Matt Smith has got Doctor Who fans in a bit of a spin after an answer he gave to VH-1 about spending more time in LA.
“I’ve got another year of Doctor Who, but then I’m certainly going to come and give it a shot – come and hang out in L.A,” he said.
Fans at i09 are already making suggestions about a replacement including Benedict Cumberbatch, who appears in the Steven Moffat-penned Sherlock.

Tony, I’m not sure if I have met any of these fans – the dozens of fans I know mostly seem to think Matt Smith is easily the best of the new series Doctors and one of the best Doctors period.
If Smith is only in it for one more series, I will definitely miss him greatly – he really returned the part to its alien and eccentric roots after Eccleston and Tennant humanised him too much.
I think most Who fans would be happy with the suggestion that Matt wants to move on … and yes please to James Nesbitt!
James Nesbit would be my pick.
I mean alan davies.
I’ve always want Alan Davis to become the doctor. But he will never because looks to like tom baker.
Benedict has said he doesn’t want the job. And I don’t think Moff or Toby or Chris Chibnall or whoever is in control at that point will be that obvious do you? Eccy, Tennant or Smith weren’t the bookies “front-runners” for the job in fact they all came out of left field!! And as much as I’d love Robert Carlyle – and he was one of the two front-runners according to the media last time – he will actually be too old!
And anyway as many are saying – taking a break doesn’t mean leaving the show (although as much as I love Smith i think 3-4 series is a good stint for a doctor and we have always heard that his contract was three years with an option for a fourth).
I think the main fanbase always had a fair idea he would regenerate in the 50th anniversary year. The people in a “spin” are the same ones always in a spin whenever regeneration is mentioned. Matt will leave a new doctor will start, the show will go on – the more things change the more they stay the same.
I’m with rick lomez and Tim. I had to stop watching because of Matt Smith.
Billybob, i care, i cant wait till we get a new doctor, i enjoyed Tennant’s portrayal, but i haven’t enjoyed Matt Smiths very much at all.
Benedict has ruled out being the Doctor, he doesn’t want his face, to quote him “on lunch boxes” Oh and Billybob, aren’t Doctor Who fans entitled to have some news on David’s blog?, if you don’t care, don’t bother posting.
Matt Smith will still be playing the Doctor into 2013.. with the next season (14 Eps) 2012/2013.. 🙂
@Craig: I’m pretty sure i remember reading that as well.
@Billybob – if you don’t care they why bother posting here?
As for who cares, well the millions of fans world wide who have been watching the show for almost 50 years.
BTW Matt talked to Ferguson last week about just finishing the xMas special and having sometime off before doing the next series.
@Billybob. You seem to care enough to spend time & energy making a comment!!
Anyone who does’nt care, did’nt comment. Grow up!
Where do you get ’em, David?
Rusty.
I wonder if The Doctor will ever regenerate as a female, plus a male companion?
Robert Carlyle
Worst Dr Who ever! and that is saying something.
Benedict is only a posibility if Moffat is still in control. I love him as Sherlock.
This “another year of Doctor Who, …then I will hang out in LA” does not necessarily mean he is leaving Who, the next couple of years are going to be a very unusual schedule for Who so he will have pleanty of time to do other projects in between…
I don’t think there’s anything more to it than he has another season of Doctor Who to complete *before he has some free time again*. I doubt he’s made a decision on if he’s staying on beyond that, and we can assume that he is returning until official confirmation from the BBC.
Didn’t Benedict turn down the role, leaving the way for Matt?
I don’t mind Benedict Cumberbatch but not as a Who. I think it’s time he regenerated older and a little grumpier.
How about Robert Llewellyn?
Who cares?
