Airdate: Black Earth Rising

New Hugo Blick-produced drama Black Earth Rising will air on Netflix from Friday January 25.

A co-production with BBC, it centres around the prosecution of international war criminals.

The cast features Michaela Coel, John Goodman, Tamara Tunie & Noma Dumezweni.

Blick’s previous work includes The Shadow Line and The Honourable Woman. This debuted in the UK in September.

Black Earth Rising is a contemporary thriller that follows the difficult journey of a woman, a Rwandan orphaned by the genocide, raised in London by an adopted mother, trying to discover the truth of her past. The series examines the West’s relationship with Africa, set in a world of prosecution of war crimes.

It’s not as graphic as it might be, considering the subject, but as with all Hugo Blick’s series, it’s grim and utterly enthralling in its bleakness. I was expecting a slightly different outcome for Michaela Coel’s character. Be prepared for quite a few emesis-laced scenes. And there’s a brief cameo from Hugo Blick himself.
