Airdate: Knowing The Score

ABC doco celebrates conductor Simone Young who became the first female Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra -and the fight to get there.

Upcoming ABC documentary Knowing The Score profiles Australian conductor Simone Young, who has broken many glass ceilings within the male dominated world of classical music.

Cate Blanchett, Executive Producer says, “Simone Young is one of the world’s most significant and trailblazing maestros and it is a great privilege to be a small part of this insightful documentary that celebrates her life, her work, and her triumphant return to Sydney.”

This deeply personal doco captures Simone‘s triumphant return to Australia for her appointment as the first female Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2022. Knowing The Score catches the build up to, and includes Simone‘s first performance at the reopening of the Sydney Opera House, emerging after two years from the shadow of COVID-19.

Simone‘s career’s many highs and lows go from young trailblazer to a woman midcareer and at the top of her game – until the shock rejection in 2005 from her own country when her contract is not renewed by Opera Australia in a blaze of humiliating headlines and media speculation.

Knowing The Score celebrates the tough but inspiring journey Simone Young has taken as a woman determined to be her best and reminds us how artists positively impact society.
