Perth’s long-running Appealathon will be scaled back by Channel Nine as the administration is handed over to Variety WA.

Appealathon veteran presenter Jenny Seaton has lost her job at Channel 9, told last week she was no longer required by the station and packed up her office on Friday.

She said she had mixed feelings about leaving the charity and the station where she began her broadcasting career.

“I started at Channel 9 in 1968, so most of my working life has been here,” she said. “It’s sad that I won’t be part of the change, but I know it will continue to grow.”

Nine will continue to provide airtime and commercial production support for the charity and events like the City to Surf and the Rottnest Channel Swim will continue.

General manager of Channel Nine Perth and WIN Television WA Ian McRae said, “I am excited to be strengthening our ties with Variety and I believe that the “can do” spirit which exists in WA will ensure that we can take charitable fund-raising activities to a new level.”

Perth telethons are widely recognised for their high per-capita contributions.

  1. I would not be surprised if TVW’s telethon is longer than 24 hours this year.
For 2009 is the station’s 50th birthday. I would actually like them to aim for a 50 hour event, a hour for every year of the station’s existance.

  2. Perth’s Appealathon lost its way many years ago when it stopped being a 24 hour live TV broadcast event.

In Perth, where we are deprived of 95% of live television in any form (even our news bulletins are often pre-recorded), local charity appeals were one of the few times we got to experience live unscripted television.

As far as I know, at least Channel Seven’s Telethon is still continuing its traditional 24 hour live broadcast each year and in October 2009.
