Rumour: Seven sounds out Eddie for late-night TV?

This one seems like a long shot but it hints at free thinking in the building.

Put this one down as further evidence of Seven News boss Anthony De Ceglie than of Eddie McGuire’s intent to jump ship…

The Australian Financial Review reports De Ceglie recently met with Nine’s-own Eddie McGuire when recently in town for his Melbourne Press Club address.

The article suggests the Seven News boss was sounding out McGuire for a potential ‘late night talk show.’

Whilst I’m not sure that a talk show strictly falls under a News & Current Affairs domain, it doesn’t mean the discussion never happened. After all, McGuire’s own JAM TV already produces content for the network, even if he recently referred to them as ‘Channel Copycat’ and ‘list cloggers.’

McGuire, who anchors today’s Melbourne Cup coverage for Nine, may not be entirely happy with the network he once ran, but it would take a lot to unseat him to the rival network.

At least it shows some new ideas being tossed about by Seven. Here’s one for free… maybe just give the gig to Larry Emdur?

  1. Tony Armstrong would be a great option for this…
Get some strong comedy types to join him and it could work. Cover live news, some guests. Keep it to an hour and give it a regular timeslot.

  2. Eddie hosting a show in 2025 is hardly free thinking.

American late night lives and breathes on the relevance of the hosts in the zeitgeist. They are highly intelligent, fast thinking and progressive for the most part, able to “yes and..” with the best of them while knowing how to make a guest shine and an audience laugh. They’ve maintained relevancy here in the age of tiktok because what they do is so shareable.

As someone who has produced Eddie on the floor he is simply not the right fit to make this sort of television let alone make this television good.

How about australian TV stops chasing 1994’s hottest new stars and formats? There are good boomer talents out there who could do this if they are worried about not pandering to their quickly expiring audience. Would be better perhaps tho to actually risk courting cultural relevancy and engaging an audience on mobile platforms who might *gasp* end up watching live if its good enough. Late night/SNL has managed to stay relevant

  3. Late night Tv show on Free To Air? An Aus network would be crazy to invest in that format these days with the Now generation watching when they want on what device they want. Maybe they should be developing strategies to lure younger eyeballs so they can survive another decade as a sustainable medium.

  4. Please no …… that ship has gone ….. if they were going to do a late night show get someone new …… or someone who hasnt been around as long as Eddie…..

  5. I realize you were probably kidding about Larry (?) David but I would watch Larry in a heart beat over Eddie. Good gracious. I’d guess seven are delighted with the morning show’s dominance and wouldn’t want to mess with it.

  6. Better yet- give Kitty Flanagan her own primetime variety show Sunday through Wednesday. Sam Fang Tonight as back up option. A comic would better placed to engage audiences multiple nights a week.
