Rumpole of the Bailey reboot in development

Emily Mortimer is to reboot the classic UK series originally created by her father.

Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom, Mary Poppins) is to reboot classic UK series Rumpole of the Bailey.

The legal drama, which ran between 1978 and 1992, was originally created by her father John Mortimer. It starred Aussie Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole, an elderly barrister in London who defended a weird and wonderful mix of clients.

The remake will be produced by her own indieKing Bee and eOne.

Polly Williams, One’s head of scripted development in the UK, told Deadline that Mortimer has “reimagined” the series and her and her sister Rosie were writing the script. “They have written a very modern take on Rumpole. I’m very excited to see how that turns out,” she added.

  1. John Mortimer novelised scripts from each season as collections of short stories. After that he wrote 3 new collections of short stories and then three novels, the last of which was published in 2009. So there is plenty of new material to work with. I’m currently reading Rumpole And The Penge Bungalow Murders (2006).

  2. In a season 3 episode of Will & Grace, Will says he’s watching ‘Rumpole of the Bailey’ before the remote breaks and the channel changes. I didn’t know it was a real show. ?

      1. It’s bee a long while since it was last on 2-perhaps 15 years now. I have a horrible feeling ‘reimagining’ means Rumpole will now be a young black woman or a smart phone app…

  3. This is fantastic. Rumpole was a favourite back in the 80’s. Watched every episode on ABV channel 2. Hope that like so many remakes it does not get ruined. Has to be a great actor to portray Rumpole as well as Leo McKern did.

    1. I hope I’m wrong, but this will not be able to measure up to the original, because of the exceptual character that Leo played. It is like remaking a Bette Davis movie without her.
It might be good but not comparable.

          1. Chuck128. Yes, but if that’s the case my imagination has failed me; I’ll have to try harder to ‘reimagine’ these remakes in the future no matter how inferior they are to the original!!
