Disabled slurs as Tracy Morgan does it again

First it was anti-gay comedy now 30 Rock's Tracy Morgan is under fire again, for remarks about the disabled.

Less than a month after his homophobic stand-up act misfired in the US, 30 Rock‘s Tracy Morgan has come under fire once more, this time for remarks about the disabled.

Morgan warned his audience at a performance in New York City last weekend, “Don’t ever mess with women who have retarded kids.”

The audience groaned, but he didn’t stop: “Them young retarded males is strong. They’re strong like chimps.”

He then reminisced about a girl he once dated, describing her as “a cripple” with a prosthetic arm, a mechanical larynx and a portable dialysis machine.

Peter Berns CEO of The Arc, an organisation that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities said, “Tracy Morgan should apologise immediately.

“This quote is far too offensive to be excused as comedy, and it is very hurtful to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.”

the difference is, everyone is jumping on the Tracy Morgan band wagon to claim outrage.

Who cares what him, or bill maher say. They say it to their audience. Those that are likely to be offended with their comments aren’t really part of their audience.

There should be no requirement that people should try and speak as if whatever they say should be taken and repeated to anyone that could take offense. It’s the whole echoe chamber effect done by the media because it’s easier to tell people they should be outraged and repeat the comments than to report actual news.

Julian Morrow gave a good talk on this a couple years ago at the Andrew Ollie Media Lecture.

  2. I think his comments might have been rude. But pale in comparison when compared to what bill maher says about sarah palin’s down syndrome child.
    Wheres the liberal outrage there?

  3. As a disabled lesbian I find his so called comedy just desperate and sad. It offensive, but I see it more as an indication of his lack of respect and ultimately education. Those who have to resort to insults, homophobia, racism or many other kinds of bigotry in order to be ‘funny’ are generally scrapping the barrel and as others have said are on the way out.

  4. I don’t see how it is any different to Joan Rivers gag about the deaf and blind Helen Keller. I’m not encouraging jokes about the disabled, or any other group in particular, but i’m certainly not offended by them. The acceptance of comedy material is very subjective.

  5. First and last time I ever saw him was the trailer for “Cop Out,” where he completely failed to do anything even slightly amusing. He seems to confuse comedy with shouting abuse.

  6. Ha Ha, I love your work Tracy. Don’t let the soapbox ranters stop you being funny champ. Having a mental disability myself i enjoy having a cackle at jokes about me. If you can’t laugh at it, get a life.

  7. Look I don’t condone it, but having seen many a stand up comedy act from the famous to the unknown controversial topics are always fired off, I’ve been to gigs where you just sit with your mouth open not sure whether to laugh or not, it’s not uncommon practice for comedians, blown out of proportion IMO and I’m not defending Tracey I’m not really a big fan of his and agree he is the weak link in 30 Rock.

  8. Can people get over this? The guy’s career is saying offensive stuff. I think he reached a point where his character on TV became who people thought he was.

Now it’s just people jumping up and down at everything he says, which he’s been saying for years.

It’s just pathetic. You don’t like it, well don’t go see his stand up. The only one’s responsible for offending you are those that are reporting what he says.

  9. This combined with Chris Browns recent outbursts, it would be easy to slur the African American community as being highly prejudiced against many diverse groups ( Just listen to some of the unbroadcastable rap records), however I will not do that.

Suffice to say this bloke does have a few issues with certain groups and may be needs to address them.

  10. Time Tina dumped him from 30 rock. He was always the weakest link in an otherwise great cast anyway.

What kind of message does it send if he keeps going like this without punishment?
