Programmer’s Wrap 2021: Nine https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/programmers-wrap-2021-nine.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2021/02/programmers-wrap-2021-nine.html#comments Sun, 31 Jan 2021 17:58:39 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=408214

EXCLUSIVE: 2021 Programmer’s Wraps kick off today with Nine Program Director, Hamish Turner. Read what he has to say about Nine’s slate and when to expect 2021 shows.

Nine has an enviable slate of returning hit shows in 2021 including Married at First Sight, Lego Masters, Australian Ninja Warrior, The Block, and the demo-friendly Love Island to be joined by Celebrity Apprentice, Beauty & the Geek and Parent Jury.

The Australian Open gets underway next Monday, spilling into ratings survey. This has led to specials this week from Travel Guides and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? as well as Married at First Sight: Grand Reunion -but the 2021 MAFS series formally kicks off on February 22nd.

“She is very candid, talks in a very straight, matter-of-fact way”

Nine Program Director, Hamish Turner. “We’ve got a new MAFS expert in Alessandra Rampolla. She’s a certified clinical sexologist who brings a lot to the table. She is very candid, talks in a very straight, matter-of-fact way and really opens up the participants in terms of discussing intimacy, and ensuring that they’ve got that part of their relationship on track.

“Obviously John (Aiken) and Mel (Schilling) are back and then we have our new couples.”

Turner says Nine also looked to find couples who would “go the distance” this year, whilst conceding that viewers love the dinner party fireworks.

“Couples who have the discourse and dialogue to really share their emotions in a mature fashion is probably the best way to describe it,” he explains.

“It’s the two ends of the table that we always talk about”

“So it’s always the balance. It’s the two ends of the table that we always talk about. This year we’ve ensured that the sharing at the table has a strong voice. It’s a very strong season, I think the country will again embrace it.”

MAFS season was filmed during a period where borders were open but COVID restrictions did affect production.

“One thing you will see is smaller weddings”

“It was shot as a closed set. So yes, couples are able to touch each other. But one thing you will see is  smaller weddings, reflecting the local government requirements. So that’ll probably be the most obvious difference this year,” says Turner.

“There was isolation, obviously, depending upon where you were coming from. The Bachelor had similar conditions. I think every production has gone through a similar situation. What would have been somewhat destructive to shows is if they weren’t able to kiss or be intimate. But once they’re in the production, once they are a couple then obviously that 1.5 role is is no longer required.”

Due to the Australian Open delay, some MAFS episodes will also be seen during the Easter break.

Six part current affairs series Under Investigation, presented by Liz Hayes, will also launch after the tennis and produced by the 60 Minutes team.

“It picks up where 60 Minutes did those MH370 investigations and a bushfire investigation. You get experts in the field, dissecting a case, as they investigate, reopen and analyse the facts,” he continues.

“Hopefully they come to some form of conclusion, or at least ruling out some of the things that perhaps have been brought about through town gossip or innuendo and hopefully get some of these cases back on track.”

Also in Q1 is new local drama Amazing Grace starring Kate Jenkinson (Wentworth) in the title role.

“Grace is a midwife who works in a birthing centre, which is not your traditional maternity ward… birthing centres are more casual,” says Turner. “She’s a fierce advocate for pregnant mothers. It’s very family friendly, there’s real twists and turns, and it’s something particularly females will really fall in love with. There are strong female characters, it’s about her private and personal life, and how they collide in many ways …secrets from the past are brought back and enrich her life and probably help her move forward.”

New 10 part observational series Space Invaders from producers WTFN, which helps viewers to declutter their life.

“A team of experts come in and help a couple or individual. It’s not Hoarders, it’s basically people who have an emotional tie to certain objects and over time it’s taken over their life. They go in, basically take everything from inside the house and bring it outside the house and go through the process of looking to either let go of it, keep it or pack it away. It’s a nice show that will site Friday or Saturday, on the back of ACA.”

Items which are discarded are then sold with monies going towards a room renovation.

“The first episode is gut-wrenching”

“The first episode is gut-wrenching, where the mother was an empty nester, holding on to all the kids’ stuff, and part of the process was helping her let go of that. It has some fantastic results and great makeovers.”

He adds, “Country House Hunters will also continue on Friday nights with Catriona Rowntree. It’s been doing some good numbers through summer, and we’ve got more episodes coming that venture outside Victoria.”

Nine has a number of titles from WTFN this year with 10 part series MegaZoo, filmed at Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary, on Thursdays in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth as NRL commences in Sydney & Brisbane.

In Q2 Lego Masters returns for season three with Hamish Blake and Ryan “Brickman” McNaught, all filmed in Melbourne.

“It’s a more diverse cast, we’ve got really strong female participants this year, and some you wouldn’t expect to see in a show like this. This show continues to grow and as we say, the participants are only limited by their imagination. Some of the creates this year are unbelievable, it’s great family viewing.

David Attenborough: Perfect Planet and Travel Guides series will playout, with a mix of international and Australian episodes.

Doctor Doctor will also return in Q2 with star Rodger Corser joined by new cast Zoë Ventoura, Lincoln Younes, Darren McMullen, John Waters and Chantelle Jamieson.

“It’s back for its 5th season, does really well, internationally and strong cross-platform numbers for us.”

More from WTFN are new seasons of Emergency and Paramedics, which will highlight frontline workers and the dedication to their craft.

“Beauty & the Geek… doesn’t take itself too seriously”

Beauty & the Geek debuts on Nine, now in a stripped format, hosted by Sophie Monk.

“The format will be evolved to bring Beauty & the Geek into today. But at its heart there’s a bit of comedy, there’s a bit of love, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, probably with multiple makeovers.”

Endemol Shine will shoot the series in March in Sydney.

Celebrity Apprentice returns, now with UK boss Lord Alan Sugar, and celebs including The Veronicas, Michelle Bridges, Anthony Callea, Ross Noble and Shaynna Blaze.

“Lord Sugar cuts up so well. He’s got these amazing one-liners”

“We’ve seen the first couple of episodes,” says Turner. “It’s actually very, very strong. Lord Sugar cuts up so well. He’s got these amazing one-liners. He’s a London northerner with the experience on the ground… a certified billionaire, but what’s really pleasing about this show is the talent attached. You see straight out of the blocks, their passion for those charities. With the first win, there’s tears, there’s elation and there’s real money on the table as well.”

With filming completed late last year, how did producers keep paparazzi away from public challenges?

“It comes down to the celebrities not not giving the game away. As you can appreciate, usually they’re the ones who are leaking to the media. But it was somewhat watertight. It wouldn’t happen on MAFS!” he laughs.

In Q3 Parent Jury‘s Jo Frost (The Supernanny) dares mums and dads who believe their parenting style is the best to put themselves to the test. Filming will get underway soon.

“I think one of the main features of this you’ll see is the diversity of cast, diversity of parenting styles and some characters that will really be pretty strict straight off the top.

“We haven’t seen anything really in the parenting space for a long time. The show’s produced by Eureka and I think it’ll have everybody talking.”

“This year if Mt. Midoriyama is conquered she gets nasty and bites back”

Australian Ninja Warrior returns to Sydney (location yet to be disclosed) with Ben Fordham & Rebecca Madden. With border restrictions it isn’t clear if ‘Freddie’ Flintoff will return.

“This year if Mt. Midoriyama is conquered she gets nasty and bites back,” he teases. “The obstacles will be tougher, longer, more arduous” with no State v State edition but a special episode at the end.

Across both Q3 and Q4 is of course The Block, with its 17th season to be filmed at several purchased properties in a Hampton cul-de-sac.

“It’s effectively ‘The Block Neighbours.'”

“It’s effectively ‘The Block Neighbours.’ It will add a new dynamic to the show. We’re working through casting at the moment and it doesn’t start filming for another month or two.”

“We’re just working through whether Sophie comes back or not”

Also returning is Love Island, likely to shoot on the Gold Coast.

“It won’t be overseas, that’s for sure,” he insists. “We’re just working through whether Sophie comes back or not. It really depends on Beauty & the Geek and whether she can do both. She’s still an option.”

Announced at 2021 Upfronts, but not yet on the Nine schedule are reno series Beach House Escape, and Celebrity IOU Australia.

Also returning are Australian Crime Stories and Bondi Vet (which previously shifted from 10) and a second season for Taronga: Who’s Who in the Zoo?

Nine has co-commissioned nature series David Attenborough’s Life in Colour

Turner also announces Million Dollar Mysteries from producers The Full Box (Australian Crime Stories) which will investigate cold cases offering a big reward plus an untitled factual series to be filmed in NSW prisons.

“Think of it ‘the real life Wentworth'”

“Think of it ‘the real life Wentworth‘ -there is a female prison in it- going behind the scenes of what actually happens in these prisons.”

In sport there’s more NRL, State of Origin, Golf, Netball, Footy Classified (Mondays and Wednesdays), Sunday Footy Show, NRL Sunday Footy Show, 100% Footy and select Rugby Union matches following a rights deal through Stan.

A Current Affair (including Saturdays) and the Today show and Today Extra continue across the year.

“Allie & Karl did a great job last year. The first year was really getting their chemistry right. I think they found a really good place and we’re looking forward to seeing that grow this year.”

Finally, Nine continues its UK game show Tipping Point in the afternoons.

Tipping Point continues to do a good job in the arvo. It’s the one show I get asked about the most! My parents and their friends love Tipping Point -it’s appointment viewing for a weekday.”

Are primetime episodes any indication Nine is testing numbers for a local version? Turner is tight-lipped.

“Read into that what you like!” he teases.

Tomorrow: Seven’s Angus Ross.

Seven managed to pip Nine for a win last night after their multichannels lifted them from behind Nine in primary channel share.

The season finale of Gogglebox was the top entertainment drawcard at 700,000 viewers and topped the demos. It proved to be a most unusual year for the show as it reflected how we were living with the virus and saw some participants drop out of direct filming.

A rare Thursday edition of The Block won its slot at 679,000 then 7:30 (586,000),The Bachelorette (441,000) and Scottish Vets Down Under (359,000).

Meanwhile Paramedics was 342,000 then Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure (250,000) Britain’s Got Talent (201,000) and Secrets Of The Tower Of London (150,000).

Two morning shows had a rare tie last week.

Both Today Extra and The Morning Show tied on 112,000 viewers.

It’s a rare outcome given David Campbell & Sylvia Jeffreys (Belinda Russell co-hosts Thursdays & Fridays) are yet to win a week over Kylie Gillies & Larry Emdur this year.

What’s noteworthy is that Nine’s average is over 4 days because  Today Extra did not screen in Perth on Friday due to the US Presidential Debate. Seven’s figure is averaged over 5 days for The Morning Show. Seven sources suggest a 5 day average for both would have delivered them a win.

Seven won in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth markets, while Nine claimed Sydney & Brissy.

Today Extra last claimed a week in March 2018.

Meanwhile Sunrise won another week 233,000 to Today‘s 215,000, with Seven yet to lose a week this year.

Daylight Saving reminder https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/daylight-saving-reminder-2.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/daylight-saving-reminder-2.html#comments Fri, 02 Oct 2020 07:10:34 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=396878

An annual reminder that early on Sunday morning daylight saving takes effect in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT .

Queenslanders, Territorians and West Australians take note of how this impacts your shows -and those spoilers!

Sunrise, Today and News Breakfast will screen AEDT with delays for others -but News Breakfast remains Live on ABC News channel. Some have been known to switch Live into local regions when big news breaks, especially in relation to weather or bushfires.

The Morning Show, Today Extra, Studio 10, The Project, Insiders, 7:30, A Current Affair, The Drum will all air AEDT.

Q&A is AEDT but streams Live on iview.

10 News First viewers in Queensland are likely to be delayed now that the bulletin is centralised from Sydney.

Fans of Reality TV will need to be mindful of social media use in order to avoid spoilers, notably for The Bachelorette, The Block, SAS Australia, Junior MasterChef.

Foxtel viewers not on AEDT will also need to remember those +2 channels as everything shifts by one hour.

And as I always say…. check your smoke alarm too!

Sorry Locky …The Bachelor has finished at an all-time low.

The episode drew just 694,000 viewers, rising to 879,000 for the moment he chose Irena over Bella.

That’s well down on last year’s 936,000 / 1.17m featuring Matt Agnew. That’s despite Melburnians still under a curfew.

But it did win its slot, defeating 7:30 (516,000), The World’s Most Scenic Railways (390,000) and The Heights (213,000). RBT was 169,000 in 2 cities.

Thursday Night NRL was 314,000 / 29,000 across the Nine network.

Seven won Thursday at 27.2% then Nine 25.7%, 10 22.7%, ABC 15.0% and SBS 9.4%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.03m / 1.01m for Seven. The Chase drew 543,000 / 338,000 then an extended Home & Away averaging 516,000. The Latest was 212,000 in 3 cities and movie: Pitch Perfect was 89,000 in 2 cities.

Nine News (952,000 / 928,000) was best for Nine then A Current Affair 633,000. Hot Seat drew 461,000 / 276,000. Paramedics was 194,000 and Botched 144,000 -both across the network.

EXCLUSIVE: A number of camera operators at TCN9 are being made redundant as the network moves to its new home in North Sydney.

Nine studios in the new North Sydney headquarters are evidence of increasing automation in the industry and the broadcaster is consulting with camera operators on redundancy. Shows regularly produced at the historic Willoughby site largely comprise Nine News, Today, Today Extra, A Current Affair, 60 Minutes and various Sport programs.

TV Tonight understands the number of affected roles is less than 10, but Nine is not alone in the transition to automation, which has been impacting camera departments for years.

It will mark the end of an era when the network completes its shift to North Sydney next month.

Nine declined to comment.

Tristan MacManus to co-host Studio 10 https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/09/tristan-macmanus-to-co-host-studio-10.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/09/tristan-macmanus-to-co-host-studio-10.html#comments Sat, 05 Sep 2020 03:12:21 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=393815

Dancer Tristan MacManus has been confirmed as co-host of Studio 10, to join Sarah Harris from Monday September 14.

The Dancing with the Stars judge will helm what appears to be a dual host presentation, following cutbacks at the network.

Angela Bishop will cover entertainment news and Narelda Jacobs will be news presenter. Denise Drysdale, Jono Coleman and Craig Bennett will stay on as contributors.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Natarsha Belling will both depart this coming Friday, while 10 is still
in discussions with Joe Hildebrand about network roles.

“I’ve always had aspirations to be a host of some sort,” said MacManus.

“Although people know me as a dancer, I think my mouth usually works better than my feet do,” he said. “This opportunity came out of the blue and I’m really excited to be working with Sarah and learning from her.”

Tamara Simoneau, Executive Producer, said: “When searching for the right co-host to join Sarah at the helm of Studio 10 we wanted to think outside the box and choose someone who would help bring plenty of extra sunshine to morning TV at a time when it’s needed most. He’s charming, funny and fresh with a cheeky Irish side that he’s ready to share with Australia. He might even turn our studio into a dancefloor from time to time and we’re completely ok with that!”

Ross Dagan, Network Director Of News Content, said: “Tristan has performed all over the world for millions of fans and rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest stars, so we know he can handle four hours of live TV every day. You’ll still get the very latest news, information and entertainment, but in a way that reflects our rapidly changing lives. We all want to know what’s going on in the world, but we also need to escape it from time to time. The outstanding Studio 10 team will strive to strike that balance each and every hour.”

But the show also trails The Morning Show and Today Extra in the battle of morning television. The marathon Studio 10 is handicapped by having no strong lead-in, such as Sunrise or Today, following 10’s short-lived Wake-Up experiment.

10 is yet to confirm a third season of Dancing with the Stars.

AFL is back.

A nail-biting Collingwood v Richmond match cracked the magic million last night at 1.00m viewers across Seven and 7mate. In Melbourne alone there were 668,000 viewers.

Seven cites this as the biggest regular primetime match in a decade. It topped the demos and ensured a huge network share. The game began with a bending of the knee for the Black Lives Matter movement, featured fake crowd noise and cardboard cutout fans, ending in a draw -the first between the clubs since 1917.

By comparison NRL drew 372,000 in 2 cities on Nine. It should be noted another 16,000 watched on 9GEM which Nine still codes separately. Why?

MasterChef Australia was the top entertainment drawcard at 875,000 viewers, down on last Thursday’s 970,000.

7:30 (426,000), Great American Railroad Journeys (231,000) and The Heights (180,000) followed.

Seven network won Thursday with 36.6% then Nine 22.6%, 10 20.3%, ABC 12.3% and SBS 8.1%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.1m / 1.05m for Seven. The Chase drew 641,000 / 404,000 while Home and Away was 405,000 in 3 cities.

Nine’s annual Gold Telethon, held in Sydney on Monday, raised over $1.64 million for Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.

Today Extra’s David Campbell and Belinda Russell hosted a 2 hr telethon this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, joined by various Nine personalities.

Earlier this week Nicola Stokes, CEO at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation, said,  “As a nation, we’ve gone through change and uncertainty. But in tough times sick kids don’t give up, and yesterday as a community we’ve shown that we don’t give up on them either.

“Raising over $1.64 million and counting for Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick will give the gift of research breakthroughs, state-of-the-art equipment, plus world-class clinical care – but most of all it gives the gift of hope. That’s worth its weight in gold.”

There is still time to donate to the 2020 Gold Telethon by calling 1800 244 537, texting GOLD to 0427 183 592, or visiting the Gold Telethon website.

Gold Telethon 2020: guide https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/05/gold-telethon-2020-guide.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/05/gold-telethon-2020-guide.html#respond Fri, 29 May 2020 18:44:37 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=382542

Nine’s 2020 Gold Telethon for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation will be a 2 hour broadcast this year.

Today Extra’s David Campbell and Belinda Russell will host Nine’s broadcast, with 11-year-old Ollie as the face of the telethon for the third time. Ollie has been a patient at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick since birth with a rare condition requiring lifelong treatment.

Seven recently conducted a shorter Good Friday Appeal in Melbourne.

A star array of Nine’s personalities will join them throughout the telethon, including Today’s Karl Stefanovic, Allison Langdon and Alex Cullen, Weekend Today’s Richard Wilkins, Wide World of Sports’ Erin Molan, as well as newsreader Peter Overton and 2GB host Deb Knight.

The Voice superstar coaches Delta Goodrem and Guy Sebastian and family favourites The Wiggles will be performing again at this year’s telethon, along with illusionists The Black Ties. Joining this lineup are APRA Award winners The Rubens and Aussie singer-songwriter G Flip.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian will also be extending her support.

Now in its 11th year, the Gold Telethon will be appealing to businesses and viewers all over New South Wales, who have shown such wonderful generosity for other recent appeals, to donate what they can for these deserving youngsters.

Since Nine joined forces with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation the telethon has raised more than $42 million.

Throughout this year’s telecast there will be remarkable stories of inspiration and hope, including:

  • A three-year-old boy who is the face of the Gold Appeal and the youngest child in Australia to be fitted with a halo-gravity device to correct his curvature of the spine.
  • A brave seven-year-old boy with a rare brain disease.
  • The resilient young girl now aged twelve who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour at 15 months but beat her cancer just months ago.
  • And the courageous twin girls battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who aren’t about to let life’s challenges get them down.

It’s inspirational kids like these who show us why both the hospital and its patients need our ongoing support in order to receive the world-class care Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick is renowned for.

Being the International Year of the Nurse, this is also an opportunity to thank our nurses and healthcare heroes on the frontline caring for our kids every day.

Viewers can donate on the day by calling 1800 244 537, texting GOLD to 0427 183 592, or visiting the Gold Telethon website.

Monday, June 8, starting at 3.00pm on Nine (Sydney).

Nine’s Today show has switched studios amid the current coronavirus changes.

The show has moved to the smaller studio used by Today Extra.

“You might notice it’s a new look here. The show will look a little bit different as we adjust to this normal, so David and Belinda have lent us their studio for the time being,” Allison Langdon told viewers.

Nine confirmed this is part of wider efforts to reduce the flow of traffic throughout the Nine newsrooms.

News presenter Tracey Vo has also returned to Perth and self-isolating as part of WA lockdown.

“Tracey is also off the desk for a while … She’s staying at home in Perth to look after her parents during this crisis. We send her and her family our very best,” said Langdon.

Vo told Today she made the hard decision because her 64-year-old father has a rare autoimmune disease called Morvan’s syndrome.

Last night Australia had its first real taste of watching favourite sporting events with empty stadiums as both AFL and NRL were broadcast on Seven and Nine, respectively.

It was an odd experience, relying on the distant shouts of AFL players for atmosphere, and Seven cleverly including social media vision of fans to give some context. NRL matches also benefited from their microphones on referees.

Thursday Night AFL drew 798,000 viewers which was up 8% on 2019 season opener. Thursday Night NRL was 307,000.

Self-isolating Gogglebox was the top entertainment drawcard at 604,000 for 10.

Seven News was #1 for the night at 1.1m / 944,000 defeating Nine News 994,000 / 968,000.

A Current Affair was 549,000 in cities for Nine followed by Hot Seat 500,000 / 449,000. RBT (204,000 in 3 cities) and a Nine News Special (255,000).

Rebecca Maddern has been cleared of a coronavirus test and is returning to Australian Ninja Warrior.

She self-isolated as a precaution following a positive test by Today co-star Richard Wilkins, missing two heats with Shane Crawford alongside Ben Fordham.

“I’m negative and that means I’m back to work and back on the set of Ninja Warrior, that I can’t wait for,” she said.

“I hope he had a really good time but sorry Shane I’m back.

“I’m really thankful for him and I’m sure he would have done a terrific job. By all reports he smashed it out of the park.”

Nine has confirmed Season 4 will continue filming at Melbourne Showgrounds.

“We are going with the safety recommendations and the guidelines,” she continued.

“We have no audience. We have the competitors and we have close family and friends.

“We are keeping distance. We are extremely hygienic. Everyone is doing everything they possibly can.”

She added, “We are waiting for updates. As soon as something changes, we will comply. At this stage we are allowed to film and we are going ahead with all the necessary precautions in place.”

COVID-19: Rebecca Maddern / Survivor reunion / Aust. Got Talent delay https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/03/covid-19-rebecca-maddern-survivor-reunion-aust-got-talent-delay.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/03/covid-19-rebecca-maddern-survivor-reunion-aust-got-talent-delay.html#comments Mon, 16 Mar 2020 17:58:15 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=374689

More television productions are adjusting as a result of precautions around COVID-19.

  • Nine’s Rebecca Maddern is in self-isolation due to co-hosting Today with Richard Wilkins. She was due to film Australian Ninja Warrior yesterday. Shane Crawford has stepped in to co-host with Ben Fordham. Nine is hopeful she will return to production soon, but it isn’t clear if this would be in time for the two Grand Final episodes, originally scheduled for March 28 and 30.
  • Jonathan LaPaglia will miss hosting the Australian Survivor: Reunion to be filmed this Thursday in Sydney. LaPaglia has missed the 14 day cut-off. A 10 spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Endemol Shine Australia is following Government directives as they are issued in preparation for the filming of Australian Survivor: All Stars Finale. The welfare of everyone involved in our shows is our number one priority so the filming will not have a live audience and host Jonathan LaPaglia will stay in the USA rather than travel to Australia. He will still be a part of the Finale via a satellite link from LA. Survivor superfan Osher Günsberg will step in as guest MC at the All Stars Finale.”
  • Australia’s Got Talent has been delayed. The production is facing no audience and no international acts that were due to participate. A Seven spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Production for Australia’s Got Talent has been postponed due to the current restrictions around large gatherings of people and international travel in relation to COVID-19. At this stage no new date can be provided but Seven and Fremantle will continue to work together to develop an alternate schedule when circumstances permit.”
  • Filming of The Voice has been delayed but still has time up its sleeve. The Age reports Guy Sebastian, Kelly Rowland and co-host Renee Bargh are all overseas, which would entail a 14 day isolation. While Blind Auditions and Battle Rounds have been filmed, shooting was due to recommence on March 26. “The filming of The Voice has been temporarily postponed in the wake of the coronavirus and new government protocols,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “The show is still currently on track to begin airing in its originally planned timeframe, which will be announced in the coming months.”
  • Netflix drama Clickbait was suspended in Melbourne yesterday. The miniseries from NBCUniversal International Studios and Tony Ayres Productions includes an Australian and international cast, and may be impacted by the new 14 day self-isolation rule.
  • Big Brother housemates have been told of the Coronavirus pandemic. An Endemol Shine spokesperson told Seven News, “Endemol Shine Australia takes the health and safety of our crew and contestants extremely seriously. We are working in line with current guidelines and production on Big Brother is continuing. Housemates have been brought across the current situation and we are in constant contact with the families to keep all involved up to date.”
  • But in some positive news all of Seven’s participants for SAS: Who Dares Wins were in New Zealand before a mandatory 14 day isolation order by PM Jacinda Ardern. While they will only face the same when they return home, the production is unaffected and set to screen later this year.

Nine Entertainment Editor has been diagnosed with COVID-19, but is not displaying any symptoms.

“Richard Wilkins has tested positive to COVID-19. Richard is not showing any symptoms of the virus and has been self-isolating, on his own at home, since Thursday last week. Since he is still without symptoms the authorities advise that he has not knowingly put others at risk, although anyone he has been in contact with prior to Thursday afternoon has been notified and will be tested if they show any symptoms of the virus,” a Nine statement said.

“Of the others at Nine who have been tested, four people, including David Campbell and Belinda Russell have tested ‘not detected’ and another is still awaiting the results.

“Our primary focus is for the well-being of our people and ensuring we continue to provide the Australian community with timely, measured information regarding the most up to date information we have from authorities. We want to assure everyone that Richard is feeling well and still without symptoms.”

Wilkins, 65, met Rita Wilson backstage at the Sydney Opera House briefly last weekend, and obliged for a quick selfie, but maintains that the interaction was brief. They also met again at Nine’s Willoughby studios last Monday.

Christian Wilkins, competing on Dancing with the Stars, was not aware of his father’s diagnosis  until after the episode wrapped.

Although he does not believe he has been exposed, he has self-isolated and will be tested first thing on Monday morning.

A Network 10 spokesperson said: “A number of precautions had already been put in place for Sunday’s show to minimise any potential exposure or spread of the virus including promoting good hygiene practices backstage and in-studio, and filming without a studio audience.

“All Dancing With The Stars cast and crew have been asked to self-monitor for symptoms relating to COVID-19 while we await the results of Christian’s test. Warner Bros. and Network 10 will provide all cast and crew the appropriate accommodation and support during this time.”

Meanwhile Today‘s weather man Tim Davies is returning from overseas and has said he will self-isolate as directed by new govt. requirements.

“Miss Helena” was one of several hosts on the kids’ show which actually ran on Seven from 1963 – 1988.

Others included Miss Susan (Susan Jamieson), Miss Patricia (Patricia Godfrey-Cash), Miss Colleen, Miss Nancy, and Miss Megan (Megan Sjoquist).

There were also several local editions on NBN Newcastle, SAS-10 Adelaide, and ATV-0 Melbourne.

David Campbell is feeling fine and chilling out with Netflix as he self-isolates as part of precautionary measures, following an interview this week with Rita Wilson.

He has also taken to social media to advise he feels great and is showing no symptoms (Wilson was actually ‘elbow bumping’ during her visit to Willoughby anyway).

Today Extra co-presenter Belinda Russell is yet to tweet an update.

Meanwhile Tom Hanks has also issued a calming note via Twitter as he is isolated on the Gold Coast.

Nine has confirmed those who came into contact with Rita Wilson at Willoughby studios for a “prolonged period” on Today Extra on Monday are self isolating for 14 days.

There are concerns around make-up facilities used, and suggestions David Campbell has self-quarantined.

“Our actions are in line with the guidelines set out by the Government and Health Authorities.  Those who were in prolonged contact with Ms Wilson have been tested and are self-isolating for 14 days.

“Our premises is currently being thoroughly cleaned in all areas she visited and we are encouraging our employees to monitor their health and practise good hygiene.

Tom Hanks has told his followers on Instagram he and wife Rita Wilson have tested positive for coronavirus.

Hanks is reportedly in a hospital on the Gold Coast where he has been filming Baz Lurhmann’s new Elvis movie.

“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” he wrote.

“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?

“We’ll keep the world posted and updated.

“Take care of yourselves!
Hanx!”

A Warner Bros. statement says “We have been made aware that a company member from our Elvis feature film, which is currently in pre-production in the Gold Coast, Australia, has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus).

“We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual. The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world.

“The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently receiving treatment.”

Rita Wilson also visited Nine’s Sydney studios on Monday to appear on Today Extra.

Thursday offered some good news for Seven with My Kitchen Rules managing to win its timeslot.

As the only Reality show in its slot, the show drew 517,000 viewers. While that equalled its best audience so far, it’s not a particularly strong number for the timeslot.

But at least it was ahead of 7:30 (504,000), Ambulance Australia (485,000) and RBT (442,000). However it was Ambulance Australia that led demos in the slot.

Meanwhile the numbers left watching after 8:30pm were pretty dreadful. Law & Order: SVU (286,000 / 243,000), Would I Lie to You? (265,000 from 9pm), Modern Family (255,000 / 185,000 from 9pm) and Nine movie: Transformers: The Last Knight (231,000).

Seven network has its first nightly win of the 2020 ratings year with 29.3% then Nine 26.3%, 10 20.0%, ABC 16.2% and SBS 8.2%.

Seven News was #1 at 929,000 / 920,000. Home and Away was 587,000 then The Chase (507,000 / 295,000).

Nine News was 798,000 / 796,000 for Nine then A Current Affair (630,000). Hot Seat pulled 418,000 / 245,000.

The Project drew 433,000 / 274,000 for 10. 10 News First was 372,000 / 206,000.

ABC News won its slot with 681,000. Elsewhere it was QI (264,000), Doctor Who (212,000) and The Drum (166,000).

On SBS Britain’s Most Historic Towns  was best at 214,000 then SBS World News (123,000) and The Little Drummer Girl (103,000).

NCIS topped multichannels at 153,000.

The Morning Show: 144,000 / 87,000

Sonia Kruger to join AGT panel https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/sonia-kruger-to-join-agt-panel.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/sonia-kruger-to-join-agt-panel.html#comments Sat, 23 Nov 2019 17:51:28 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=366075

Sonia Kruger will join the judging panel of Australia’s Got Talent, Seven has confirmed.

CEO James Warburton confirmed Kruger’s role to the Sunday Telegraph -their first official confirmation she is joining the network. Her name has been rumoured in numerous media stories since news broke of her network switch.

She will also host Mega Mini Golf (working title) to be filmed on the Holey Moley set in the US. Sources previously tipped the show would fall into line with the same title for Australia, once some legalities had been sorted locally.

But Kruger is not expected to host Big Brother, although Warburton has kept Seven’s options open.

“Everyone just assumed that’s what Sonia would be doing and she’d love to do it but we just need to work through that,” he said.

She will also be part of the Tokyo Olympics coverage for Seven.

MKR chef Manu Feildel is not expected to return to AGT.

Nine is yet to confirm its replacement hosts for Today Extra and The Voice following Kruger’s sentimental departure.

The Seven Network today announced that Sonia Kruger is returning to the network in 2020. Sonia’s considerable experience with live television audiences will be on display as a judge on the ultimate talent showdown, Australia’s Got Talent: The Champions, and as host of the international family blockbuster, Mega Mini Golf. Sonia will also be part of Seven’s broadcast team for Tokyo 2020, projected to be the biggest broadcast and digital event in Australian history.

Commenting on the announcement, Seven West Media Managing Director and ChiefExecutive Officer James Warburton, said: “Sonia is without a doubt a superstar and one of the best television talents in Australia. I speak on behalf of the entire Seven team when I say that Sonia was the one that got away. To say we’re thrilled to be welcoming her home as a judge for AGT: The Champions, as host of Mega Mini Golf, and as a member of our team for Tokyo 2020, is an understatement.”

Sonia previously featured on Seven, as co-host of Dancing with the Stars and as Entertainment Reporter for Sunrise and Today Tonight.

She said: “I’m beyond excited to be returning to the network where I first discovered my love of live television and family entertainment. With the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo and a slate of brand new prime time shows Seven is the place to be. I feel privileged to be joining James and the team for what’s going to be an exhilarating ride.”

Australia’s Got Talent: The Champions, Mega Mini Golf, and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, all featuring Sonia Kruger, will air on the Seven Network in 2020.

Entertainment under 600,000, Seven wins Thursday. https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/entertainment-under-600000-seven-wins-thursday.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/entertainment-under-600000-seven-wins-thursday.html#comments Thu, 21 Nov 2019 22:52:14 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=365919

Is it summer yet? It sure felt like it yesterday, in more ways than one…

Thursdays are known for being quiet but no entertainment show could crack 600,000 viewers last night.

Seven Worlds, One Planet was the top non-news title at 595,000, just ahead of an extended Home and Away on 551,000 (from 7pm).

7:30 (526,000), Jamie Oliver: The Naked Chef Bares All (442,000) and Border Patrol (362,000) all followed across the slot.

Earlier Seven’s Cricket coverage of Aus v Pakistan drew up to 474,000 viewers.

Nine led in primary channel share but Seven network won Thursday with 30.3% then Nine 29.4%, 10 17.1%, ABC 15.8% and SBS 7.4%.

Seven News was #1 with 877,000 / 871,000 for Seven.  The Front Bar Cricket Edition was 391,000 and Inside the G ranked 241,000.

Nine News drew 828,000 / 797,000 for Nine then A Current Affair (635,000). Hot Seat was 474,000 / 294,000. Movie London has Fallen was again split into 2 by the network but with a single figure of 280,000.

The Project was 360,000 / 224,000 for 10 then 10 News First (372,000). Trial by Kyle (229,000), Celebrity Name Game (168,000) and  Law & Order: SVU (141,000) followed.

ABC News (609,000), Grand Designs Australia (393,000), Shetland (230,000) and The Drum (164,000) also comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was The Wonderful World Of Chocolate (150,000), SBS World News (120,000) On Becoming A God In Central Florida (115,000).

Hawaii Five-0 led multichannels at 163,000 on 10 BOLD.

A tale of three farewells…. https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/a-tale-of-three-farewells.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/a-tale-of-three-farewells.html#comments Fri, 15 Nov 2019 01:25:56 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=365305

It’s not often someone jumping ship for another network gets an on air farewell, which is doubtless an indication of much Sonia Kruger is loved at Nine.

Today Extra crew gathered for a farewell  in her last show this morning. There was a balloon drop, champagne, a cake and David Campbell in tears.

“We’ve danced, scared each other, laughed, we’ve cried…. we’ve had hot shit Fridays, we’ve goofed off, hopefully we’ve entertained people who have viewed it at home…” Campbell said.

“Everyone here is going to miss you so much. It’s really hard….”

As the tears flows, Sonia replied, “These people have been incredible to work with. I want to say thank you to all of the people behind the camera. They work so hard. The hair and make-up people, the camera operators, the floor managers…. you guys really make this show. We make this show for our audience, and you’re the people we love, who are at the heart of everything that we do.

“If only I could work out which camera I’m on,” she joked.

“It’s been an absolute joy.”

Earlier The Today Show also got sentimental, which differed not just to Georgie Gardner having no farewell but was a contrast to Tony Jones final regular show this morning in which he joked to his dog Archie,“Archie, it’s not a great morning. You should have just stayed in bed with mum, shouldn’t you, mate? The good news is, Archie has a new two-year contract. I got the arse. It’s all going very, very well.”

However Jones promised that he was not completely leaving.

“Obviously I’ll bob up from time to time when there is about eight people calling in sick next year. I look forward to it, and it has been a very, very fun year,” he said.

“Tony, it has been a pleasure. You are one of those people, you always throw to the heart is in the mouth a little bit because where is Tony going to go with this, but that’s one of the great joys of live TV. I reckon you are just about the best live TV performer in Australia. A lot better than me. I can’t get the words out,” Tom Steinfort said.

In preliminary figures The Bachelorette finale drew 848,000, but rose to 992,000 for the moment Angie chose Carlin over Timm, which ranked at #1.

That was up on 2018’s finale with Ali Oetjen of 766,000 / 926,000 but still less than Sophie Monk’s 1.32m/ 1.64m.

It was also well in front of the competition:  Seven Worlds One Planet (564,000) Home and Away (510,000 extended from 7pm), 7:30 (469,000) and Grand Designs Australia (351,000 from 8pm).

Later The Good Doctor was 408,000, then Trial by Kyle (320,000 from 9pm), and a Love Island Australia finale, bumped to a 9:10 start, at 302,000. Interestingly a “Winner Announced” moment backfired -at just 249,000.

By comparison LI was up on 2018’s 198,000 finale but only because that screened on 9GO!

Seven network won Thursday with 29.7% then Nine 25.7%, 10 23.0%, ABC 14.9% and SBS 6.7%.

Seven News was 873,000 / 839,000 for Seven. The Chase was 484,000 / 322,000. God Friended Me drew 226,000.

Nine News was best for Nine at 702,000 / 703,000 then A Current Affair (572,000), and Hot Seat (382,000 / 254,000).

The Project was 426,000 / 241,000 for 10 then 10 News First (323,000). Celebrity Name Game was 193,000.

ABC News (619,000), Shetland (187,000) and The Drum (158,000) also comprised ABC’s night,

On SBS it was Inside Marks And Spencer (153,000), Ainsley’s Australian Market Menu (123,000), SBS World News (103,000) and The Name Of The Rose just 51,000.

7mate’s Die Hard movie led multichannels on 165,000.

Sonia Kruger has now confirmed her departure from Nine, following recent reports she is returning to Seven.

“After eight fabulous years I am leaving the show and the Nine Network. I have had an amazing time here. I have been very privileged to work on some top shelf programs and of course with you, David,” she told David Campbell on Today Extra.

Describing her time as an ‘absolute blast’ Kruger added, “It’s time for me to go and do something new. You know what it’s like, Dave. You’ve got to spread your wings!”

Kruger did not confirm her new TV home, which Seven is also yet to announce. Her departure will signal changes for both Today Extra and The Voice in 2020.

Rumours have abounded about her hosting Big Brother but senior Seven sources tell TV Tonight this is not the case and the show is looking for a refresh.

Kruger added, “Tomorrow is going to be my last day on the show and as a thank you to you at home for having me in your living room every day, we are putting together something special to celebrate.”

More reports fuel Karl return to Today https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/more-reports-fuel-karl-return-to-today.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/11/more-reports-fuel-karl-return-to-today.html#comments Wed, 06 Nov 2019 17:55:52 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=364602

A new report suggests Nine CEO Hugh Marks has thrown his support behind the idea of Karl Stefanovic returning to Today.

The Australian claims Marks is behind change provided Karl takes a big paycut (good luck with that).

Since TV Tonight first floated the duo of Stefanovic and Allison Langdon it continues to gain momentum in media circles. The very next day Langdon featured heavily at Nine Upfronts.

A Langdon swap from Weekend Today could see Georgie Gardner move to Saturdays & Sundays, allowing more time with family. The unexpected factor may be the departure of Today Extra‘s Sonia Kruger from Nine to Seven, tipped to be announced today.

Stefanovic’s contract at over $2m a year is understood to have one more year to run.

Last week Today hit an all-time low during survey.

Sonia Kruger is returning to Seven, according to a media report.

The Daily Mail claims Seven is offering Kruger more money than Nine.

Yesterday reports emerged she had been offered a three year deal at Nine, estimated at $1.5m for Today Extra and The Voice, amongst other duties.

It isn’t clear what role she will have at Seven, but the network has Big Brother joining the schedule, which Kruger hosted in its last incarnation on Nine.

Kruger previously appeared on Seven until 2011, notably on Dancing with the Stars, and has been a reporter for Today Tonight, Sunrise and 11AM. Her partner Craig McPherson is also head of News & Current Affairs.

Her departure from Nine will leave questions around both Today Extra and The Voice while Carols by Candlelight is also due next month.

Seven declined to comment. Nine has also been contacted for comment.

Sonia Kruger has been offered a new 3 year contract at Nine, according to showbiz reporter Peter Ford.

The offer is in contrast to media reports that suggested she might be dropped from Today Extra if Georgie Gardner took the chair -Nine has denied recent reports.

“It would see her continuing to do Today Extra, see her continuing to do The Voice and other projects as they arise (with) a three year guarantee,” he told 6PR.

“I’m told the amount of money is very substantial. You’re probably looking at $1.5m+ for the three years which is good considering the bulk of that is in daytime television.”

According to Peter Ford, Kruger is yet to sign the deal.

Hamish Blake has quashed suggestions that Andy Lee might be headed to the Today show, following a report his sidekick had been sounded out for a role.

“Someone told me yesterday we were both thrown around as hosts. Far out. I’m answering here an article I have no idea about,” he told TV Tonight.

The Lego Masters host said he hadn’t heard any news of Lee joining Today “… only in the context of our friends laughing about a newspaper report. I guess people who run newspapers have to write something. You can’ put out a blank story, so you have to write something.

“Having known Ando for 20 years I’m pretty familiar with our policy on early mornings. I’d be surprised if that changed.”

Meanwhile Nine sources have also denied a weekend report that Sonia Kruger may be replaced on Today Extra.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, a Nine spokesperson said all of the talk was “made up.”

“The sustained attack by The Sunday Telegraph on the female presenters of Nine is aimed to damage the standing of some of Australia’s most talented women in the media,” they said.

“Working mums Georgie Gardner, Erin Molan, Sonia Kruger and Deborah Knight are just some of the Nine women who are performing great roles across the various parts of the business, yet have been targeted by The Sunday Telegraph in a shameful onslaught of stories.”

Elsewhere Seven has also denied reports Gretel Killeen has been signed for the Big Brother revival.

A Seven spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au there has been no conversations around a host.

“It is not just contestant applications with which we have been inundated… everyone is putting their hand up and wants to be involved,” they added.

Hamish & Andy’s “Perfect” Holiday starts soon on Nine.

If it’s Thursday it must be Sport staggered across various channels and cities. Last night there was AFL, NRL and Cricket which ultimately landed in Nine’s favour but which makes analysis somewhat complicated.

10’s The Bachelor (633,000) and Gogglebox (607,000) led in the entertainment stakes, winning their slots and topping the demos.

Nine continues to code its primary and multichannel shows separately resulting in Ashes Series drawing up to 396,000 on Nine, but another 282,000 on 9GEM. It would look much rosier on OzTAM results if Nine bothered to allow a combined number, as Seven does for AFL.

Elsewhere last night SBS had a poor night with one drama so low it was embarrassing.

Seven is yet to claim a night this week, but AFL finals should do the trick.

Nine network won with 33.3% then Seven 31.7%, 10 18.1%, ABC 12.7% and SBS 4.2%.

Seven News was #1 for Seven with 837,000 / 779,000 then Thursday Night AFL (633,000), The Chase (472,000 / 324,000), Home and Away  (442,000 in 4 cities). Movie: The Mountain Between Us was 135,000 in 3 cities.

Nine News (790,000 / 781,000) led for Nine then A Current Affair (711,000), Hot Seat (446,000 / 272,000), Thursday Night NRL (341,000 in 2 cities).

The Project drew 428,000 /265,000 for 10 then 10 News First (329,000), Celebrity Name Game (217,000) and Law & Order: SVU (189,000).

ABC News (567,000), 7:30 (461,000), Escape from the City (342,000), Sammy J, (259,000), Vera (252,000) and The Drum (145,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was SBS World News (131,000), Going Places with Ernie Dingo (129,000), Gourmet Farmer (106,000) and Mastermind (62,000). Riviera was a measly 38,000 -expect a change to the schedule, pronto.

10 led primetime entertainment shows on Thursday

The Bachelor won its slot at 709,000 and while Gogglebox also led thereafter at 669,000. Both shows were #1 and #2 in the demos respectively.

The Ashes Series totalled 402,000 but that includes with 9GEM in some cities.

That bettered competitors including Home and Away (569,000 from 7pm) and 7:30 (513,000).

Thursday proved to be a low rating night for networks, with no reality contests in play.

The Chase continues to upstage primetime shows. At 601,000 / 363,000, it was joined by Home and Away (599,000) as the top entertainment shows of the night.

The latest Mad as Hell episode at 9pm drew 361,000 which was lower than the incorrect replay the night before.

Seven network won Thursday with 31.7% then Nine 24.9%, 10 18.0%, ABC 15.2% and SBS 10.3%.

Brooke Boney adds to Uluru discussion (but it would have been great from the get go). https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/07/brooke-boney-adds-to-uluru-discussion-but-it-would-have-been-great-from-the-get-go.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/07/brooke-boney-adds-to-uluru-discussion-but-it-would-have-been-great-from-the-get-go.html#comments Mon, 15 Jul 2019 07:19:12 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=354672

A discussion this morning on Today has drawn headlines after Pauline Hanson and Steve Price disagreed on a ban closing Uluru to climbers.

Uluru is considered sacred by the Traditional Owners, the Anangu people, and the ban was announced by the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Board in 2017.

But Pauline Hanson likened the move to closing down Bondi Beach.

“The fact is, it’s money-making. It’s giving jobs to the Indigenous community, you’ve got over 4-500,000 tourists a year that want to go there and climb the rock,” she said.

“It’s no different to saying we’re going to close down Bondi Beach because there are some people there that have drowned. How ridiculous is that! This is an iconic site for all Australians.”

Steve Price called for controlled tourism.

“If you have an asset like that, I don’t understand why you can’t manage the climbing of it?Maybe you have to limit the number, maybe you have to got to make it such a special occasion for someone to do it that it is only two or three at a time. I don’t know. I have just come back
from WA where we were diving with those whale sharks where they limit it to ten people at a time. These things can be managed. I think it would be more sensible to do it that way,” he said.

But while host Deb Knight asked if Indigenous views should be respected, on social media the Nine show was criticised for failing to include such a perspective.

Not even Today‘s own Brooke Boney, who fronted the very next segment on James Bond & showbiz, was included in the discussion…..

Boney, who is a proud Gamilaroi woman, co-hosted a subsequent discussion on Today Extra with panelists Shelly Horton and John Mangos. Although the response was some 3 hours later, at least she was able to offer a counter-opinion.

“This is about Indigenous people having some sort of say over what happens on their land and their sacred sites,” she said.

“The thing about the rock is that it’s so sacred to them that every time someone gets injured or hurt or has to be airlifted out it hurts them and they say that their ancestors mourn the loss of those people. So they’re not doing it to be nasty or be protective of themselves, they’re doing it to protect others.”

After a Sunrise segment on Indigenous adoption was widely criticised for its lack of Indigenous perspective, it is concerning breakfast TV has adopted the same approach today.

Both Sunrise in 2018, and Nine this morning included discussions within a wider “hot topics” style chat, where guests are booked ahead of time. But producers should really be alert to the risks of not including an Indigenous perspective, especially given they were aware Hanson was opposed to the Uluru proposal.

It also isn’t the first time complex discussions are squeezed into bite-size debates. It happens every day in the genre.

Studio 10 also attracted headlines in January when Kerri-Anne Kennerley suggested city-based ‘Invasion Day’ protestors were ignoring social problems in rural areas. She was challenged on the spot by Yumi Stynes, before (much) later conceding her original statements were “clunky.”

Both Sunrise and Studio 10 followed up their segments the next day with Indigenous representatives, which suggests things could have been better-handled with perspective from the get go or in longer-form.

Ironically, Brooke Boney’s response was also within a brief panel-style discussion, meaning such things are possible….

A Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight, “The segment was a news-chat canvassing a range of subjects that have been in the news. It was pertinent that Senator Hanson spoke because she is presenting a letter to Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt on this issue. Deb offered the counter view that it is culturally insensitive, and also Brooke Boney followed up later and weighed into the issue on Today Extra.

“We have NT Senator Malarndirri McCarthy on tomorrow to respond to Hanson.”

Logies 2019: Random Acts of Carpetness https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/07/logies-2019-random-acts-of-carpetness.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/07/logies-2019-random-acts-of-carpetness.html#comments Tue, 02 Jul 2019 18:58:12 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=353541

Once again TV Tonight has braved the TV Week Logies red carpet to quiz the stars on their current and upcoming shows, what they would change about the event and what questions media never bother to ask them.

It’s a frenzied night with no time to get in depth, and a merry-go-round of frocks, publicists and media jockeying for position.

Once again, in no particular order is the annual Random Acts of Carpetness.

Warning! Some drama spoilers ahead!

Selling Houses Australia‘s Shaynna, Andrew, Charlie on their next season:
“We’re filming again in South Australia. We always seem to go to the coldest places in winter.”

The Cry‘s Ewen Leslie:
“I’m currently shooting The Gloaming in Hobart for Stan. It’s an 8 part Scandi-noir murder mystery, with Emma Booth, created by Vicki Madden. We’ve been shooting since March and we have a month to go.”

Doctor Doctor‘s Tina Bursill:
“We’ve had a slight change of the guard with a couple of different writers and a new producer, but we still have Ian Collie. So the show has a little bit of a new feel to it. My son has become rogue and Meryl is grief-stricken, still. I don’t think anybody is really playing that but I am. I think when people have a shock in their lives they tend to ricochet from that without really knowing what they’re doing. So Meryl is a little bit reactionary this time round. That’s how I’ve decided to go with it.

“But it’s secret script business. I don’t know what I’m doing in the next 3 episodes.”

Nicole da Silva on Season 4.
“Charlie is desperately trying to get this guy back.”

Co-star Ryan Johnson added:
“She’s been away so I’ve shacked up with April aka Miranda Tapsell. The ex turns up and causes a bit of a stir.”

Neighbours‘ Ryan Moloney on risk and whether he stays in touch with former cast:

“Somebody just asked me, ‘What was the biggest risk I’ve ever taken in my career?’ I had to think about it but I said, ‘Probably staying on Neighbours.’ But it’s really worked out, I’m happy.

“I spoke with Andrew Bibby earlier on. I saw Blair McDonough in the lift on the way down. He’s here. There’s free booze, so you know…”

Eve Morey on Neighbours‘ recognition through nomination:
“There are so many people who work hard on that show, day in, day out, who do spectacular performances, but it doesn’t always get the recognition. So for the show to be celebrated in that way and for those moments to be recognised means too much to everybody.”

Alan Fletcher:
“In my memory it’s the biggest number we’ve had at the Logies and the biggest number of nominations. It’s so fitting that in our 35th year it’s getting recognised again.

“It’s not the same show that it was 35 years ago and a lot of people have started watching recently, so for them it’s a completely new show.”

Colette Mann on coaxing fans to vote through social media:
“I’m trying to own it! I did a lot of work, and some of it apparently was illegal but I’ve just risen above that. We have a lot of loyal fans and I think it’s fantastic that the show is finally being recognised 35 years later. This is the first time we’ve had 6 nominations in about 20 years.”

Rob Mills on his Neighbours role:
“Finn as a good guy. I’m not allowed to say that I’m turning bad. But I might be turning bad.

“To be part of the machine that has turned out so many superstars, it’s an absolute gift for me. Good crew, good company and I’m always learning.”

Richard Cawthorne on upcoming appearances:
“I’ve been working on Glitch and Harrow. I’m just here as a guest tonight. It’s the first time I’ve been to the Logies in Queensland.”

Essie Davis on Foxtel’s upcoming Lamb of Gods:
“I think it has a little bit of everything and nearly all of it is unexpected. It has comedy, passion, malevolence, thrills, fear and the struggle between the feminine and masculine. It’s a beautiful story about faith and woman’s hold on what faith means -instead of the power and politics of a man’s world.

“There’s lot of amazing juxtapositions and awkward situations that the characters confront and get caught in as they face their own pasts.”

Sacha Horler on next projects:
“I just did a small part in Black B*tch, in Winton Central Queensland, near where Deb Mailman is from, near Mt. Isa.”

Danielle Cormack on a guest role in My Life is Murder:
“It was fun and completely silly. Lucy Lawless said to me ‘There’s a role that’s been written for a male but do you think you could play it?’ I said ‘Of course! Don’t change any of the dialogue.’ Micky Malone became Nicki Malone.”

Rob Collins also on upcoming appearances:
“I’m looking forward to Black B*tch and I had a wonderful day on Tim Minchin’s Upright in Kalgoorlie.

Lisa Wilkinson on The Sunday Project:
“I think we’ve really bedded down the team now of Hamish, Tommy and myself and Susie. People are coming back because they like the combination of the four of us on a Sunday night. But we’re up against big rating shows, so we work for the people who are coming along and appreciate that the numbers are going up.”

Waleed Aly on what the media never ask about:
“Obviously on the red carpet it’s a very different sort of thing. I like it when people ask about the work we do. I always get blown away when someone has seen something we did and asks about that.”

Five Bedrooms‘ Doris Younane on enjoying a principal role:
“They’ve finally given me an opportunity to do something!

“It’s nice to just do something for myself. It’s a brilliant role, she’s a great character and it’s relating to women everywhere.

And on working with Stephen Peacocke: “I thought I would be stoned in the street by women around Australia saying ‘He’s mine, he’s mine!’ He’s a great actor and the rapport between us is fantastic.”

Kat Stewart on a potential second season:
“I loved your article about that. We’re hopeful and we know that the writers are plotting in a room.”

Roy Joseph on actress Kumud Merani who plays his mother:
“She’s never acted other than 2 short films. She’s never done anything like this. But all the instincts are there.”

Sam Neill on why he made The Pacific: In the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill:

“Some of my family are Maori and I increasingly feel like a man of the Pacific, myself. I think we’ve much overlooked the Pacific in recent decades. Also, it’s the 250th (anniversary) of Captain Cook and I thought it really needed an objective look at things. It’s always going to be contentious so it was good to examine why.”

Hamish & Andy on whether they have any more Nine shows in their sights:

Andy Lee: “We’re going rock, paper scissors over who gets Today Extra or Today.”

Hamish Blake: “You can have it. Spoiler alert, I’m going paper.”

Andy Lee: “At the moment we’re still enjoying what we’re doing.”

Hamish Blake: “Unfortunately at the moment we’re still enjoying making highly inefficient television. It’s a lot of months to spend making something that’s only on air for a few weeks, but we love it.”

Amanda Keller on what she would like to change about the Logies:
“I do think the way the voting is done now is not for the faint-hearted. I’ve got a radio show. Tom’s a comedian, Sam’s got a bus. If you don’t have an avenue to tell people they’re going for Gold, it’s not that easy. I know the networks get behind everyone but campaigning doesn’t suit everybody.

“Many of us are quite shy in talking about ourselves. That makes it hard in this final week.”

Studio 10 crew on what they would like to change at the Logies:

Sarah Harris:
“Length. I reckon you could wrap this up in 2 hours.”

Kerri-Anne Kennerley:
“In the ‘80s when Daryl Somers hosted it one night it finished at 12:36!”

Home & Away’s Emily Symons on why she has stayed so long with the show:
“I started in 1989, but it hasn’t been consecutive years. I love the core of the show, the Bay and all of its residents, the camaraderie between the characters. I love Marilyn, and playing my character. And I love the fans for keeping us on air.”

Today‘s Deb Knight on what the media never ask about:
“People don’t ask if we have fun. We actually have a lot of fun. There’s a focus on the negatives. There are laughs we have in the ad breaks that we can’t really have on air. But you’ve gotta sustain yourself somehow!”

And Sunrise‘s Sam Armytage on the same question:
“You have to keep it pretty light on the red carpet.

“It’s quite a lot of effort to get here and get dressed, and my mother always says, ‘We never see you.’”

David Koch on Logies night:
“I don’t think I’ve been for 5 years. There are budget cuts and things like that, when you have stingey boss, you just can’t go anywhere!

“We get put on a table near the toilet.

“But we’re just happy to win the ratings for 15 consecutive years.”

Tom Gleeson on whether press ‘got’ his campaign:
“Everyone kind of gets it. News.com.au prints jokes as facts, but it’s weird because it kind of suits me. All these terrible things I said about Amanda were from an attack ad parodying a political campaign.

“It was a bit of concern when my mother said to me older viewers wouldn’t appreciate what I said about Amanda, that she’s not trustworthy. But that was because on Beyond 2000 she said there would be flying cars. So let’s not forget where the quote came from.”

And on whether Grant Denyer won last year because of his help?

“We’ll never know until the figures are released. It’s possible he won it all by himself. But the truth is last year every 5 minutes on social media I had people saying, ‘I’ve never given a flying f*** about the Logies, never voted but I’m voting for this.’”

Wentworth cast on fan frenzy for their show:

Bernard Curry:
“I feel sorry for American viewers who have to wait until we finish airing, but there are all these spoilers. As soon as we finish airing the last episode, it’s up on Netflix (US).”

Kate Jenkinson:
“You can’t turn on Instagram without a spoiler but that’s part of the show. You just have to get in there as soon as you possibly can. There’s such a fanbase online that they start talking about it immediately.”

Frankie J. Holden on being nominated for A Place to Call Home:
“I’ve won a couple of things but I’ve never won a Logie. So if I win tonight, because I’m also working on Home and Away, then it would officially mean I’ve made it right?”

Rebecca Gibney on what changes she would make to the Logies:
“I wouldn’t change them. They are really fun and I love what they’ve done here. It feels like a celebration. For a while in Melbourne people started making fun of it. But really, it’s the only popular awards we’ve got.”

When is a news item a plug for a commercial company and not genuine news?

Media watchdog the Australian Communications and Media Authority will look into an increase of news and current affairs being little more than free airtime.

Last night ABC’s Media Watch highlighted Nine failing to disclose that a report on IKEA in Sweden failed to disclose the furniture giant paid for reporter Christine Ahern and her crew to travel from Australia.

The report featured on Today, Today Extra and Nine News Now.

An ACMA spokesperson told ABC, “As part of its Compliance Priorities for 2019-20 the ACMA is specifically focussing on the issue of commercial influence in broadcast news.”

With AFL on Seven and Cricket on 9GEM, sport fans were divided last night.

Thursday Night AFL pulled 451,000 for Seven /7mate, but that was down on last Thursday’s game of 622,000. No doubt some viewers were drawn to the ICC Cricket World Cup on 9GEM, 348,000 was a bumper number for multichannels. Might it have climbed higher still on the main channel?

But MasterChef Australia was best in entertainment shows at 652,000 for 10 and topped the demos. That saw Sandeep Pandit leave the contest as the show settled on its Top 10 for 2019.

Seven network won Thursday with 33.1% then Nine 29.1%, 10 17.9%, ABC 12.9% and SBS 6.8%.

Happy Birthday to The Morning Show which turned 12 this week.

Long-running hosts Larry Emdur & Kylie Gillies hit the front of the ratings battle on day 1 under executive producer Adam Boland in a 3 month trial. Back in 2007 the show had in-house working title “Kill the Kerri-Anne-Show” and was also up against 9am with David & Kim.

It did just that, and then some, winning from the very first day and is yet to lose a year against all-comers: The Circle, Mornings, Studio 10 and Today Extra. Since 2010 it has been steered by Executive Producer Sarah Stinson.

On Instagram Larry Emdur wrote, “Number 1 for 12 years !! That’s a very very rare and very very cool achievement in TV land. I’m super proud of our awesome team who “bring it” each and every day, thank you guys for giving Kylie all the big words in the scripts.

“Kylie, you are a fascinating and incredible TV wife. Everyday at 9am we get married and every day at 11:31am we get divorced and during those 2.5hours we laugh together, we laugh at each other, we poke fun at other people and we poke fun at each other and sometimes we disagree, sometimes we argue, but it’s fantastic to know that our relationship is strong enough to withstand even the wildest of arguments like….why the Kardashians even exist.

“Who knows Kylie, if Chan7 sorts out some zimmer frame access we could be doing this for another 12 years …. To our audience, you peeps who keep us on air , thank you for being a huge part of this story. We know this is more about you than us so thank you for choosing to come and play with us .”

Amended.

Media Watch highlights Prue MacSween comments https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/05/media-watch-highlights-prue-macsween-comments.html https://tvtonight.com.au/2019/05/media-watch-highlights-prue-macsween-comments.html#comments Mon, 27 May 2019 18:50:04 +0000 http://tvtonight.com.au/?p=350249

Recent comments by Today Extra commentator Prue MacSween around Nick Kyrgios’ Greek heritage drew headlines and last night led to scrutiny on Media Watch.

Two weeks ago MacSween commented on the tennis player’s on court bad behaviour at the Italian Open.

“He should be banned for a couple of years at least. I mean, this guy should join a circus. He’s a clown. He has no ability to handle pressure …” she said.

“He should have been slapped as a child. He’s a spoilt little Greek brat who’s probably being treated like a Prince …

“He is a little creep and I’m sad to say he’s Australian.”

When Ben Fordham countered with, “Well, I don’t think it has got anything to do with him being Greek,” MacSween began to retract. Sort of.

“I love Greeks. I will say I love the Greeks … But I’m just saying the Greeks do spoil their kids a bit?” she replied.

She later added, “And my apologies to the Greeks. I love souvlaki and I like the Greeks.”

After she was accused of casual racism on social media she also responded on Twitter.

“Yasou! I know my words about Nick Kyrgios upset many Greeks and I apologise if I have done so. I love the Greek people and have many Greek friends who love my sense of humour. If you didn’t see the humour in it, I apologise,” she said.

After her comments on Sunrise around Indigenous children caused a furore in March 2018, Seven has never used MacSween again. But Media Watch highlighted several other comments on Today Extra, 2GB and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Paul Barry last night concluded, “…Nine have continued to use her as a regular guest. Proving that in the ratings game, almost anything goes, however toxic, personal and divisive it may be.”
