Actor Peter Hardy, best known for McLeod's Daughters and Sweat, has died.

Actor Peter Hardy, best known for McLeod’s Daughters and Sweat has died aged 66.

Police identified him following a drowning after snorkelling at Fremantle’s South Beach on Thursday.

The West Australian reports he was pulled from the water, unresponsive, at South Beach in Fremantle at about 10.40am on Thursday. Bystanders performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but were unable to save him.

Hardy began his screen career in the mid 1980s.

He appeared as Phil Rakich in 44 episodes of McLeod’s Daughters between 2006 and 2009. In the Heath Ledger / Martin Henderson series Sweat he played Sid Reilly in 26 episodes in 1996.

He worked continuously as a guest or ensemble actor on shows such as A Country Practice, Prisoner, Jackaroo, Phoenix, Snowy, Time Trax, Janus, The Feds, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, Halifax fp, Good Guys Bad Guys, The Last of the Ryans, State Coroner, Neighbours, Wildside, Stingers, Eugenie Sandler PI, Blue Heelers, The Strip, East West 101, Rush, Underbelly, It’s a Date, Dangerous Remedy, The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

Films included Dingo, Dead End and Chopper and stage productions included Mamma Mia, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, The Boy from Oz and An Officer & a Gentleman.
