The AFL Footy Show last night paid tribute to a broadcasting pioneer in Lou Richards, with memories shared by Eddie McGuire, Sam Newman, Billy Brownless and Tony Jones.
There were lovely yarns regaled about his antics and knack for putting “showbiz” into the sport. The episode drew its second-best ratings this year in Melbourne & Adelaide and best in Perth, with 461,000 overall (combined with NRL edition later).
It was MasterChef Australia that led the night in entertainment however, with 875,000 / 669,000 across two episodes, down on last week. It topped the demos and pushed TEN’s primary channel to second, with Seven in third.
Seven News topped the night and The Chase continues to hound Hot Seat. Like Nine, the network had a staggered schedule across statelines last night.
Seven Types of Ambiguity lifted on last week for ABC with The Checkout held over for a Budget reply.
Nine network won Thursday with 27.5% then Seven 27.1%, TEN 23.5%, ABC 14.65 and SBS 7.3%.
Nine News (969,000 / 913,000) led for Nine then A Current Affair (736,000), Hot Seat (527,000 / 284,000), The Footy Show (461,000), Thursday Night NRL (400,000 in 2 cities) and RBT (271,000 in 3 cities).
Seven News was #1 for Seven with 1.02m / 957,000 then Home and Away (648,000), The Chase (596,000 / 372,000) and Holiday Horrors Caught on Camera (429,000). The Big Bang Theory was 208,000 and The Front Bar was 80,000 in 3 cities.
MasterChef Australia drew 875,000 / 669,000 across two episodes for TEN then The Project (643,000 / 389,000), TEN Eyewitness News (473,000), Family Feud (371,000) and Law and Order: SVU (312,000).
ABC News (687,000), 7:30 (355,000), Seven Types of Ambiguity (355,000), Budget 2017: Opposition Reply (327,000) and Joanna Lumley’s Japan (255,000) comprised ABC’s night.
On SBS it was Great British Railway Journeys (334,000), Italy Unpacked (196,000), SBS World News (142,000), The Chef’s Line (111,000) and Medici: Masters of Florence: 98,000.

It was good to see the Lou Richards section on The Footy Show last night – in that it was a great chat reviewing his life and hearing some great stories from friends. We rarely get to see this sort of TV anymore- everything is so “production line”… it was great they took time out to do this – and gave it the time deserved.
Dean you are very right and very observant. Might pass it on.
Another huge score for railways on SBS!
I’m surprised MasteeChef managed to beat NRL in Sydney and The Footy Show in Melbourme last night!
AFL footy show didn’t start until after Masterchef finished
No, MasterClass followed at 8:45pm and went head-to-head with The Footy Show until 9:45pm.
Beating it by a few thousand as well.
