2021 Danish thriller Beneath The Surface screens this week at SBS on Demand.
All eight episodes available to stream. In Danish and German with English subtitles.
A paradise on an island in Flensburg Fjord. Created by four inseparable friends – Jakob (Thure Lindhardt), Sabine (Katharina Schüttler), Bernd (Jan Josef Liefers) and Charlie (Lene Maria Christensen). A sheltered home, built on love, trust, devotion, consideration, and true friendship.
The friends’ four children grow up here like siblings, carefree and protected. But then misfortune strikes. On a sailing trip in the Baltic Sea, one of the children disappears, and suddenly nothing is the way it was. Well-guarded secrets come to light, giving rise to distrust, doubt and separation.
Beneath The Surface tells a story that could happen to any of us. It asks us questions: Is the truth more important than friendship? Is happiness worthless if it is built on a lie? Can we forgive a person who truly loves us but has lied to us for years?
