Nine confirms Olympics scheduling, commentators for Paris 2024

Round-the-clock coverage across Nine later this month, plus 40 Live channels in HD on 9Now.

Nine has today revealed its full schedule, as well as its hosting and commentatary line-up for the Paris Olympics.

Nine’s coverage begins the week leading into the Opening Ceremony from Monday, July 21, with Today, A Current Affair and Nine News broadcasting from Paris plus the special Let The Games Begin.

Following the special, competition kicks off with the Men’s Rugby Sevens and the Men’s Football, both screening from 11.00pm AEST. The following night the Matildas start their Olympic medal campaign.

Nine’s coverage of the Olympics starts early on Saturday, July 27 with the Opening Ceremony beginning at 3am AEST continuing until the Closing Ceremony on Monday, August 12.

The two week broadcast will come live from Nine’s ‘Trocadero studio’ opposite the Eiffel Tower.

Nine’s commentary team for swimming includes Cate Campbell, Ian Thorpe, Giaan Rooney, Ellie Cole, Mat Thompson and Roz Kelly.

“While I might have missed out on being part of the Australia Olympic team and competing in Paris, I am so excited to still be heading over the Games as part of the Channel 9 broadcast team,” said Cate Campbell.

“This will be the first Olympic Games I have watched since Athens 2004 and I can’t wait to cheer on our swimmers as they hit the pool. I hope Australia falls in love with our swimmers and I look forward to shining a spotlight on the incredible talent we have on the Olympic team.”

Gerard Whateley will be the 9Network’s voice of athletics, joined by Tamsyn Lewis-Manou, Olympic gold medalist pole vaulter Steve Hooker, Dave Culbert, Olympic four-time gold medalist sprinter Michael Johnson and Tony Jones.

“I’m most looking forward to Track and Field in the iconic Stade De France, which will be the venue for Paris’ biggest sporting and entertainment events,” said Gerard Whateley. “After the main stadium in Tokyo was largely empty, the athletes will this time compete in front of 80,000-strong crowds. And while athletics has a galaxy of stars, the face of the sport will be determined by the races at these Olympic Games.”

    How does Stan’s Olympic offering differ to this other than having some events in 4k? Doesn’t seem worth it if 9now has everything too

    1. not since Rio have many of the broadcasters actually sent many of the commentators on site. My understanding is that Nine are sending Gerard Whateley and most of the ahtletics commentary team to Paris, Matt Hill (Rowing and radio commentary various) will also be in Paris with Ray Hadley (athletics and Swimming for radio) . There might be a few others, like Phil Liggett but the rest will be Sydney based. If you have a look at the recent NBC announcement a good majority of there commentators will be in Bristol commentating of a screen. NBC actually in the press release advice who will be in Paris and who won’t. Tokyo Olympics Channel 7 only Sent Bruce and Co and a bunch of reporters to Tokyo. Massive cost saving doing it that way. People don’t realise that since covid Fox Sports have some (not all) but some NRL commentators commentating from a screen and not at the ground (and that is not just the NZ games) . They give it away when they say up there in Townsville or Darwin!

MJ my view is there is no difference in quality of Commentary whether commentators are on Location or in a studio FOX Footy do Adelaide Port Adelaide Sydney GWS Gold Coast and Brisbane Home Games from the studio so infact do 3AW and 2GB does all matches evewn games in Sydney from there pyrmont studios and also every Race meeting from France is done from the studio except for Arc and Same in south africa except for the Durban July and Southern Derby and Oaks Meetings at Turffontein

  8. I assume Live NRL match coverage during the Olympics will remain on the local 9/9HD channels (Imparja Television in remote outback areas of Australia excluding WA) in NSW/ACT/QLD and Darwin, pushing Live or replayed Olympics coverage over to 9GO ! in all these areas ?

I think you’ll find it’ll be the other way around, NRL moved to a multi-channel for Olympics on main channel in Sydney and Brisbane (at least that’s what Seven did with AFL for Rio and Tokyo Olympics). Usually other sport organisations recognise the height of the Olympic Games are agree as a special once-off to changes. Nine would be fools otherwise, look at those sweet sweet Olympics ratings and shares throughout history.

  9. Are they freaking serious? Eddie Maguire – have we not progressed passed this?
    Less than a week post massive job losses you’re telling me they are giving Eddie god knows how much during peak Olympic time – what an embarassment

    1. McGuire would have been hired by the likes of Mike Sneesby (who is under pressure from within his organisation to resign or quit Nine) or other executives that either resigned or were fired as a result of the latest fallout of Nine Entertainment’s “work culture issues.”

      Despite McGuire being not liked by you and other people across Australia, he can be a good commentator and host at times when it comes to covering events like the Olympics.

        1. Eddie McGuire previously did the Olympics on Nine back in 2012 in London and called the Ceremonies (along with Leila McKinnon). I think he called the Athletics on Foxtel. (that time Nine and Foxtel were the shared broadcasters, hence Eddie had to juggle between Foxtel and Nine.) Same for Peter Donegan – he had to juggle both between Fox and Nine during athletics IIRC.
          Mark Nicholas wasn’t a commentator during the Olympics, but instead did London Gold (where it recapped the daily highlights).

I assume coverage of NRL matches for VIC/TAS/SA and WA viewers during the Paris Olympics will be moved to the 9GO ! channel, seeing as 9GEM will be utilised for extra Olympics competition coverage (especially when Australia is competing for Gold, Silver or Bronze medal in 2 different sports at the same time ?
