As summer draws nearer the Australian Film and Television School is opening enrolments for its summer courses in Screenwriting (including with the esteemed Ian David and Vicki Madden), Camera & Sound, Editing and Documentary.

There is also an Open Day in Sydney in early September if you want to check things out.

Skill-up & Move up!

Wondering where your career is going, and whether you too should be making funny cat and dog videos? Know you have some “free time” coming up over summer (i.e. your contract is ending and you haven’t got another one) and feel that it might be good to do something other than lying on a beach, drinking Pina Coladas?

Doing an AFTRS Open Summer School course could give you inspiration for your New Year’s resolutions, and will definitely give you some new skills. They won’t be serving Pina Coladas, but as most courses are finished by 5.30pm (and don’t run on weekends) there’s still plenty of time and sunlight to nip down to Bondi and enjoy summer in Sydney.

And if you book the course by 1 October you’ll receive a whopping 20% discount – saving hundreds of dollars if you get organised early!

Screenwriting

If you’d like to improve your screenwriting Ian David (of Blue Murder fame – and many other great dramas) is running a five day Understanding Narrative Masterclass  the first week of December. Writer and show runner Vicki Madden (whose new series The Kettering Incident premieres late this year on Foxtel) teaches a great Writing for TV Intensive in January to help you get your head around developing series concepts and team writing on long form drama. Plus in early February there’s a Sketch & Short Form Comedy Intensive  to help you tone up your comedy writing and directing muscles.

Documentary

If you have a passion to make docos – whether short form for the web, series for TV or feature doc, then The Six week Doco School  will help you get your idea into shape and you’ll come out of it with funding pitch materials. The first four weeks are delivered completely online (starting in November), so you can study from anywhere, and the final two weeks are at AFTRS in Sydney over January.

TV Editing

Anyone who has spent some time recently in Reality TV land, will know that there are always A LOT of jobs in post-production. If you don’t mind the thought of spending the rest of your life in a darkened room looking at monitors, then maybe you should think about working as an editor? TV Editing Intensive is a 10 day course which will give you AVID certification, plus you’ll get practical experience and meet a bunch of professional editors who will tell you what you need to know to work in the industry.

Camera & Sound

If learning to shoot your own stuff is a priority, the TV Shooter Producer Intensive  is very hands on. You’ll even go down to Bondi to shoot exercises, so you’ll sort of feel like you are on holiday doing the course! And if you really do want to make funny dog and cat videos try the Videomaking 101 course. You’ll learn to shoot, edit and publish short form content in just 5 days. Dogs and cats not included.

AFTRS Open Summer School

Open Day:
10 am – 3pm Saturday September 5
Building 130, The Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park

AFTRS Open Day is a great opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes, both at AFTRS and in TV, film and radio. All of the school’s studios will be ‘live’ including the radio studios, TV studio and control room, the foley sound studio and the sound mix theatre. See what is really like to make film, television, multi platform and radio productions and hear from current students and AFTRS’ teaching staff who all highly experienced industry professionals.

Some current students from the 2015 first intake of the new Bachelor of Arts (Screen) degree will share their experiences, and there will be course taster sessions, screenings, hands-on VFX demonstrations including green screen technology, panel discussions and dedicated information sessions on courses and preparing your application to study at AFTRS.

The AFTRS library (which holds Australia’s biggest collection of screen and broadcast resources) will be open and holding its famous annual book sale. The Student Centre will also be open to answer questions about FEE-HELP and submitting applications for 2016.

In 2016 AFTRS will deliver short courses, technical diplomas and advanced diplomas as well as its comprehensive Bachelor and Masters degrees.

It’s a great day out for both potential future students and the general public alike, with free coffee cart all day. For those unable to attend on the day, key sessions will be streamed live on Twitter’s periscope app and on the AFTRS website.
