t know. I won’t say it won’t happen but they have done a superb job without an audience that you could argue the case either way!”

Peter Helliar: “I will do better” https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/peter-helliar-i-will-do-better.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/peter-helliar-i-will-do-better.html#comments Tue, 02 Feb 2021 23:58:09 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=408796

The Project‘s Peter Helliar has apologised to former AFL player Heritier Lumumba after his comments from 2017 resurfaced on social media.

Lumumba was interviewed by Waleed Aly in 2017 in which he discussed his experiences at Collingwood, alleging club racism including that he was called “chimp” by players.

In the interview Aly asked why other Collingwood players could not verify the name-calling, later prompting Helliar to question why more teammates had not publicly supported Lumumba’s claims.

“It would be really helpful if we heard more detail, specifically with the nickname,” Helliar said.

“We can’t find anyone who would speak to us who knew of that nickname over a playing career of 10 years.

“Even if you have to name names, take us into your experience. Paint the picture so we understand it more. Because if you don’t do that, then it just sounds like you’re smearing an entire club.”

On Monday a damning independent report found Collingwood guilty of “systemic racism” which had resulted in “profound and enduring harm” to First Nations and African players. The club’s response had been “at best ineffective or at worst exacerbated the impact of the racist incidents”.

Helliar has now apologised for his comments.

“I urge all fans & members to demand better from @CollingwoodFC,” he tweeted.

“This report is heartbreaking. To @iamlumumba I am truly, unequivocally sorry. I should have believed you. I will do better.”

Lumumba has also revealed in a lengthy thread The Project invited him back on the show to discuss the review, but he declined.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has also now apologised for saying in a Monday press conference it was a “day of pride” in acknowledging the damning report.

McGuire has since backflipped on his stance, admitting he “got it wrong”.

“I’m sorry that my error was a distraction from the importance of the findings on racism and the work that lies ahead,” he said.

2020 was a big year in news, and for shows with opinion, from Breakfast TV to The Project to Q&A, an often-polarising one.

Sunrise has won another year in the ratings, albeit in the context of a lift from Today and News Breakfast. Yet in an age of social media and clickbait stories, it has also seen presenters in the headlines for comments made during a 3.5hr live broadcast during a pandemic.

Craig McPherson, Seven’s Director of News & Current Affairs, is rightly pleased with the network news performance, but acknowledges new landscape.

“The beauty of the Sunrise ensemble is they’ve got firm opinions, they’re balanced in their presentation of them. It is very easy for people to pick a side -and when I say people, I’m meaning the people who like to comment on people who are on air- and for whatever reason, get all caught up in their opinion clashing with that of the person on television. That creates its own thing in the great social media domain where suddenly people have got a purpose for the day, attacking somebody that they don’t agree with,” he tells TV Tonight.

“It’s become part of what we experience. It’s never really got too out of hand for us, I don’t believe.

“Sam has her beliefs. David Koch has his beliefs”

“Sam has her beliefs. David Koch has his beliefs in certain areas. They don’t always agree but that makes for a healthy debate. We don’t like enforcing and lecturing our audience to any particular way on things but in a year that was very polarising …it’s understandable (when something said) can suddenly become a bit of an inferno out there.”

Adding a presenter’s name to an online story will add to traffic.

“Those who front those shows have, dare I say, big targets on their head and it gets way out of control at times.. just unbelievably out of control. Journos know if they chuck Sam Armytage, David Koch, they have their instant monitors and a scoreboard.

“‘There’s a photo here from three weeks ago, let’s regurgitate that and wrap this in, add that..’ and they get very clever with it all.”

“Everyone’s back next year, no changes flagged there”

He also confirms the team will return in 2021 after winning nationally and in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth.

“It’s had a tremendous year, very difficult with the hours they all put in and do and, and the product they’re able to consistently achieve. It’s a tribute to all those who work on and there’s a great team that work on it, both in front and -as importantly- behind the camera.

“Everyone’s back next year, no changes flagged there.”

Seven also won the 6pm news battle, which has been the star performer in Seven’s schedule. Seven News won nationally as well as in Adelaide & Perth.

“In a very tumultuous year for everyone was a great effort by all the teams”

“It’s a very pleasing result. We started the year in a very good spot and we finished pretty much how we started, which in a very tumultuous year for everyone was a great effort by all the teams.

“We won Adelaide and Perth. We were about 50,000 behind on the East Coast, which considering three or four years ago, we were 180,000 behind on the East Coast. So we’ve sort of maintained pretty much the 2019 difference.”

Seven plans to address the Brisbane battle with some tweaks to its Gold Coast bulletin content.

“The Gold Coast is the biggest viewing region in Queensland, where we had had a good couple of years. This year, we didn’t go as well as we did last year. So we’ve got some plans to attend to that. Essentially if you can win the Gold Coast, you win the Brisbane market.”

As he looks back on 2020, McPherson is most proud of how his news teams responded to the need for extra news due largely to bushfires and the pandemic. Unlike Nine’s current affairs brands, Seven produced under the broader Seven News brand, in many cases, were bulletins did not exist in the schedule.

“We did quite a few 7:00 programs when Coronavirus was first starting and the whole world, particularly Australia, had no clue where we were going. There were a hell of a lot of press conferences being called at any given hour from the Prime Minister’s department through to health officials. There was an obvious viewer thirst for that,” he continues.

“People worked extraordinary hours doing programming that just wasn’t factored in”

“The teams in all the markets all jumped in and worked extraordinary hours to push through. But we all did it willingly and it was very successful. There was next to no pushback from any individual. People worked extraordinary hours doing programming that just wasn’t factored in. We didn’t have an ACA, we didn’t have a 60 Minutes, we didn’t have an alternate brand to go to. So we created it from what we had, which was commendable to all the teams.”

Craig McPherson

Spotlight news specials, produced by Mark Llewellyn, emerged as flexible in subject as well as timeslots, but McPherson is optimistic about something more regular in early 2021.

“Spotlight will be first quarter, we hope to get a regular run”

Spotlight will be first quarter, we hope to get a regular run for a period of time and that’s something that Angus (Ross, Director of Programming) and I are regularly discussing.

Sunrise, The Latest are back again and we’re going to do more with our cross pollination with the digital. Spotlight‘s going to have some involvement in that as well. In terms of some breakout stuff, we’ll see more in a digital episodic, it doesn’t always have to sort of cut the mustard to make a broadcast number.

“I can’t underestimate the success seven news.com.au has had. The team there do an extraordinary job, to now be the number three commercial news website. It’s a photo finish between the first three -in 12 months it’s extraordinary. Number one for women and men 35 and under. It’s a really tailored, structured strategic site that targets demographics that aren’t totally aligned with the broadcasters. So it’s an interesting dynamic occurring at the moment, which is good for us moving forward.”

The Block Auction helped Nine to clinch the final week of the 2020 ratings year.

Nine saved the best til last with The Winner Announced on a whopping 1.79m viewers, being the highest rated non-sport audience of the year.

But the rest of the week went Seven’s way with SAS Australia wrapping after a strong first season.

While 10 talks about 50 weeks of scheduling it struggled outside of HYBPA? but the context of production shutdown when Amazing Race Australia might have been screening is important.

10 has yanked a repeat of Bondi Rescue on Monday for a 60 Minutes US interview with former US President Barack Obama (who actually has a production deal with Netflix, but anyway…).

This will be packaged into a half-hour Project special. Bondi Rescue will still roll at 8.

In this not-to-be missed interview, former US President Barack Obama sits down with reporter Scott Pelley in what will be his first television interview since Joe Biden, his Vice President and close friend, became the 46th President of the USA.

Speaking candidly, Obama shares his concerns that President Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud may be putting American democracy at risk.

Conducted in Washington, D.C., the interview will also focus on the upcoming release of Obama’s new book, A Promised Land, which is one of the year’s most anticipated books.

Released in Australia this Wednesday, A Promised Land is the first book of an expected two volumes, which will detail Mr. Obama’s first forays into political office, his 2008 election and end with the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011.

7:30pm Monday on 10.

Amongst the other standouts last week was Bluey at up to 437,000 viewers, and ABC News channel pulling a 6.8% share on Saturday thanks to the Queensland election coverage.

Can Reputation Rehab transform “Tennis bad boy” Nick Kyrgios?

It’s a very big brief for The Checkout‘s Kirsten Drysdale and Zoe Norton Lodge in ABC’s newest show. But in an age of public outrage, pile-ons and cancel culture it’s a valid question which is undertaken, almost Charlie’s Angels-like.

Across half an hour they dissect his image, media appearances, public perception, tantrums and press coverage, with wry humour and social observation.

First up, members of the public are quizzed on their perception of the tennis star, which vary from “A bit of a tosspot,” to “One of the best” and “His attitude stinks.”

Press conference footage suggests Kyrgios is unenthusiastic about dealing with the media, but thankfully we get to hear from the man himself in an interview filmed at his home.

Without dismissing his track record, Krygios alludes to racism in the “nice white gentleman’s sport.” Cue Dawn Fraser’s quote that players should “go back to where their parents came from” (it neglects to acknowledge her apology). And there’s a light nod to the amount of ‘swear jar’ money his bad behaviour has raised for good causes.

“Off the court I’m quite chilled and mellow,” Kyrgios insists.

“I really don’t think I’m a bad boy.”

Kyrgios also explains his love / hate relationship with the game.

“I love training, I love putting in but there are times when I hate it,” and “Losing sucks.”

Other feature interviews include sports media advisor Niav Owens, Tennis Australia’s Director of Performance Wally Masur and Sydney Morning Herald journalist Malcolm Knox. All contribute something on Kyrgios’ public persona and sporting success and the tug of war that exists between them.

But there are some segments that make light of the quest such as having a member of the public (who frankly feels like they have been cast accordingly) in faux tennis court tantrums and press conferences.

By far the most interesting interview is with Kyrgios’ own mother, whose answers speak to the real impact of how her son has been affected by press articles and public attitude. More of this please.

The style of the series is zippy and light, in the vein of The Checkout or The Project, but whether the content justifies its devoted airtime could be relative to the weekly subject.

I also feel more establishing of the credentials of our intrepid hosts might have been helpful. I’m a bit unclear on why they have been tasked with the mission rather than an investigative reporter, or indeed whether Australian Story or Four Corners would mine more depth. But this is not that show. It’s a light and lateral poke at our predisposition on those in the crosshairs.

I suspect achieving said outcome will vary according to the weekly subject. That said, there is certainly room to swim against the media tide, which is what Drysdale and Norton-Lodge seek to offer.

Reputation Rehab airs 9:05pm Wednesday on ABC.

10 Upfronts 2021: what can we expect? https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/10-upfronts-2021-what-can-we-expect.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/10-upfronts-2021-what-can-we-expect.html#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2020 17:55:45 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=397673

10 holds its 2021 Upfronts tomorrow afternoon in an online presentation to clients and media.

Amongst their notable achievements this year are a revamped MasterChef Australia, Australian Survivor, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, The Masked Singer, Gogglebox and Have You Been Paying Attention?

Of course, there have been challenges thrown by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly affecting a second season of Australian Survivor and delays to The Amazing Race Australia. But 10 also moved quickly to revive Junior MasterChef which hit screens this week. It also launched 10 Shake late last month.

As the pandemic subsides across much of the country, 2021 is already looking brighter. Big reality shows are back, including a domestic sojourn for The Amazing Race Australia and 10 will finally confirm a NSW setting for I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

On the rumour front is Celebrity MasterChef, a possible revival of Australian Idol plus a kid’s multichannel show Early Show. Pilot Week could also be back on the agenda for 2021.

10 Upfronts also have a tendency to include shows that are still to screen in the current calendar year (last year it included Playing for Keeps in its 2020 Upfronts because 2019 episodes were on air). But they usually come with a sense of irreverence, in keeping with the third channel. Nine’s event was a little lacking on showbiz, but 10 will probably draw upon its favourite stars.

10 All Access will also be rebranded and relaunched as Paramount+.

Judge rules 10 clarification post in “bad faith” https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/judge-rules-10-clarification-post-in-bad-faith.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/judge-rules-10-clarification-post-in-bad-faith.html#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2020 01:45:59 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=397987

A Federal Court judge has ruled a clarification posted on 10Play, following a defamation case, was unlikely to be seen by anyone.

The matter centres around a 2018 Project report on the death of Melbourne man Jack Chapman who had a consensual fetish relationship with US man Dylan Hafertepen.

It led to a defamation case you can read more on here.

The parties reached a settlement on April 24 this year.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports 10 agreed to publish a clarification on the 10play website for at least 14 days..

But 10 published the clarification at the bottom of a lengthy “terms of use” page accessed via a link at the bottom of the website which Federal Court Justice Anna Katzmann described as being “a place where it was highly unlikely to come to anyone’s attention”.

“Publishing the clarification in a place where it was unlikely to be seen by anyone, let alone by anyone who had seen or heard the publication the subject of the suit being compromised by the agreement, was an act of bad faith,” Justice Katzmann said.

10 was ordered to pay Mr Hafertepen’s legal costs and run the clarification “on a page of the 10play website relating to the program, The Project“.

The statement now runs under The Project Articles here.

On 6 November 2018, Network 10 aired a story about Australian man, Tank Hafertepen, formally known as Jack Chapman, who died in the United States after injecting himself with silicone.

His former partner Dylan Hafertepen brought defamation proceedings against Network 10 about the story.

Network 10 did not intend to suggest and does not suggest that Mr Hafertepen had anything to do with that death. If anyone took it to mean that, then Network 10 unreservedly retracts any such suggestion.

“Had I been on the panel today … I don’t think I’d be asked back” https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/had-i-been-on-the-panel-today-i-dont-think-id-be-asked-back.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/had-i-been-on-the-panel-today-i-dont-think-id-be-asked-back.html#comments Mon, 12 Oct 2020 17:58:23 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=397902

Dee Madigan remembers making an impression when she appeared on the very first episode of Gruen way back in 2008.

“I said the word w*nk on TV,” she admits.

“I was so awful. I was terrible. Had I been on the panel today where the standard is much higher, I don’t think I’d be asked back. But I think that was probably enough for them to think ‘There might be something in this.'”

Twelve years later she is an indelible part of the Gruen team, and a success story in an advertising industry where men have dominated for so long.

It was Zapruder’s Other Film producers Andrew Denton, Jon Casimir & Anita Jacoby who invited Madigan to try out for their Gruen Transfer panel discussing advertising on the ABC -an oxymoron to begin with.

“My boss at the time, was auditioning, and they needed someone just to do the Pitch segment for the pilot episode,” she recalls.

“I tried to memorise what was going to say”

“I was either pregnant or had just given birth. I was terrible. I tried to memorise what was going to say, which is actually a terrible way to do TV.

“I looked terrible too. I insisted on my fringe being dead straight while the rest of my hair was curlier. So I look back and think ‘What was I thinking?'”

In its early years Madigan was often the sole female on the show alongside Wil Anderson, Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft. Now the rotating guests are regularly female, including Karen Ferry & Christina Aventi, but Madigan says the show has always had females behind the camera including (formerly) Anita Jacoby and executive producer Polly Connolly.

For 6 years Madigan has been Executive Creative Director of her own ad agency Campaign Edge, with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane & Darwin. Succeeding in an industry of cowboys and suits is not something she takes for granted, having made the switch from teaching.

“The creative departments would have been 3 women and probably 15 blokes. That was not uncommon and no creative directors were female in the industry. In fact, I’ve never had a female creative director.

“I was good at what I did, but as a female, you tend to get, the tampon ads.

“The ad industry is a pretty gross place”

“When you have children, the ad industry is a pretty gross place. It doesn’t like older people or older women. I saw too many women take time off to have children and just freelance from home. The danger is there’s enough work to do that for a while. So you fall into a false sense of security, thinking you will make a good living and be at home. But eventually that work dries up. I was just determined that wasn’t going to be me. I wanted to start a business so that I will be in control of getting work.”

The TV exposure has been helpful to business.

“Clients come to you because they’re seeing you on TV. It is still bizarre that somehow, because you’re on TV, you know more than someone who isn’t. But you know what, sometimes if an opportunity comes, you just take it. The blokes do it all the time anyway.”

She has also been a regular on The Latest, featured on The Project, A Current Affair and SKY News, including an infamous stoush with Bronwyn Bishop.

“The list of people who I refused to go on with in the end, just got longer and longer. Eventually, about a year and a half ago, I just decided there’s actually not enough money on earth to make me spend my Sunday nights doing that.”

Long produced by CJZ, this season’s Gruen will face COVID protocols, including no audience, a socially-distanced desk, no Pitch segment in person and Russel Howcroft appearing via screen from his home in Melbourne. Madigan is confident the panel will rise to the occasion of missing a studio audience and recognises her role within the Todd – Russel debates.

“You do have to be prepared to speak up, because they’re such big personalities”

“You do have to be prepared to speak up, because they’re such big personalities and you can end up sitting there like a wallflower,” she observes.

“Sometimes I will agree with one and sometimes the other. I’ll often have people say, ‘That Russel, he’s a terrible person!’ But he’s actually amazing. He’s done so much for the ad industry. He’s so passionate about it. I just admire him massively and he’s just such a lovely person.

“I think also the difference is that I am a practitioner, I guess. Whereas Todd is a planner and Russel is a suit.

“I’m the person who actually writes the ads so each of us has a different viewpoint and experience that we can bring to the conversation.”

Gruen returns 8:30pm Wednesday on ABC.

An annual reminder that early on Sunday morning daylight saving takes effect in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT .

Queenslanders, Territorians and West Australians take note of how this impacts your shows -and those spoilers!

Sunrise, Today and News Breakfast will screen AEDT with delays for others -but News Breakfast remains Live on ABC News channel. Some have been known to switch Live into local regions when big news breaks, especially in relation to weather or bushfires.

The Morning Show, Today Extra, Studio 10, The Project, Insiders, 7:30, A Current Affair, The Drum will all air AEDT.

Q&A is AEDT but streams Live on iview.

10 News First viewers in Queensland are likely to be delayed now that the bulletin is centralised from Sydney.

Fans of Reality TV will need to be mindful of social media use in order to avoid spoilers, notably for The Bachelorette, The Block, SAS Australia, Junior MasterChef.

Foxtel viewers not on AEDT will also need to remember those +2 channels as everything shifts by one hour.

And as I always say…. check your smoke alarm too!

On a day that the government overhauls the Drama quotas, Halifax: Retribution again draws another crowd of around half a million in an 8:40 slot. It was only pipped by ABC’s Back in Time for Dinner.

In contrast to the recent struggle for Between Two Worlds, Halifax has enjoyed a stable audience across its run (although Home & Away was still the top rating drama for the night).

Reality TV still tops entertainment, if favoured by an earlier and consistent slot. The Block led on that front at 809,000, ahead of Anh’s Brush with Fame (716,000), 7:30 (615,000), Ambulance Australia (287,000), Every Family Has a Secret (287,000) and America’s Got Talent (232,000 / 186,000) last for Seven.

Back in Time for Dinner led its slot at 591,000 then Halifax: Retribution (496,000), Body Hack (255,000) and Insight (166,000).

Sorry Locky …The Bachelor has finished at an all-time low.

The episode drew just 694,000 viewers, rising to 879,000 for the moment he chose Irena over Bella.

That’s well down on last year’s 936,000 / 1.17m featuring Matt Agnew. That’s despite Melburnians still under a curfew.

But it did win its slot, defeating 7:30 (516,000), The World’s Most Scenic Railways (390,000) and The Heights (213,000). RBT was 169,000 in 2 cities.

Gogglebox led later at 654,000 well ahead of Escape from the City (296,000), The Front Bar (290,000) and Secrets of the Tower of London (193,000).

Two Aussie dramas went head to head last night, at least for some of the evening, with Halifax: Retribution on Nine and Hungry Ghosts on SBS -sadly, the latter failed to fire in its second outing. It’s unfortunate given viewers wait so long for Aussie drama.

Earlier The Block led at 7:30 with 762,000 viewers.

Masked Singer outbreak expands https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/08/masked-singer-outbreak-expands-to-16-positive-cases.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/08/masked-singer-outbreak-expands-to-16-positive-cases.html#comments Tue, 25 Aug 2020 06:13:51 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=392563

The number of positive cases on The Masked Singer has expanded from 7 to 16 people.

A 10 spokesperson said, “Network 10 can confirm that 16 members of The Masked Singer production team have received a positive test result for COVID-19.

“All members of The Masked Singer production will undergo a 14-day period of self-quarantine as advised by the Department of Health and Human Services. All production crew will be adhering to this instruction. “

TV Tonight understands 289 tests have been conducted in relation to the show.

Last night speaking to The Project Dave Hughes noted “cast and dancers” were affected, but it is unclear if he was alluding to any celebrities in disguise.

Osher Günsberg told TV Tonight the Warner Bros. production had already gone to extraordinary lengths to keep its team safe, but still the virus emerged.

“No shared meal breaks, no shared spaces, everyone in masks. I can’t even tell you how the details of how tough it was. We had to prove to DHSS that we were able to make this thing safely. I’d say we were a great example of how you could do such a thing. But even so, it does prove just how vicious this virus, how gravely infectious it is,” he said.

Premier Daniel Andrews had also said of Stage 4 production, “They’re not decisions that are necessarily made by me. What I would say, though …in Screen for instance, there are some productions, that if they if they weren’t to continue, then the whole thing would basically fall over and would be lost to Victoria. Again, it’s done on a case by case basis, and it’s always accompanied by a COVID-safe plan.”

A 10 spokesperson continued, “The health and safety of the community, and our staff and production partners remains our number one priority. Network 10 is providing all crew with all the support and assistance possible.

“We would like to thank the Victorian Government and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services for their continued support and assistance during this time.

“We continue to work closely with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.”

The show continues on 10, but is yet to outline contingency for a grand final.

Updated: Now at 17 cases, with less than 5 results remaining outcome.
